My friend Sydney helped my puppy Xena learn “go to spot” and practice her “heel” outside. She was patient and rewarded Xena with her favorite treats to help make training easy for her. She did not push her past her limit and left room for her to make the right choice! I would highly recommend Sydney if you’re looking to get your pup trained by someone seasoned and experienced, she is so caring, genuine and just overall wonderful to work with!

We have been working with Chitra for almost two months now and are very impressed with her knowledge, her patience, and the positive progress we have been gradually seeing in our dog. We adopted a two year old dog around five months ago who is very shy, timid, and anxious around other humans. Chitra has been working closely with us weekly to build her confidence and desensitize her around others. We are very happy with the forward momentum we have been making, and look forward to continue working with her.

Katie was SO HELPFUL. She taught me what behaviors to look for that would indicate my dog is adjusting well to a new situation versus is totally overwhelmed and needs a minute. She also had some clever practical techniques for me to use to work on my dog’s separation anxiety. I appreciated how she was able to balance the dog’s needs with my own needs and create a training plan that aligned with both. Will definitely be working with her again.

James was great to work with! We had a phone consultation before which walked me through his process, and then once he got here, we immediately went straight to work. I feel 100x better communicating my dog after one session with James, and we have a clear thought out plan of what to work on while we book our next session. Looking forward to continuing to work with James!

Jenna was absolutely fantastic with my little guy. My dog has a big personality and is very anxious and defensive of me, Jenna was ready for all of that immediately. In addition to asking about his health issues prior, she came so prepared to help me and did so well at that! I’m a huge pushover with my dog and I care so much about him being happy and she totally got that. I’m super excited to work with Jenna again! Highly recommend.

Billy has a natural ability to communicate with dogs of all sizes and ages to lead them in great behavior. Our friends and family call him a natural dog whisperer since he was very young. We have always had rescues of strong breeds and Billy has participated in training them from day one. Billy understands what motivates each different dog and uses calm assertiveness to accomplish goals. He also uses hand signals for those older pups. I highly recommend him as a trainer.

Laura’s approach to dog training and behavior is a breath of fresh air. Her mix of evidence-based technique and compassion gave me and my partner the information we needed alongside newfound confidence in our ability to rehabilitate unwanted behaviors in our pup, Milton. We would recommend working with Laura to anyone who is seeking a kind, evidence-based trainer, and we greatly look forward to continuing our work with her.

Excellent. Showed me ways to use a clicker and treats to reinforce good behavior Also what to do about her jumping up on people. Was very patient with my dog and me! Had suggestions about other ways to stimulate her brain and keep her less bored.

Dog Training FAQs

Frequently asked questions about Rover

Trainers listing on Rover must be credentialed dog trainers, commit to reward-based training methods, and pass a background check to offer dog training in Somerville.

Reward-based training encourages dogs to offer desired behaviors by reinforcing the behavior with something the dog likes; treats, play, or toys. Reward-based training prioritizes using the least intrusive intervention; it promotes thinking rather than punishing mistakes.

When rewards are used, the likelihood the behavior is repeated increases. The positive connection to the reward results in making learning enjoyable, strengthens the human animal bond and over time leads to consistent desired behaviors.

Training can happen many places — your home, a park, a store, or anywhere else that you and your trainer decide is best for the training you are doing! Many trainers will recommend training in your home. This allows them to observe your dog in their natural environment so they can effectively assess and best help reach your training goals.

Trainers will often mention on their profile where they typically hold training sessions, but you can always contact a trainer to learn more!

If you’re searching for a dog trainer in Somerville for the first time, visit the trainer’s profile and select the Contact button.

If you have an active request or have booked a service with a trainer before, learn more about how to do this in the Rover app or on your computer.

Rover makes it easy to find Somerville dog trainers to provide loving care from their own home. The background-checked, 5-star trainers you can find on Rover will work with you and your dog to build new skills and address behaviors. Dog trainers can work on:

  • Puppy training, adult dog training, agility training, clicker training and advanced training.
  • Behaviors such as barking, leash manners, leash reactivity, house manners, jumping, fearful behavior, anxious behavior, separation distress, recall, biting, chewing, mouthiness, potty training and resource guarding.

Of course! Having a trainer that is the right fit for both you and your pup is an important step to reaching your training goals. We recommend reaching out to any trainer that interests you. Your initial request is not final until both you and the trainer decide you want to move forward with booking.

Also, trainers may offer or require consultations. Make sure to ask trainers so you can make the best decision for you and your pet.

Many trainers on Rover indicate experience in a wide range of behaviors, from puppy training to more advanced behaviors and training types.

Review a trainer’s profile to see if their experience aligns with your needs, and if you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact them to ensure they’re the right trainer for you and your pet.

We get it—sometimes plans change and you may need to cancel your dog training service. You can cancel an upcoming booking directly from the Rover app or your computer, in accordance with your trainer’s cancellation policy.

Note: If your dog trainer requested to cancel this booking, then they need to cancel from their account. Please contact them via Rover Messages.
