Mike is our go-to sitter now for Red. They love each other and I have zero worries when I leave, even if i can’t overlap with Mike and don’t have much time to go over things. He figured it all out very quickly and makes it so easy for us.

Kelly was absolutely wonderful with Bidu! From the moment they met, he instantly warmed up to her, which gave us so much peace of mind. She carefully followed all of our instructions and kept us updated with frequent messages and photos. The sweetest part was when we met her the next day to hand off our key. Bidu was overjoyed to see her again, and that truly said it all. We knew our boy was in excellent hands with Kelly, and we wholeheartedly recommend her!

Stephanie stayed at our house with our two cats during a holiday week. She was beyond fantastic! Throughout the week, she sent us adorable snapshots and videos and kept us in the loop about their funny shenanigans. She also made easy work of a complicated refrigerated auto-feeder setup we have one of our cats on. We returned to a spotless home! Our two cats were not just cared for but clearly loved. Stephanie's competence and warmth made our vacation worry-free. Couldn’t more highly recommend!

10/10! Rosalva was great with our two dogs, and they can be a handful (reactive to other dogs and new people). After several meet & greets, we felt confident leaving the dogs in her care for an extended trip. And when we got home, the pups were happy & healthy and our home was just as we left it. Highly recommend!

We reached out to Cordigen with a last-minute request, and she was incredibly accommodating, kind, and flexible from our very first messages and meeting. She immediately recognized that our pup needed support with calm greetings and was so thoughtful in how she approached her, speaking softly and offering gentle, kind reminders to Scout not to jump. Throughout the day, Cordigen was wonderfully communicative, sending photos and updates so we always knew how Scout was doing. She even played calming music on the TV and was happily playing with Scout in the backyard when I arrived home. At pickup, she gave a detailed rundown of the day, from bathroom breaks to how she helped Scout stay calm when she heard noises outside. We truly couldn’t be happier to have found Cordigen as a sitter and would enthusiastically recommend her to anyone looking for dog care, especially for dogs who may be a bit anxious or need extra help staying calm. Thank you, Cordigen!

Tianyu (Scarlett) was absolutely incredible! From the start, she did a meet & greet with our dog Lola and asked thoughtful questions — setting the tone for just how attentive and caring she is. She house sat and cared for Lola for 5 days, sending detailed daily updates and photos that gave us total peace of mind. She was also extremely responsive whenever we reached out, and when we got home, the house was spotless. Truly above and beyond care — for both Lola and our home! We’d absolutely recommend Scarlett to anyone looking for a sitter who will treat your pet and home with the utmost care. We’ll definitely be booking her again! 🐾

About: I used to volunteer at my local animal shelter, where I spent my free time walking and caring for dogs. I loved getting to know each dog’s unique personality and making sure they got the exercise and attention they needed. I truly miss it, and I’m excited to spend time caring for your pup like they’re my own. (I also love running please let me know if you want me to take your dog on a run!) Free on the weekends! During the week I’m free in the mornings or after work at 3pm! Would love to interact with animals more since I can’t own any in my apartment. I’m very used to big dogs and or aggressive cats it’s very situational but I’m confident I can handle any pet! I don’t offer boarding at my place unfortunately.

Kristin exceeded every expectation—constant care, genuine engagement with my dog, a perfect routine, and a truly happy, very active dog. I found Kristin after a very thorough search, as it is absolutely essential to me that my dog is not left alone for more than a very short time. She not only respected that—she exceeded every expectation. A big part of my dog’s happiness is her walks, and Kristin took her on long, frequent walks every day. Just as important—if not more—is her feeding routine, which is central to her happiness. She has four main meals per day, plus a small supper and treats in between. I typically combine meals with training and play, and Kristin followed this routine exactly and with great care. Kristin truly engaged with my dog—playing with her both indoors and outdoors, grooming her, and even having her sleep in bed with her at night. She also sent me photos every day, which gave me complete peace of mind. She went above and beyond in ways I did not expect—she even bought my dog a new toy and a bag of treats, which says a lot about how much she genuinely cares. I returned to an exceptionally happy, relaxed, and well-cared-for dog. My dog is very perceptive, and it was immediately clear that she had formed a strong bond with Kristin—they were practically inseparable during the stay. On top of that, the house was left very clean and in perfect condition, with everything exactly as I left it. I would trust Kristin again without hesitation and highly recommend her.

Rachel was really outstanding. She took such great care of our dog. Munchi was calm and relaxed and playful while we were gone, which is such a great thing to know while traveling. Rachel also treated our house really well, so much so we wondered if she was even there :) Thank you, Rachel. Great job!

FAQs for House Sitting - Portola Valley

Frequently asked questions about Rover

The average cost for House Sitting in Portola Valley on Rover is $66.6 per night (as of August 2026). However, all sitters set their own rates based on experience, location, and availability.

Rover makes budgeting the cost of House Sitting easy. As long as your dates and pet profiles are correct, the price you see before you book is the same price you pay for House Sitting. For more information on service fees, click here .

As of August 2026, there are 8,739 sitters on Rover offering House Sitting across Portola Valley. Enter your ZIP code to see which available sitters are closest to your home.

Beyond belly rubs and feeding schedules, a house sitter’s presence may provide an additional layer of security for your home. However, you will need to arrange overnight stays and other household tasks with your sitter when reaching out to them. Not all sitters offer the same services. Common household tasks you can negotiate include:

  • Mail & deliveries: Collecting letters and packages so they don't pile up.
  • Plant care: Keeping your indoor or outdoor garden hydrated.
  • Trash & recycling: Taking trash cans to the curb on scheduled pickup days.
  • Home security: Sitters can stay overnight to keep your home occupied.

The best way to align on expectations is during your free Meet & Greet. Use this time to provide a "home cheat sheet" that includes your preferred Portola Valley walking routes, the location of your favorite pet store, and any specific quirks about your home’s security or appliances.

It’s helpful to think of house sitting as a "home base" service. Most sitters in Portola Valley maintain their normal daily routines, like running errands or heading to the office, meaning your pet should be comfortable being alone for a few hours at a time. If your pet needs a little extra company, here is how to find the perfect match:

  • Look for "WFH" sitters: Many sitters mention "Work from Home" on their profile to indicate they’ll be present for the majority of the day.
  • Update your pet’s profile: Write down how long your pet can comfortably be left alone. This helps sitters quickly determine if their schedule aligns with your needs.
  • Communicate 24/7 needs: Standard house sitting usually doesn't include constant supervision. If your pet requires round-the-clock care, be sure to discuss this upfront.

Tip: Use the Meet & Greet to confirm a sitter's typical "away" windows. Transparency ensures your pet stays happy and your sitter can plan their day effectively!

Key handling is entirely up to you and your sitter to agree on during the Meet & Greet or in the Rover app. Most pet parents in Portola Valley choose to hand over a spare key or digital fob in person, while others arrange a lockbox or unique access code. Don't forget to discuss key returns as well!

The Rover Guarantee is Rover’s commitment to your peace of mind every time you book. It includes 24/7 customer support, sitter access to advice from qualified veterinary professionals for diagnostic issues, and a reimbursement program for eligible veterinary care in the rare event something goes wrong.

All bookings are backed by the Rover Guarantee , which provides up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care reimbursement.

Every sitter on Rover is required to pass a background check before listing their services. This process confirms their identity and indicates they are not on the Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Public Website or have any disqualifying offenses.

Beyond ID checks, you can review each sitter's star rating, read verified reviews from other pet parents, and see how many repeat clients they have. Every booking is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care. For more details, visit Rover's Trust & Safety page .

If a health concern arises during a stay, your sitter is instructed to contact you and our Trust & Safety team immediately and, if needed, take your pet to the closest veterinarian. Through our Trust & Safety support team, sitters can ask for diagnostic advice from a qualified veterinary professional if your pet is showing signs of possible illness.

For extra peace of mind, you can also prepare an authorization form for your regular vet. An authorization form outlines your preferred method of care and allows your sitter to bring your pet into their regular clinic.

Every qualified booking made on Rover is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes reimbursement for eligible emergency vet care.

A Meet & Greet is a short introductory meeting between you, your pet, and a sitter. It can take place in person or virtually, although we recommend in-person so that your pet can get to know your sitter or the new environment. During the Meet & Greet, you will have a chance to walk through your pet's routine, medical needs, and unique quirks. Take the time to ask your sitter questions about their skills and expertise, and make sure the fit feels right for everyone. Most pet parents and sitters on Rover welcome Meet & Greets because the process can give confidence and peace of mind for service experiences, especially for longer stays or first-time bookings.

Sitters on Rover set their own cancellation policy, which you can find on their profile under their calendar availability.

Cancelling before a booking begins and before the sitter's cutoff time qualifies you for a full refund. Same-day cancellations for walks, day care, and drop-ins follow the full refund policy. Otherwise, for dog boarding and house sitting, you will receive a 50% refund for the first seven days of the booking and a 100% refund for the remaining days when you cancel the same day a booking should begin.

If your sitter needs to cancel within seven days of the booking's start date, then our reservation protection will kick in. This means our support team works with you to find a replacement sitter.

Yes, you can find sitters who have experience with handling special pet needs in Portola Valley. On Rover:

  • 92% of sitters can help with special care needs
  • 95% can help with giving oral medications or injections
  • 95% can help with daily exercise

You can also find pet sitters on Rover who accept only one pet at a time, which is ideal for anxious puppies, kittens, or senior pets who move at a gentler pace. Some sitters will also list availability for 24/7 care, also known as constant care, in their profiles.

Use the search filters to narrow down sitters whose specific experience or environment meets your pet's needs. When reaching out to your sitter, outline your pet's care routine and use the Meet & Greet to walk your sitter through your expectations.
