Long Term Dog Boarding FAQs

Frequently asked questions about Rover

When you book dog boarding on Rover, your dog stays overnight in a sitter’s home. A traditional kennel or boarding facility typically cares for dogs in a commercial setting, often with multiple staff members and a set daily schedule.

The environment and care arrangements in a sitter’s home vary by sitter. Some sitters may accept only one client’s pets at a time, while others may care for several dogs. Review each sitter’s profile and arrange a Meet & Greet to ask about resident pets, other dogs, supervision, sleeping arrangements, exercise, medication, and the sitter’s home environment.

Consider your dog’s normal routine, comfort around other animals, supervision needs and preferred environment. Whether you choose home boarding or a kennel, confirm what care is included and how your dog’s needs would be handled before booking.

Some boarding sitters stay with the dogs in their care for most of the day, while others may step out for work, errands, or other commitments. Each sitter’s schedule and the amount of time your dog may be left alone will vary, so it is important to align on expectations before the stay begins.

Before booking, tell the sitter how long your dog can comfortably be left alone and confirm their typical schedule during the stay. Adding the maximum number of hours your dog can be alone to their profile can also help sitters determine whether they are the right match.

Boarding does not automatically include round-the-clock supervision. If your dog needs someone present at all times, ask whether the sitter offers constant care or 24/7 care. This may require a separate arrangement and may not be included in the sitter’s standard boarding rate.

Sitters may often include playtime, walks, and activities as part of their boarding services. You can request sitters to follow the specific routines that keep your dog active and happy.

Some sitters may also board multiple dogs or have day care services which can benefit your dog's social needs. Ask about the other dogs during the Meet & Greet to ensure compatibility.

Many sitters note experience with special needs care, including administering medication, offering solo boarding, or caring for senior dogs. A good dog sitter can also provide cute photos and care updates to give you peace of mind. Read the reviews and sitter profile descriptions for a close-up look at their qualifications and experience.

On Rover, pet sitters in the US report an average of 13-14 years of experience for dog and/or cat care. Sitters must also pass a background check before they are listed with us. You can confirm a sitter’s identity verification by looking for the blue or gold badge on their profile. Most sitter profiles include verified reviews from local pet parents, star ratings, and repeat pet parent booking rates.

Additionally, every booking is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes up to $25,000 in eligible vet care reimbursement and 24/7 phone support in English.

For extra peace of mind, schedule a Meet & Greet before booking to get to know your potential sitter.

A Meet & Greet is a casual meeting to vet potential sitters and communicate care needs for peace of mind before a booking begins. Only sitters who have never booked with you before can schedule a Meet & Greet on Rover; however, you are welcome to coordinate one in Rover messages with sitters you have previously booked. This can be helpful if you have a new pet or routine you want to go over with your sitter.

Meet & Greets can take place in person or virtually. If you are booking with a sitter for the first time, we recommend in-person Meet & Greets to get a clearer sense of how your sitter interacts with your pet or the new environment.

During the Meet & Greet, you will have a chance to walk through your pet's routine, medical needs, and unique quirks. Take the time to ask your sitter questions about their skills and expertise, and make sure the fit feels right for everyone. Meet & Greets are a great way to prepare your pet and sitter for longer stays or first-time bookings. Read our tips for your first Meet & Greet.

Rover Guarantee is Rover’s commitment to your peace of mind every time you book. It includes 24/7 customer support, sitter access to advice from qualified veterinary professionals for diagnostic issues, and a reimbursement program for eligible veterinary care in the rare event something goes wrong.

All bookings are backed by the Rover Guarantee, which provides up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care reimbursement.

Each sitter sets their own boarding rates. While a discount is not automatically included with every booking, some sitters offer different pricing for longer stays. You can find this information listed under their rates on their profile under “Stays of 1 night or more”.

Before booking, enter the full stay dates to see the estimated price and message the sitter if you have questions about how their rates apply to a longer stay.
