“A great sitter! She house sat for us for a week and administered oral meds to my cat, and kept our 70 lb high energy dog company. She gave us daily updates and asked questions when needed. Will book her again!”

“Caroline is absolutely wonderful! She was prompt, showing up right on time. She was very patient with our dog, who is shy and slow to warmup to new people, and did all she could to make her feel comfortable. She kept us informed the entire time and sent photos and cute videos. We highly recommend her!”

“Parind was a fantastic sitter for our dog! He was consistently communicative and sent us many updates (and photos) while we were away. We felt reassured and that she was safe the entire time. She’s an older dog who needed extra medication and care; Parind took it all in stride and managed the additional needs. Our dog was loved and cared for, and he was respectful of our home. We look forward to booking Parind again!”
“Michelle was able to help take care of our dog due to an unexpected scheduling issue. She was highly responsive. It is clear that my dog trusts her a lot. She is gentle with him and took great care of the apartment. Thank you!!!”

“Kelly is a wonderful dog and home sitter, whom I would enthusiastically hire again. We were gone for a week and my dog's life was virtually seamless. Kelly took him on walks and cared for him as her own and our dog is unphased. Kelly was kind, mature, knowledgeable and respectful, in all her interactions with all, our dog, our home, and ourselves. I could not have asked for more. While I was gone, she sent me many pictures, reinforcing that all was well at home and providing peace of mind. Again, I would not hesitate to hire her again. I can not give a better endorsement. Thank you, again, sweet Kelly!”

About: I have over 20 years of experience caring for dogs and cats. I have been pet sitting for friends, family, and neighbors since high school. I currently have a sweet kitty named Luna, who is very loved and very much a part of my family. I also had a pug named Khloe, who sadly passed away earlier this year. She was truly my baby, and I loved her like she was my own child. I miss her everyday, and losing her left a big space in my heart. Caring for animals has always brought me so much joy and happiness, and I feel lucky whenever I get the opportunity to love and care for someone else's furry family member! I currently have a lot of free time and flexibility, so I'm able to give your pets plenty of attention, playtime, walks, and cuddles. I'll treat your pets like they're my own and make sure they get all the love and care they deserve. I would love the opportunity to get to know your pets and become someone you can trust to care for them whenever you need a helping hand! I currently have a very flexible schedule, which allows me to dedicate plenty of time to caring for your pets. I'm available throughout the week and on weekends as well. I'm happy to accommodate different schedules and routines. I'm available for daytime walks, drop-in visits, and overnight stays. Having a flexible schedule means to can give your pets plenty of attention, exercise, playtime, and companionship rather than leaving them alone for long periods of time. Your pet's safety and comfort are always my top priorities. I'm happy to care for your pets in their own home, where they can stay in a familiar and comfortable environment while you're away. I vow to always be respectful of your home and will follow your instructions and your pet's normal routine as closely as possible. I will also always keep you in the loop while I'm caring for your pet and will send you regular updates and pictures, so you can have peace of mind knowing they're happy, safe and well cared for.
“Angelica was so great with our 1 year old lab, bowie. She came two nights in a row to look after him and she was so attentive. She played with him and took him out on walks -- we were able to not worry while we were gone. Thank you Angelica!”

“Alanna was wonderful with my 11-week old puppy. She sent me pictures throughout the day and kept me informed on how he was doing. Also, she worked on reinforcing his trainer which was greatly appreciated. We will definitely book again with Alanna!”

“Mathew was an excellent dog/housesitter. He followed our instructions very well and was very responsive to any questions we presented during the time he was working with us. He also sent us frequent periodic updates with multiple pictures of our pupper. We've had Mathew dog/housesit for us multiple times now and we're very confident in his ability and professionalism. Can't recommend enough.”

“This was our first time using Rover and we were very nervous. We have had great experience with dogsitters AND awful ones in the past. We were looking for someone responsive, responsible, calm, loving towards the dogs, good communication and trustworthy. Bryan was quick to respond to messages and to meet with us and our dogs. We came home after our trip and the dogs were happy, healthy and well-taken care of. The house was good also. We are very happy to have found Bryan and will definitely use him again!”

About: Growing up our family always had a variety of pets, of which I adored caring for, these pets included: indoor / outdoor cat, German shepherd dogs, hamsters, beta fish, and rabbits. There has never been a time in life where I have been able to live without a pet companion. The exception to this was during COVID when my beloved bunny rabbit stayed behind during my relocation process, I love him so much I hired the most loving rabbit boarder take care of him until he was ready to make the trip out to California - two years later! I love our pets and would go to the end of the world for them, I am now happy to extend this love and care for not only my furry bffs…but yours as well! I am currently working a rotational full time schedule, which allows me a lot of free time every other week! This allows for plenty of flexibility in my schedule. I have experience with a range of collars and leashes, making it easy to keep your furry friend safe. I am able to utilize a crate if this is preferred. I utilize my knowledge of your pet’s baseline temperament to ensure their comfortability, paying attention to changes in their behaviour to avoid stressful situations.

Finding the right sitter for Scout is something we take seriously and Hope exceeded every expectation! She kept us updated throughout our trip and Scout clearly adored his time with her. We would highly recommend her without hesitation and look forward to booking with her again!

Casey did an excellent job of taking care of my fur baby and my house. He went the extra mile of giving her a bath when he noticed her itching, and sent daily pictures of her. The house was spotless when we returned home. I highly recommend Casey and will definitely ask him to take care of my baby again in the future.

Mathew was an excellent dog/housesitter. He followed our instructions very well and was very responsive to any questions we presented during the time he was working with us. He also sent us frequent periodic updates with multiple pictures of our pupper. We've had Mathew dog/housesit for us multiple times now and we're very confident in his ability and professionalism. Can't recommend enough.

Margot was fantastic! She watched our anxious dog and house for a full week, kept the plants watered, and sent daily updates that put our minds at ease the whole time. We felt completely assured leaving our pup in her care and will absolutely book her again. Highly recommend!

I can’t recommend our pet sitter highly enough! She has been absolutely wonderful with Mimi, our Shih Tzu, who requires medication three times a day. From the moment we left, she took excellent care of her and made us feel completely at ease. Her communication is exceptional, she keeps us updated throughout the entire day, from morning to night, with pictures and updates on how Mimi is doing. It’s so reassuring to know she is being well cared for, especially with her medication schedule. She also makes sure Mimi gets her daily walks, lots of attention, and plenty of love. It’s clear that she genuinely cares about the pets she looks after and treats them like her own. We came home to a happy, well cared for Mimi, and I’m so grateful for the peace of mind she gave us while we were away. We will absolutely be booking her again!

Dawn was absolutely incredible. She was super communicative, took tons of photos of my two golden retrievers for the days she was watching them, and even took them for a hike one day (after getting my blessing). My girls were incredibly happy with her and clearly well taken care of when I got home. She was conscientious throughout the process, and made the stressful process of trusting my babies with a different person incredibly easy. If I have to go away again, I will happily rebook with Dawn!
We had such a great experience with Parind! Our Shepard mix loved his playful and loving energy from the start. It was clear that he was genuinely loved and well cared for while we were away. Parind was communicative, sent us pictures and updates, and was very respectful of our home. We felt completely comfortable knowing our pup was in such trustworthy hands. We would happily have him again!

Rover makes budgeting the cost of House Sitting easy. As long as your dates and pet profiles are correct, the price you see before you book is the same price you pay for House Sitting. For more information on service fees, click here .
As of September 2026, there are 8,981 sitters on Rover offering House Sitting across San Mateo. Enter your ZIP code to see which available sitters are closest to your home.
Beyond belly rubs and feeding schedules, a house sitter’s presence may provide an additional layer of security for your home. However, you will need to arrange overnight stays and other household tasks with your sitter when reaching out to them. Not all sitters offer the same services. Common household tasks you can negotiate include:
- Mail & deliveries: Collecting letters and packages so they don't pile up.
- Plant care: Keeping your indoor or outdoor garden hydrated.
- Trash & recycling: Taking trash cans to the curb on scheduled pickup days.
- Home security: Sitters can stay overnight to keep your home occupied.
The best way to align on expectations is during your free Meet & Greet. Use this time to provide a "home cheat sheet" that includes your preferred San Mateo walking routes, the location of your favorite pet store, and any specific quirks about your home’s security or appliances.
It’s helpful to think of house sitting as a "home base" service. Most sitters in San Mateo maintain their normal daily routines, like running errands or heading to the office, meaning your pet should be comfortable being alone for a few hours at a time. If your pet needs a little extra company, here is how to find the perfect match:
- Look for "WFH" sitters: Many sitters mention "Work from Home" on their profile to indicate they’ll be present for the majority of the day.
- Update your pet’s profile: Write down how long your pet can comfortably be left alone. This helps sitters quickly determine if their schedule aligns with your needs.
- Communicate 24/7 needs: Standard house sitting usually doesn't include constant supervision. If your pet requires round-the-clock care, be sure to discuss this upfront.
Tip: Use the Meet & Greet to confirm a sitter's typical "away" windows. Transparency ensures your pet stays happy and your sitter can plan their day effectively!
Key handling is entirely up to you and your sitter to agree on during the Meet & Greet or in the Rover app. Most pet parents in San Mateo choose to hand over a spare key or digital fob in person, while others arrange a lockbox or unique access code. Don't forget to discuss key returns as well!
The Rover Guarantee is Rover’s commitment to your peace of mind every time you book. It includes 24/7 customer support, sitter access to advice from qualified veterinary professionals for diagnostic issues, and a reimbursement program for eligible veterinary care in the rare event something goes wrong.
All bookings are backed by the Rover Guarantee , which provides up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care reimbursement.
Every sitter on Rover is required to pass a background check before listing their services. This process confirms their identity and indicates they are not on the Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Public Website or have any disqualifying offenses.
Beyond ID checks, you can review each sitter's star rating, read verified reviews from other pet parents, and see how many repeat clients they have. Every booking is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care. For more details, visit Rover's Trust & Safety page .
If a health concern arises during a stay, your sitter is instructed to contact you and our Trust & Safety team immediately and, if needed, take your pet to the closest veterinarian. Through our Trust & Safety support team, sitters can ask for diagnostic advice from a qualified veterinary professional if your pet is showing signs of possible illness.
For extra peace of mind, you can also prepare an authorization form for your regular vet. An authorization form outlines your preferred method of care and allows your sitter to bring your pet into their regular clinic.
Every qualified booking made on Rover is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes reimbursement for eligible emergency vet care.
A Meet & Greet is a short introductory meeting between you, your pet, and a sitter. It can take place in person or virtually, although we recommend in-person so that your pet can get to know your sitter or the new environment. During the Meet & Greet, you will have a chance to walk through your pet's routine, medical needs, and unique quirks. Take the time to ask your sitter questions about their skills and expertise, and make sure the fit feels right for everyone. Most pet parents and sitters on Rover welcome Meet & Greets because the process can give confidence and peace of mind for service experiences, especially for longer stays or first-time bookings.
Sitters on Rover set their own cancellation policy, which you can find on their profile under their calendar availability.
Cancelling before a booking begins and before the sitter's cutoff time qualifies you for a full refund. Same-day cancellations for walks, day care, and drop-ins follow the full refund policy. Otherwise, for dog boarding and house sitting, you will receive a 50% refund for the first seven days of the booking and a 100% refund for the remaining days when you cancel the same day a booking should begin.
If your sitter needs to cancel within seven days of the booking's start date, then our reservation protection will kick in. This means our support team works with you to find a replacement sitter.
