“I cannot recommend Ryan highly enough! Leaving my high-needs, anxious dog for a work trip is always a source of stress, but Ryan completely put my mind at ease. From our initial meet-and-greet, it was clear that Ryan is not only a true animal lover but also incredibly knowledgeable and patient. My dog requires a lot of extra attention and can be quite nervous with new people, but Ryan handled him with such a calm and confident demeanor. I received regular updates, including photos that showed my dog was not just being cared for, but was comfortable in Ryan's hands. This consistent communication was invaluable and allowed me to focus on my work knowing Oliver was okay. Ryan went above and beyond to alleviate his anxiety and let him have the space he need to feel comfortable. I returned home to a happy, relaxed dog, which is the best indicator of the excellent care he received. In addition, the house was spotless which is always nice to return home too. If you're looking for a pet sitter who is reliable, compassionate, and truly understands how to care for anxious or high-needs pets, Ryan is absolutely the one to choose.”

“Bret accepted our short notice booking and stopped by for a meet & greet before we headed out for a weekend trip, which was great. Our pets are currently pretty low maintenance but it was important for us to have someone stay the weekend while we had some R&R. We’d have Bret back on a future vacation.”
“Madeleine took excellent care of my cats while I was away! She sent pictures daily and gave updates with each visit. I will definitely use her services in the future!”
“Our boys had another awesome stay with Viva!!! She takes such wonderful care of them at our home and always sends plenty of updates and pictures! Thank you!”

“John was an awesome pupsitter and we would definitely hire him again! He was communicative, thorough, and very attentive to our 2 dogs over the course of the week that he watched them. Highly recommend him!”

“Celine was a wonderful companion for our somewhat anxious dog. She provided regular updates, great communication, and left our place very clean at the end of her stay. We highly recommend her!”

“My dog loves Nishat! She has such a calming energy and puts my nervous dog instantly at ease. Nishat came to the rescue when family emergencies left little time for making arrangements, and made sure Beesly was safe and happy while I was away. She sends lots of photo updates during her stay and really dotes on my dog. Beesly and I are so happy to have found Nishat!”

About: I’ve had dogs my whole life, and have been helping to care for them (walking, feeding, etc.) since I was around 10 years old. I’ve pet sit for many family friends throughout the years - dogs and cats alike. Recently I even housesat for 4 dogs and 2 cats all at the same time! My family dogs both recently passed away and I’ve been looking for something to fill the whole in my heart. Would love to take care of your pets! I am a freelance writer, musician, and retail associate, so I’m able to make my own schedule a lot of the time. I’m free during the day Monday-Thursday to walk your pooch or for drop-in visits, and I’m available after work on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays (I typically get off around 3-5 pm). I can walk, feed, or house sit for your dogs or cats. Also just love spending time with them in general! Whatever you need, I’m here to help.
“Jay took good care of Iris while I was away over the holidays. I had requested daily communication, and Jay sent a picture or comment every day. When I had questions, Jay responded immediately. Iris was clearly well cared-for, and her coat has never looked better, thanks to Jay's grooming. Jay left the house clean and organized. We had travel interruptions and were unable to fly home as planned, and Jay helpfully agreed to stay on longer than planned.”

“We hired Sami to look after our 11yo staffi Uzi over the Christmas break. Sami was very responsive and they took the best care of Uzi. They kept us informed daily, and paid close attention to Uzi’s health as she is very old and has cancer. Sami took great care of our house as well and we’d definitely hire them again if need be. Uzi is reactive with other dogs and Sami still agreed to watch her and walk her in our dog-filled neighborhood. Thanks again to them!”

About: I have always loved both dogs and cats since I was a kid! I have been around dogs since I was little and I live with a cat now! I would adore taking your furry friend for a walk or checking up on your cat when you are away. I am currently trying to fit dog walking into my schedule in the mornings before my job starts (STARTING IN MAY). I can also check up on your furry friend in the evening. I am also building my online business so days I am not at my other job are more flexible! I am very good at directions and pay attention to details. I will follow the directions left by the owners when doing a check in! I listen to the pet, and if they are not so sure of me, I let them come to me (especially with cats!) And of course there will be lots of pets!
“Sarah was amazing! She was available for a last minute booking with Athena and stayed at our house. Her communication was prompt, and we felt at ease on our trip knowing Athena was well taken care of. Will definitely reach out for future trips!”

“Sarah was excellent at taking care of Sesame and Bob. I felt at ease knowing they were under her care while I was away. She gave constant updates and took photos of the dogs so that I know they were doing good. Thanks so much for taking good care of them!”

“Emily was great with our 3 dogs, fish, and bearded dragon while we were away for two weeks! I felt at ease the entirety of our trip with her watching our animals. She kept us updated with pictures and was available if we needed to contact her. I wouldn't hesitate to book with her again”

“Elise was so caring and supportive of our pup, Juniper! She provided us with really lovely photos and updates, and clearly made Juniper feel safe and loved. We highly recommend her!”

Sami was promptly responsive to messages when setting up our house sitting. Sami was calm and patient when meeting our dog who can be a little anxious. We received detailed updates and pictures while we were gone. Our dog seemed very content. Our house was just as we left it when we returned. We plan to rebook with Sami, and we definitely recommend Sami!

Jackiellen watched my dog for the first time and I felt like he was in the best hands possible. She kept me updated throughout the day long visit (lots of texts and pictures) and also stayed longer just to keep an eye on my emotional pup. I felt very safe leaving Boone with her and he looked like he had a great time with walks, cuddles, playtime, and more. Will absolutely be using Jackiellen in the future for doggy play dates!

Jules was absolutely outstanding! She had wonderful communication with us, and really took the time to get to know us, our dog Daisy, and Daisy’s routine. She is absolutely wonderful with animals and treats them like they’re her own! Daisy is already looking forward to the next time Jules comes back to stay with her!

“Everything went really smoothly with Meagan” said Clover when being interviewed after the weekend. “Belly rubs, treats and cuddles were top notch. Though the guy that normally rubs my belly wasn’t hear, I barely even noticed since Meagan was clearly a pro. She took care of me and my little heart condition awesomely”, she continued. From that guy that is normally around, thanks for making that part of my quick weekend away stress free.

Kari did a wonderful job caring for our dog, Butters! She took care of his medical needs and was very good at communication, providing us routine updates and photos. She also left the house clean, which was greatly appreciated. We would be happy to have Kari back to help us out in the future and highly recommend her!

Viva is the absolute best!! I am so grateful to have found her and cannot recommend her enough. It’s such a relief to know your dog is not only in caring, knowledgeable hands but is also having the most fun day!! Our pup absolutely adores her. We appreciate all the picture updates she sends, her flexibility, clear communication, and her incredible positive energy.

Samantha did such a great job taking care of the dogs! Walking, snuggling, doing meds and generally helping them feel like they were home (they were!) and nothing had really changed (except I wasn't there). She sent me pictures of them so I could feel connected.

Beyond belly rubs and feeding schedules, a house sitter’s presence may provide an additional layer of security for your home. However, you will need to arrange overnight stays and other household tasks with your sitter when reaching out to them. Not all sitters offer the same services. Common household tasks you can negotiate include:
- Mail & deliveries: Collecting letters and packages so they don't pile up.
- Plant care: Keeping your indoor or outdoor garden hydrated.
- Trash & recycling: Taking trash cans to the curb on scheduled pickup days.
- Home security: Sitters can stay overnight to keep your home occupied.
The best way to align on expectations is during your free Meet & Greet. Use this time to provide a "home cheat sheet" that includes your preferred South Portland walking routes, the location of your favorite pet store, and any specific quirks about your home’s security or appliances.
It’s helpful to think of house sitting as a "home base" service. Most sitters in South Portland maintain their normal daily routines, like running errands or heading to the office, meaning your pet should be comfortable being alone for a few hours at a time. If your pet needs a little extra company, here is how to find the perfect match:
- Look for "WFH" sitters: Many sitters mention "Work from Home" on their profile to indicate they’ll be present for the majority of the day.
- Update your pet’s profile: Write down how long your pet can comfortably be left alone. This helps sitters quickly determine if their schedule aligns with your needs.
- Communicate 24/7 needs: Standard house sitting usually doesn't include constant supervision. If your pet requires round-the-clock care, be sure to discuss this upfront.
Tip: Use the Meet & Greet to confirm a sitter's typical "away" windows. Transparency ensures your pet stays happy and your sitter can plan their day effectively!
Key handling is entirely up to you and your sitter to agree on during the Meet & Greet or in the Rover app. Most pet parents in South Portland choose to hand over a spare key or digital fob in person, while others arrange a lockbox or unique access code. Don't forget to discuss key returns as well!
The Rover Guarantee is Rover’s commitment to your peace of mind every time you book. It includes 24/7 customer support, sitter access to advice from qualified veterinary professionals for diagnostic issues, and a reimbursement program for eligible veterinary care in the rare event something goes wrong.
All bookings are backed by the Rover Guarantee , which provides up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care reimbursement.
Every sitter on Rover is required to pass a background check before listing their services. This process confirms their identity and indicates they are not on the Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Public Website or have any disqualifying offenses.
Beyond ID checks, you can review each sitter's star rating, read verified reviews from other pet parents, and see how many repeat clients they have. Every booking is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care. For more details, visit Rover's Trust & Safety page .
If a health concern arises during a stay, your sitter is instructed to contact you and our Trust & Safety team immediately and, if needed, take your pet to the closest veterinarian. Through our Trust & Safety support team, sitters can ask for diagnostic advice from a qualified veterinary professional if your pet is showing signs of possible illness.
For extra peace of mind, you can also prepare an authorization form for your regular vet. An authorization form outlines your preferred method of care and allows your sitter to bring your pet into their regular clinic.
Every qualified booking made on Rover is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes reimbursement for eligible emergency vet care.
A Meet & Greet is a short introductory meeting between you, your pet, and a sitter. It can take place in person or virtually, although we recommend in-person so that your pet can get to know your sitter or the new environment. During the Meet & Greet, you will have a chance to walk through your pet's routine, medical needs, and unique quirks. Take the time to ask your sitter questions about their skills and expertise, and make sure the fit feels right for everyone. Most pet parents and sitters on Rover welcome Meet & Greets because the process can give confidence and peace of mind for service experiences, especially for longer stays or first-time bookings.
Sitters on Rover set their own cancellation policy, which you can find on their profile under their calendar availability.
Cancelling before a booking begins and before the sitter's cutoff time qualifies you for a full refund. Same-day cancellations for walks, day care, and drop-ins follow the full refund policy. Otherwise, for dog boarding and house sitting, you will receive a 50% refund for the first seven days of the booking and a 100% refund for the remaining days when you cancel the same day a booking should begin.
If your sitter needs to cancel within seven days of the booking's start date, then our reservation protection will kick in. This means our support team works with you to find a replacement sitter.
Yes, you can find sitters who have experience with handling special pet needs in South Portland. On Rover:
- 98% of sitters can help with special care needs

- 98% can help with daily exercise
You can also find pet sitters on Rover who accept only one pet at a time, which is ideal for anxious puppies, kittens, or senior pets who move at a gentler pace. Some sitters will also list availability for 24/7 care, also known as constant care, in their profiles.
Use the search filters to narrow down sitters whose specific experience or environment meets your pet's needs. When reaching out to your sitter, outline your pet's care routine and use the Meet & Greet to walk your sitter through your expectations.
