“I am so happy with the care everyone received!! Excellent communication, she sent pictures and gave multiple daily updates throughout her stay. I just love Alyssa and the dogs, cats, and horses do too!!”

“Loren was awesome taking care of our 3 dogs. She sent a lot of pictures and kept in touch keeping our minds at ease during our vacation. I would recommend her taking care of other people’s animals.”

“Taylor was amazing! I reached out to Taylor last minute for a few nights of house sitting with our zoo. Our dogs all have different personalities but she made sure to cater to them all. I am so glad I found her as she was extremely accommodating and made sure to keep me updated throughout my trip away from home.”

“I trusted Ayla with my pets and plants for a long 10 night booking and she did not disappoint. She was prompt and consistent with communication. She sent frequent updates and made sure that my 3 animals were comfortable, happy, and very well taken care of. She also took great care of my plants, and they even look better than when I left them. She cleaned the house and changed the sheets at the end of her stay, which was not expected, but a nice addition to the experience. Overall, I would highly recommend and will definitely book her again.”

“Charley took excellent care of our boys! When we came home, I think they were disappointed to see us instead of her! She treated our home with the utmost respect and we couldn’t ask for anything more! We’ve already booked our next request with her and will absolutely continue using her when our boys need a buddy to hang out with.”

“We'd give John 10 stars if it were an option. He took magnificent care of our 2 boys. He sent multiple pics and videos every day. And went above and beyond by picking up our mail, dealing with Amazon deliveries, stripped and washed the sheets from the bed he slept in, and even cleaned the fridge! Hands down the best pet-sitter we've ever hired!!”
About: Having had dogs since I was born, and my entire life, I've always been the one in my family to teach them (sit, speak, paw, spin) and care for them when no one else is home. I have cared for a range of dog and cat breeds from when they were babies to in their old age. I hope to care for your animals too. I have a dog, I care for it everyday, and I am currently (June 2026) fostering another dog for a couple of weeks while its owner recovers from surgery. I take them on walks daily and play outside with them. We watch tv and sometimes I read to them (it doesn’t last, they get bored of it). As an owner of a dog with a chicken allergy I can understand specific needs, I prefer a more lax and chilled environment and my energy usually gets pets to follow.
“Tyler was excellent! Sent lots of photos of both dogs. He was super attentive to one of my dog's health needs which was greatly appreciated. Left the house in great condition. I'll definitely be using Tyler again!”

“If I could’ve given more than five stars, I would have!!! Aaliyah was fabulous! We love her the dogs love her. The house was in perfect shape. I can’t thank her enough!”

About: I have had several pets my whole life, though for the last several years I have been soley responsibly for my own dogs, including a dashing senior citizen. I currently live with a puppy that I am helping to raise and train. At the time of writing, I do no not have anything else going on, giving me plenty of time to dedicate to your baby/ies! My only exemption is Monday, though every other day I am free at all hours of the day. Though I no longer live with a fenced yard, I am well versed in helping a dog (aged from puppy to senior) outside to go potty, as well as taking on walks to provide that time. I am comfortable with crate training as well as feeding routines, adaptable to whatever works best to get that pup to eat.
“Bethany was an amazing sitter! She took great care of our 3 pugs. One of our senior pugs needed medication following a hospital stay and Bethany managed her care-plan with ease. We were able to enjoy our time away from home knowing our pets were receiving great care and attention! Highly recommend Bethany to care for your pets!”

“Nicole has watch our senior dogs twice, and I’m looking forward to the next time. She also noticed the heat was stressing out some of my plants and she watered them without me asking. Which was much appreciated!”

“Amanda was great!!! She took great care of Nova and sent me plenty of pics and updates about my baby. She also left the cutest report card about her time with Nova and how everything went. Super dependable and kind!!”

About: I've cared for a wide range of animals in my life; but mostly cats and dogs. I've grown up taking care of cats and dogs and I find it very easy and fun to work with them. I've raised kittens and puppies, as well as elderly animals. I have no issues with feeding, walking, or cleaning up after any animal. During the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025, I have some time off from college and want to spend that extra time interacting with pets! I can work every day of the week and the weekend and can also do overnight care. I have a very reactive dog at my house that can be hard to control, but I'm able to get him on walks without escaping my grip. I'm stronger than I look! But I also treat animals with the utmost respect and kindness. I don't believe in negative reinforcement and I will treat your pet like royalty!

About: I’m Dom, a new, but reliable pet sitter! I’ve casually looked after pets before, but I am now looking to gain more experience. I am more knowledgeable about cats, and prefer to sit them, but I love dogs too! I am passionate about everything I do, and am always willing to go above and beyond. I look forward to hearing from you. I have two dogs of my own who are around 3 years olds, and I’ve done drop ins and dog walks before. I currently work casually and take online classes at college, meaning that I have plenty of time to play and hangout with your fur babies! I like to receive specific instructions, and I base of my care off that and breed knowledge. I am very good at following instructions and asking clarifying questions if there is any doubt.
“Skipper did an excellent job. I am so thankful he came and took such good care of my cats. The automatic feeder has a gel pack to keep out moisture broke and dispersed into the food. It was the perfect example of why even with an automatic feeder it is important to have someone check on the animals. Skipper provided excellent communication and updates.”

About: I have over three years of hands-on experience caring for dogs of all breeds, sizes, and personalities. I’ve helped friends, family, and neighbors with everything from walks and feeding to playtime and daily routines. I’m patient, reliable, and always focused on making sure each dog feels safe, comfortable, and happy while you’re away. I have a flexible schedule, which lets me give dogs plenty of attention throughout the day. I’m especially available on weekends and can easily help with longer stays, walks, or drop-in visits when needed. Your dog’s safety and comfort are always my top priorities. I stick closely to your instructions—whether that’s feeding schedules, walk preferences, or any special care needs. I also make sure pets feel relaxed and cared for, keeping their environment clean, secure, and stress-free. At this time, I provide care in clients’ homes so your dog can stay in a familiar environment and keep their normal routine. I treat every dog like they’re my own and always aim to give them a positive, comfortable experience. I’m a full-time student at UNC, which gives me a relatively flexible schedule during the week. I’m able to fit pet care into my daily routine and give dogs consistent attention throughout the day. I’m especially open and available on weekends, making it easy to accommodate longer stays, walks, or drop-in visits as needed. Your dog’s safety and comfort are my top priorities. I follow owners’ instructions closely, including feeding routines, walk preferences, and any special care needs. I always supervise interactions, keep environments clean and secure, and make sure dogs feel calm and comfortable. Whether caring for pets in my home or yours, I treat every dog with patience, respect, and the same level of care I would expect for my own.
“Erin was great with our dogs and our house! We needed a last minute sitter and thankfully she was available. She was very responsive and sent so many updates and pictures while we were away. She kept our dogs and house in great condition, which made coming home smooth!”

Pet parents share their Rover experiences - Shotwell
Alyssa is always so thoughtful when caring for our senior girl- who would definitely bark at me if she knew I called her that! Lucy is never stressed when we leave or when we return- and for older pupper parents, y'all know they love their routines. Any person able to help our best companions enjoy their “retirement” is worth gold in our book- and that’s true for Alyssa.

Myeisha was absolutely wonderful. Communicative, timely, and stayed overnight at my house for 4 nights while we were on vacation. I’m truly grateful as she took great care of my dog and my cat and my home too, vacuuming, taking out the trash, and putting the bedding in the wash before she left. Truly wonderful!

Frequently asked questions about Rover

Beyond belly rubs and feeding schedules, a house sitter’s presence may provide an additional layer of security for your home. However, you will need to arrange overnight stays and other household tasks with your sitter when reaching out to them. Not all sitters offer the same services. Common household tasks you can negotiate include:
- Mail & deliveries: Collecting letters and packages so they don't pile up.
- Plant care: Keeping your indoor or outdoor garden hydrated.
- Trash & recycling: Taking trash cans to the curb on scheduled pickup days.
- Home security: Sitters can stay overnight to keep your home occupied.
The best way to align on expectations is during your free Meet & Greet. Use this time to provide a "home cheat sheet" that includes your preferred Shotwell walking routes, the location of your favorite pet store, and any specific quirks about your home’s security or appliances.
It’s helpful to think of house sitting as a "home base" service. Most sitters in Shotwell maintain their normal daily routines, like running errands or heading to the office, meaning your pet should be comfortable being alone for a few hours at a time. If your pet needs a little extra company, here is how to find the perfect match:
- Look for "WFH" sitters: Many sitters mention "Work from Home" on their profile to indicate they’ll be present for the majority of the day.
- Update your pet’s profile: Write down how long your pet can comfortably be left alone. This helps sitters quickly determine if their schedule aligns with your needs.
- Communicate 24/7 needs: Standard house sitting usually doesn't include constant supervision. If your pet requires round-the-clock care, be sure to discuss this upfront.
Tip: Use the Meet & Greet to confirm a sitter's typical "away" windows. Transparency ensures your pet stays happy and your sitter can plan their day effectively!
Key handling is entirely up to you and your sitter to agree on during the Meet & Greet or in the Rover app. Most pet parents in Shotwell choose to hand over a spare key or digital fob in person, while others arrange a lockbox or unique access code. Don't forget to discuss key returns as well!
The Rover Guarantee is Rover’s commitment to your peace of mind every time you book. It includes 24/7 customer support, sitter access to advice from qualified veterinary professionals for diagnostic issues, and a reimbursement program for eligible veterinary care in the rare event something goes wrong.
All bookings are backed by the Rover Guarantee , which provides up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care reimbursement.
Every sitter on Rover is required to pass a background check before listing their services. This process confirms their identity and indicates they are not on the Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Public Website or have any disqualifying offenses.
Beyond ID checks, you can review each sitter's star rating, read verified reviews from other pet parents, and see how many repeat clients they have. Every booking is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care. For more details, visit Rover's Trust & Safety page .
If a health concern arises during a stay, your sitter is instructed to contact you and our Trust & Safety team immediately and, if needed, take your pet to the closest veterinarian. Through our Trust & Safety support team, sitters can ask for diagnostic advice from a qualified veterinary professional if your pet is showing signs of possible illness.
For extra peace of mind, you can also prepare an authorization form for your regular vet. An authorization form outlines your preferred method of care and allows your sitter to bring your pet into their regular clinic.
Every qualified booking made on Rover is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes reimbursement for eligible emergency vet care.
A Meet & Greet is a short introductory meeting between you, your pet, and a sitter. It can take place in person or virtually, although we recommend in-person so that your pet can get to know your sitter or the new environment. During the Meet & Greet, you will have a chance to walk through your pet's routine, medical needs, and unique quirks. Take the time to ask your sitter questions about their skills and expertise, and make sure the fit feels right for everyone. Most pet parents and sitters on Rover welcome Meet & Greets because the process can give confidence and peace of mind for service experiences, especially for longer stays or first-time bookings.
Sitters on Rover set their own cancellation policy, which you can find on their profile under their calendar availability.
Cancelling before a booking begins and before the sitter's cutoff time qualifies you for a full refund. Same-day cancellations for walks, day care, and drop-ins follow the full refund policy. Otherwise, for dog boarding and house sitting, you will receive a 50% refund for the first seven days of the booking and a 100% refund for the remaining days when you cancel the same day a booking should begin.
If your sitter needs to cancel within seven days of the booking's start date, then our reservation protection will kick in. This means our support team works with you to find a replacement sitter.
Yes, you can find sitters who have experience with handling special pet needs in Shotwell. On Rover:
- 91% of sitters can help with special care needs
- 96% can help with giving oral medications or injections
- 98% can help with daily exercise
You can also find pet sitters on Rover who accept only one pet at a time, which is ideal for anxious puppies, kittens, or senior pets who move at a gentler pace. Some sitters will also list availability for 24/7 care, also known as constant care, in their profiles.
Use the search filters to narrow down sitters whose specific experience or environment meets your pet's needs. When reaching out to your sitter, outline your pet's care routine and use the Meet & Greet to walk your sitter through your expectations.
