“If could give Olivia a 10 star review, I would. Olivia is the best of the best. We got home and she had made a special GF treat for us, she drew little pictures of our puppies and had some flowers on the counter. I can't say enough amazing things about her. Our dogs absolutely loved her immediately and she really went above and beyond for us and them. We have one special needs puppy and the other one was recovering from an injury. She took it all in stride and went with the flow. And, she text us pictures and updates daily, sometimes multiple times a day. She is the absolutely best person I have ever found for pet sitting and I have hired quite a few people. On top of this, she is also kind. Do yourself a favor and hire her.”

“Shelly is a wonderful pet sitter and a great house guest! I love it when she watches my puppy because I know I don’t have anything to worry about. She takes great care of my little dog and sends me updates and pictures while I’m at work.”

“Elizabeth is an absolute gem! Fantastic communicator, loving puppy-sitter and thoughtful house guest as well. We can’t wait to book another visit…our Poms loved her and were quite obviously pampered while we were out of town.”

About: Animals of all kinds have a special place in my heart, whether it's a dog or a cat :) I used to dog-sit for my mom's coworkers when I was in high school, and I've handled solo care for my family's highly active Border Collie/German Shepherd mix for anywhere from a few days to full months at a time. I'm patient, attentive, and genuinely enjoy long walks & active time outdoors, which makes me a solid match for high-energy breeds that need real exercise and structure (also love to just chill and hang out with animals if that's more your pet's speed). Sadly don't have a pet of my own yet, so I would love to give your pet my time and attention while you're away! Hi there! I'm a 25 year-old grad student currently completing a master's program at UO's Portland campus. I'm currently on summer break, so I have ample time to spend with your pet and can be flexible if needed. Come October, I will be unavailable on Wednesday & Thursdays, but I can still provide the same time and flexibility. While I can't currently care for your pet(s) in my own apartment, I am happy to offer walking & sitting services at your home to keep your animal(s) in an environment they are comfortable with. Just let me know what your pet's routine is, and I will do my best to keep it consistent :)

“Alicia provided amazing in home care for my 2 dogs. She is very professional, friendly and seems to genuinely love spending time engaging and caring for dogs. She proactively shared daily updates of their adventures and included some incredible photos.”

“Emily hands down blew away our expectations. She is kind, prompt, and professional. Our dogs and house were cleaner than we left it. Our pets were happy and safe while we were away and we didn’t have to worry at all. I would recommend Emily for all your pet sitting needs!! She’s amazing!”

“melody was very nice and professional. she communicated very well and even changed her arrival time last minute when my schedule suddenly changed. I give her a 5 out of 5 stars and will be booking her again!”

“Kayla was great! She was super proactive about sending me lots of updates and photos and my cats seemed to really love her! I felt very relaxed during my trip knowing they were in good hands. Would definitely recommend Kayla with your fur babies!”

“Max was great, he spent time getting to know my dog. He was calm and friendly with him, taking time to understand him a bit. He kept me updated on his status, he walked, fed, and played with him during house sitting. He also replied quickly to the request, and came out on short notice.”

About: Hello! My name is Kate and I am an long time pet owner with experience with puppies to elderly dogs with special needs and everything in between. I have taken care of small breeds such as chihuahuas all the way up to a Great Dane lab mix. As an active individual, I am able to keep up with the needs of energetic dogs. I love all animals and I have also had experience fostering cats and kittens for one year, which included vet visits and medication administration. I strive to provide professional pet sitting and walking services, and I can assure you that I will treat your pets as if they were my own. I have a flexible schedule and I look forward to meeting you and your pets!
“Zach house sat while I was away and took very good care of my dogs. I got updates and pictures . Very respectful and thoughtful with his services. I highly recommend him for your dog care needs.”

“Celeste was so kind, patient, and communicative! It was such a comfort knowing my little guy was safe while I was away and I didn’t have to worry. Despite being a shy pup, skeeter wanted to be near her and that doesn’t often happen with new people so a great sign. Thank you so much! We will definitely be repeat clients :)”

“Faith and Jeyson stayed with my dogs while I was on vacation for a week. They took excellent care of my dogs and my home. I received daily updates/photos. They did all of the extra things that needed doing (putting out the trash for pick up, checking the mail, etc.) I highly recommend them for pet and house sitting. I hope they are available when I go on my next trip!”

“Rachel was wonderful! She was so sweet and compassionate to my sometimes crazy boy. I received daily check-ins/photos, she was communicative, and took great care of my apartment. I can tell that she truly loves animals and was always very kind to me as well. I highly recommend Rachel, your pets will be in good hands.”

“Crystal was amazing! Took amazing care of our dog and home while we were away. Great communication, updates, and pretty sure our dog was having more fun than when we are home. Absolutely would recommend.”

“I can highly recommend Adriana. Our recently adopted bernedoodle takes time to warm up to strangers and Adriana was patient and flexible making the time to really get to know Otis ahead of a trip we had planned. She spent a long weekend at our home and gave Otis her time and full attention, she spoiled him with lots of snuggles, taught him new games and helped him work on his manners. We had a full daily update and lots of photos which was reassuring and made our time away more enjoyable. We came back to an immaculately clean house. Adriana had laundered her bedding and towels which was not requested or expected but most appreciated. We will definitely be staying in touch with Adriana and asking her to help with all our pet sitting needs.”

“Brianna was awesome! She came through last minute and spent a week at my home with my two dogs. She sent updates daily and my pups were happy when I got home. The house was immaculate. She’s emptied the trash, washed the pee pads and brought the mail in. I would definitely recommend and use Brianna again.”

“Ann was great! She kept us updated and sent lots of photos! Our shy kitty even warmed up to her! We really appreciated her car of the cats and would love to have her sit them any time!”

“Camille and Shayla were extremely kind and attentive during their sit with us. They were kind enough to accept a pretty last minute request for an almost 2 week house sit with my babies. They updated me almost daily with pictures and information about the animals. I felt super comfortable and confident with their sit and it made for a very relaxing vacation. I would definitely recommend them to anyone seeking pet sitting.”

About: What sets me apart is my lifelong, hands-on experience caring for animals combined with a strong scientific and responsible work background. I have cared for dogs, cats, and even a pet pig since childhood, and I currently have a cat. I’ve also regularly pet sat for neighbors and family friends since I was 12, including animals with different temperaments and needs. My biology and environmental science training, along with research experience maintaining live animal systems, has strengthened my attention to animal health, behavior, and safety. I’m also dependable, detail-oriented, and experienced in caregiving roles, including childcare and supervision, which translates well to responsible pet care and reliability for owners. Pet care fits very naturally into my weekly routine. I am currently not working and I have a car, so I have full flexibility for visits, walks, or check-ins throughout the day. During the summer, I have no school commitments, which means I am essentially fully available and can adjust my schedule around pet needs, including mornings, evenings, and last-minute care if needed. I am reliable, organized, and used to balancing responsibility from my academic and research background, so I can consistently prioritize pet care without scheduling conflicts. In a client’s home, I prioritize safety, routine, and minimizing stress for the pet by following the owner’s instructions exactly as given. I make sure pets have fresh food and water, clean litter boxes or outdoor access, and receive attention and exercise based on their normal routine. I’m careful to secure doors, gates, and leashes to prevent escapes and always monitor behavior for any signs of stress or health concerns. With my biology and animal research background, I’m attentive to animal well-being and comfortable handling both cats and dogs responsibly and calmly.

Pet parents share their Rover experiences - Portland
Elizabeth took incredible care of our two dogs, Rosie and Tulip. They have different personalities/needs, and she did a great job of accommodating our various requests. Elizabeth was a super strong communicator - detail oriented, sent tons of pictures, asked great questions, etc. We'll absolutely book with her again!

Erika was great with our 2 dogs/3 cats & our house was in great order upon our return! She followed our specific directions, gave medicine to one of our cats & went above and beyond (watered our outdoor plants as requested). We appreciated her communication, flexibility, & her perseverance (especially during our cat's pooping misfortunes). We would definitely hire Erika again & highly recommend her!

Cassidy watched my dog Lola for 10 days. She provided daily updates & pictures. She didn’t have any issues taking care of my 65lb Velcro lap-dog, who can sometimes be a handful due to her enthusiasm. She also gave Lola her allergy medicine twice a day. The house was clean & in perfect condition when I came home. I definitely recommend her for house sitting large dogs!

I can’t recommend [name] highly enough. She stayed with our golden retriever Riley and our cat Rusty for four nights while we were out of the country, during a week when our building was replacing its hot water system. I’ll be honest — I underestimated how bad the water situation would be. I told her there’d be no hot water, but it turned out the water was off entirely for stretches, and she found that out on her own. She never once made me feel bad about it. She just handled it, with total grace, and kept me updated the whole time with photos and messages so I never had to wonder how the animals were doing from another country. Riley and Rusty were happy and well for and she was generous with her time in a week that asked a lot more of her than she signed up for. If you’re deciding whether to book her, book her. We’ll absolutely be using her again.

Amber was great with both of my dogs. She was reliable and her communication was fantastic. I love her positive attitude and I could tell my dogs were well taken care of during her time with them. Both my dogs have medication schedules that she followed and had no problem giving oral meds to my sheppy. I'll use Amber again!

Frequently asked questions about Rover

Rover makes budgeting the cost of House Sitting easy. As long as your dates and pet profiles are correct, the price you see before you book is the same price you pay for House Sitting. For more information on service fees, click here .
As of August 2026, there are 4,493 sitters on Rover offering House Sitting across Portland. Enter your ZIP code to see which available sitters are closest to your home.
Beyond belly rubs and feeding schedules, a house sitter’s presence may provide an additional layer of security for your home. However, you will need to arrange overnight stays and other household tasks with your sitter when reaching out to them. Not all sitters offer the same services. Common household tasks you can negotiate include:
- Mail & deliveries: Collecting letters and packages so they don't pile up.
- Plant care: Keeping your indoor or outdoor garden hydrated.
- Trash & recycling: Taking trash cans to the curb on scheduled pickup days.
- Home security: Sitters can stay overnight to keep your home occupied.
The best way to align on expectations is during your free Meet & Greet. Use this time to provide a "home cheat sheet" that includes your preferred Portland walking routes, the location of your favorite pet store, and any specific quirks about your home’s security or appliances.
It’s helpful to think of house sitting as a "home base" service. Most sitters in Portland maintain their normal daily routines, like running errands or heading to the office, meaning your pet should be comfortable being alone for a few hours at a time. If your pet needs a little extra company, here is how to find the perfect match:
- Look for "WFH" sitters: Many sitters mention "Work from Home" on their profile to indicate they’ll be present for the majority of the day.
- Update your pet’s profile: Write down how long your pet can comfortably be left alone. This helps sitters quickly determine if their schedule aligns with your needs.
- Communicate 24/7 needs: Standard house sitting usually doesn't include constant supervision. If your pet requires round-the-clock care, be sure to discuss this upfront.
Tip: Use the Meet & Greet to confirm a sitter's typical "away" windows. Transparency ensures your pet stays happy and your sitter can plan their day effectively!
Key handling is entirely up to you and your sitter to agree on during the Meet & Greet or in the Rover app. Most pet parents in Portland choose to hand over a spare key or digital fob in person, while others arrange a lockbox or unique access code. Don't forget to discuss key returns as well!
The Rover Guarantee is Rover’s commitment to your peace of mind every time you book. It includes 24/7 customer support, sitter access to advice from qualified veterinary professionals for diagnostic issues, and a reimbursement program for eligible veterinary care in the rare event something goes wrong.
All bookings are backed by the Rover Guarantee , which provides up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care reimbursement.
Every sitter on Rover is required to pass a background check before listing their services. This process confirms their identity and indicates they are not on the Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Public Website or have any disqualifying offenses.
Beyond ID checks, you can review each sitter's star rating, read verified reviews from other pet parents, and see how many repeat clients they have. Every booking is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care. For more details, visit Rover's Trust & Safety page .
If a health concern arises during a stay, your sitter is instructed to contact you and our Trust & Safety team immediately and, if needed, take your pet to the closest veterinarian. Through our Trust & Safety support team, sitters can ask for diagnostic advice from a qualified veterinary professional if your pet is showing signs of possible illness.
For extra peace of mind, you can also prepare an authorization form for your regular vet. An authorization form outlines your preferred method of care and allows your sitter to bring your pet into their regular clinic.
Every qualified booking made on Rover is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes reimbursement for eligible emergency vet care.
A Meet & Greet is a short introductory meeting between you, your pet, and a sitter. It can take place in person or virtually, although we recommend in-person so that your pet can get to know your sitter or the new environment. During the Meet & Greet, you will have a chance to walk through your pet's routine, medical needs, and unique quirks. Take the time to ask your sitter questions about their skills and expertise, and make sure the fit feels right for everyone. Most pet parents and sitters on Rover welcome Meet & Greets because the process can give confidence and peace of mind for service experiences, especially for longer stays or first-time bookings.
Sitters on Rover set their own cancellation policy, which you can find on their profile under their calendar availability.
Cancelling before a booking begins and before the sitter's cutoff time qualifies you for a full refund. Same-day cancellations for walks, day care, and drop-ins follow the full refund policy. Otherwise, for dog boarding and house sitting, you will receive a 50% refund for the first seven days of the booking and a 100% refund for the remaining days when you cancel the same day a booking should begin.
If your sitter needs to cancel within seven days of the booking's start date, then our reservation protection will kick in. This means our support team works with you to find a replacement sitter.
Yes, you can find sitters who have experience with handling special pet needs in Portland. On Rover:
- 96% of sitters can help with special care needs
- 98% can help with giving oral medications or injections
- 95% can help with daily exercise
You can also find pet sitters on Rover who accept only one pet at a time, which is ideal for anxious puppies, kittens, or senior pets who move at a gentler pace. Some sitters will also list availability for 24/7 care, also known as constant care, in their profiles.
Use the search filters to narrow down sitters whose specific experience or environment meets your pet's needs. When reaching out to your sitter, outline your pet's care routine and use the Meet & Greet to walk your sitter through your expectations.
