“My dog is TOUGH, and they did a great job keeping him healthy and as happy as grumpy dog can be. Great communication throughout the stay and when I came home the house was exactly how I left it. I'll book again!”

“Eliese is great!! We’ve used her multiple times to watch our dog and cat and she is very communicative and sends lots of cute pics :) Will def continue to use her in the future for our pet sitting needs!”

“Kayla obviously cares deeply about pets. She checks in with me between bookings about Farah's welfare. Farah was sick this time, and Kayla kept in close touch about her symptoms. She also helped us out with running a sample to the vet and taking care of an issue for a guest in our Airbnb. She also soothed Farah when Farah was missing us. Our nervous Farah really likes Kayla's calm, loving presence.”

“Allie is amazing. Our sometimes skittish girl absolutely loves Allie ~ lots of excitement when Allie comes over. We got a bunch of great pictures, some fun updates, and returned to a spotless house and a very happy pup. I’d give Allie more than 5 stars if I could!”

“Maniyha stayed at our home and cared for our two pups over a holiday week/weekend. She was GREAT! Booking was very easy. Maniyha was very responsive and set up a facetime right away to meet us/or dogs and go over the details. She bonded with our pups right away and sent us updates and so many adorable photos. We felt like our dogs were in great care the entire time. She left our house in great condition (you'd never even know that she was there). When asked, Sebastian and Penelope (our pups) gave her four paws up and they are looking forward to their next hang out with their new friend.”

“Bradley was great watching our dog for an extended vacation! He house sat for us and kept us updated on how our dog, Hoagie was doing! Would definitely have Bradley back!”

“Laura took amazing care of Cee Cee while we were gone for 5 nights. She sent us constant updates and photos and gave her lots of love and attention. We are excited to keep having her watch Cee Cee in the future!”

“Emily was such a wonderful house/dog-sitter for our middle-aged anxious pup! She read all of our (extensive, detailed) instructions, asked us good questions, and then did a wonderful job updating us on how our dog was doing while we were gone. She was highly communicative, friendly, and respectful and we look forward to booking her again!”

“Kymberlee is wonderful and was so attentive with our two big dogs and two cats. We received updates and silly photos of the animals. Even though we had to change plans due to the snowstorm, she stayed flexible and kept us updated about everything. We would highly recommend her!”

“Riley really helped me out when my original dog sitter could not help while we were out of town for the weekend. Riley was professional, communicative and a natural with our dog, Franklin. They went on long walks and to the dog park. She spent so much time with him - giving him so much exercise and attention. Riley left our house cleaner than when we left - washing sheets, putting away dishes, putting Franklin’s toys away.”

About: I’ve taken care of dogs for 10+ years, growing up with multiple types of pets. I house sat for neighbors and family friends with multiple dogs at once, walked all types of dogs, and enjoyed their company as much as they enjoy ours. I’m currently in my masters program full-time, my weekdays are spaced out fairly so I’ll have plenty of time to take care of your fur baby! I can ensure the upmost respect for your home as well as the care your beloved animal needs. I am available to bring pets home with me if that is necessary; I don’t have a yard, however, I live right next to a large recreation park center for lots of outdoor time!
“Davis did a fabulous job watching my cats! I get so nervous leaving them, but Davis went above and beyond to take good care of them and send me many photos. They clearly adore him. Davis is now my go-to pet sitter! Highly recommend!”

“Jayme did a great job! He sent photos and updates, took good care of both our dog and our place, and Gianna seemed happy and relaxed when we got home. He went overboard by making sure Gianna was ok when our flight home was delayed.”

“Andrew was attentive to detail and took great care of our small 8-month old golden doodle while out of town. No issues, and I was able to relax knowing Andrew was on top of anything that came up.”

“Joe is an excellent sitter. I can tell just how much my dog Daisy and him love each other. Joe provides regular updates and photos that make it easier to be away from Daisy. I’m so grateful to be able to leave Daisy with someone so caring and attentive. I would recommend Joe to anyone.”

“Fantastic kitty sitter for our two snuggly kitties. Kim came and watched our home and our cats for 2+ weeks while we traveled abroad. She was extremely responsive and communicative during the trip, letting us know how everyone was doing. Upon our return our house was very clean and tidy, kitties were happy and looked well taken care of. We could not have been more thankful for her taking such great care of everything. I would highly recommend her and her adorable puppy!”

“Emma was fantastic! I literally put in a request the day before needed because my previous booked sitter cancelled at the VERY last minute. Emma was more than gracious with accepting and was the best sit for Blu! I highly recommend her for a dog sit. She provided realtime updates and Blu was very happy with her.”

Pet parents share their Rover experiences - Washington, D.C.
William was amazing with our senior dog with extra needs and house sitting while we were out of the country for the week. He sent daily updates and pictures and was prompt with any questions or concerns I had before booking! Will be rebooking if we are gone again.

Christina was fantastic. She was friendly, easy to communicate with, and took such good care of our pup and our house. She even alerted us to a medical issue that developed while we were away; because she noted it, I was able to get Winston a quick vet appointment and get him all fixed up. Definitely recommend.

Mary did a wonderful job taking care of Mickey while I was away, and I’m very happy with the care she provided. Mickey is a senior dog and an extremely picky eater, so he can require a little extra patience and attention. Mary was very patient with him and even cooked additional food for him when the chicken I had prepared before my trip ran out, which I really appreciated. Communication with Mary was excellent throughout my trip. She was very responsive and would usually reply almost immediately whenever I messaged her, which gave me a lot of peace of mind while I was away. She also kept me updated on how Mickey was doing. Before I returned, she washed the sheets and towels she, and she even stayed with Mickey until I arrived home rather than leaving him alone before I got there. That meant a lot to me, especially after a long day of traveling. Overall, I had a very positive experience with Mary. She was kind, patient, dependable, and clearly cared about making sure Mickey was comfortable and well taken care of. I would definitely feel comfortable having her care for Mickey again and would happily recommend her to anyone looking for a caring and responsible sitter.

Gramoz was a wonderful dog and house sitter. He took excellent care of our girl and sent detailed updates and photos, which we appreciated. He clearly has a deep love for animals. And he went above and beyond to take care of the house while we were away. I would hire Gramoz again any time!

Robert is absolutely wonderful!!! we cannot say enough amazing things about him and how well he took care of her for babies. He was so wonderful at communicating and kept us up-to-date on everything. We never had to wonder or be worried!! He was also the perfect houseguest - taking care of packages and bringing in the mail, and even cleaned the dog bowls before he left!! Truly the best dog sitter and dog friend any fur parent could ask for to keep your mind at ease when you’re traveling!!

Jessica always take such great care of our sweet (but quirky) little guy. You can tell she really gets him and we always come home to a relaxed, happy pup! This time she literally saved us when we missed our connection, adding an unexpected extra night after she had already left. Without hesitation she went back over and spent another night with Logan. I’m not sure what we would have done if she hadn’t been willing to flex and help us out! Super grateful for Jessica!

Jose did a fantastic job watching our 2 dogs, 1 of which is elderly and requires assistance getting up and down the stairs, and the other who is a tripod! From the moment we met Jose, we knew our pups would be in great hands. Jose came over for a meet and greet prior to watching the dogs and was very thorough in asking questions and making sure he understood their routines and specific needs. He was also very sweet and comfortable interacting with the dogs which made us feel at ease. He had no issues with giving either of our dogs different medications, and also had no issues with feeding them their completely different diets. He stayed with them overnight and even let them sleep with him in bed which we know they really appreciated and loved. He gave daily updates and sent photos frequently. There was 1 day that 1 of the dogs had an upset stomach and he was extremely attentive and kept us updated. In addition to being an excellent dog sitter, he also left our house clean and organized. We are so happy with Jose’s work and character, and can’t wait to work with him again in the future! Do not hesitate to book with Jose, even for elderly dogs with special needs!

Hannah was kind, always responded promptly, followed instructions, reached out to me with questions, and sent lots of adorable pictures and videos to me while watching my cats! She spent a solid amount of time playing with them and hanging out to keep them company. She left the apartment as she found it and I felt that she took good care of my kitties. I will hire her again!

Beyond belly rubs and feeding schedules, a house sitter’s presence may provide an additional layer of security for your home. However, you will need to arrange overnight stays and other household tasks with your sitter when reaching out to them. Not all sitters offer the same services. Common household tasks you can negotiate include:
- Mail & deliveries: Collecting letters and packages so they don't pile up.
- Plant care: Keeping your indoor or outdoor garden hydrated.
- Trash & recycling: Taking trash cans to the curb on scheduled pickup days.
- Home security: Sitters can stay overnight to keep your home occupied.
The best way to align on expectations is during your free Meet & Greet. Use this time to provide a "home cheat sheet" that includes your preferred Washington, D.C. walking routes, the location of your favorite pet store, and any specific quirks about your home’s security or appliances.
It’s helpful to think of house sitting as a "home base" service. Most sitters in Washington, D.C. maintain their normal daily routines, like running errands or heading to the office, meaning your pet should be comfortable being alone for a few hours at a time. If your pet needs a little extra company, here is how to find the perfect match:
- Look for "WFH" sitters: Many sitters mention "Work from Home" on their profile to indicate they’ll be present for the majority of the day.
- Update your pet’s profile: Write down how long your pet can comfortably be left alone. This helps sitters quickly determine if their schedule aligns with your needs.
- Communicate 24/7 needs: Standard house sitting usually doesn't include constant supervision. If your pet requires round-the-clock care, be sure to discuss this upfront.
Tip: Use the Meet & Greet to confirm a sitter's typical "away" windows. Transparency ensures your pet stays happy and your sitter can plan their day effectively!
Key handling is entirely up to you and your sitter to agree on during the Meet & Greet or in the Rover app. Most pet parents in Washington, D.C. choose to hand over a spare key or digital fob in person, while others arrange a lockbox or unique access code. Don't forget to discuss key returns as well!

A Meet & Greet is a short introductory meeting between you, your pet, and a sitter. It can take place in person or virtually, although we recommend in-person so that your pet can get to know your sitter or the new environment. During the Meet & Greet, you will have a chance to walk through your pet's routine, medical needs, and unique quirks. Take the time to ask your sitter questions about their skills and expertise, and make sure the fit feels right for everyone. Most pet parents and sitters on Rover welcome Meet & Greets because the process can give confidence and peace of mind for service experiences, especially for longer stays or first-time bookings.
Sitters on Rover set their own cancellation policy, which you can find on their profile under their calendar availability.
Cancelling before a booking begins and before the sitter's cutoff time qualifies you for a full refund. Same-day cancellations for walks, day care, and drop-ins follow the full refund policy. Otherwise, for dog boarding and house sitting, you will receive a 50% refund for the first seven days of the booking and a 100% refund for the remaining days when you cancel the same day a booking should begin.
