“Sophia was nothing short of amazing. It was my first time using Rover and I was definitely anxious but she sent pictures of them on walks, playing, etc. and kept me in the loop the whole time. She was easy to work with and made me feel so comfortable. And, most importantly, she made my boy feel comfortable too; he normally doesn't eat while I'm out of town but he ate great for her and clearly had a great time. I would 100% recommend her and am planning to hire her again.”

“Ryan was great in all areas. He took wonderful care of our dog, Butters. From handling medications and feeding, to going on walks, we were very happy with Ryan’s approach. He is a strong communicator and very friendly. He also kept the house very clean while we were away. We greatly appreciate his help and would be happy to use his services again!”

“Madeleine was such a wonderful pet sitter for our dog, Ozzie. She gave us lots of updates and we felt completely comfortable with him in her care! We will definitely use her again when we are traveling.”

“Sergey is a wonderful, kind man and took excellent care of our home and pets while we were out of town. Our cat needs a pill and a inhaler and he was completely unbothered. Will absolutely book with him again.”

“It was great to have John stay in our house and watch our dear Dora for a week while we were out of town. He kept us in the loop throughout the stay and was a great guest and dog sitter.”

“Emmy was great! Our little anxious pups felt at ease with her right away, which really helped us relax and not worry about them while we were out of town. We'll definitely use Emmy again!”

“Returned home after a weekend away to two very happy, well cared for dogs. Celine provides multiple updates per day, sending cute pics and videos of our pups playing. Very grateful for Céline!”

“Kari did a wonderful job caring for our dog, Butters! She took care of his medical needs and was very good at communication, providing us routine updates and photos. She also left the house clean, which was greatly appreciated. We would be happy to have Kari back to help us out in the future and highly recommend her!”

“Brooklynn was wonderful with our dog Otto! She sent us frequent updates and photos, took him for fun adventures, and made sure he was happy and safe while we were away for the weekend. She left our house spotless too! We would definitely love to have Brooklynn spend time with Otto again. Thank you, Brooklynn!”

“Emily was great with our 3 dogs, fish, and bearded dragon while we were away for two weeks! I felt at ease the entirety of our trip with her watching our animals. She kept us updated with pictures and was available if we needed to contact her. I wouldn't hesitate to book with her again”

“Wow is all that we can say! Amazing experience! Nishat truly went above and beyond for our 12 week old puppy and not only took great care of him but also took great care of our house while we were away for a week. Our puppy had to take different medications and had many needs that we were nervous about but Nishat put our minds to ease and met all his needs and I was amazed at her knowledge, care and treatment of our puppy and our place like they were her own. She sent us updates every day to let us know how he was doing and it was so clear to us that he was in good hands, which allowed us to relax and enjoy our time away. She was so responsive and present and it was by far our best experience on Rover. I really can’t recommend Nishat enough for anyone looking for a sitter. We would not hesitate to hire her again. There’s no one else I would rather have watch my baby. She’s the best! Thank you so much Nishat we appreciate you!”

“Molly did a great job with our fur kids. She's a great communicator and met all of our dogs' medical needs. We really appreciated the updates she provided. We highly recommend Molly's services and hope to use her again for future opportunities!”

“This was my first experience with Sparrow and I was delighted to see how happy my cat Rasmo was to be in their tender and attentivecare. Sparrow sent lots of updates and was very responsive to my questions. I also received lots of photos showing Rasmo snuggled up and relaxed, which really helped to put my mind at ease while I was away. I would hire Sparrow back anytime!”

“Kayla is amazing! She did such a great job taking care of my stubborn dog and was very respectful of my home while staying there! She sent lots of pictures and updates and did great with his heath issues! I would recommend Kayla for anyone looking for a trusting companion for their pets. I hope Kayla will be available for Bronx’s needs in the future because I would book her again in a heartbeat!”

About: I have always loved both dogs and cats since I was a kid! I have been around dogs since I was little and I live with a cat now! I would adore taking your furry friend for a walk or checking up on your cat when you are away. I am currently trying to fit dog walking into my schedule in the mornings before my job starts (STARTING IN MAY). I can also check up on your furry friend in the evening. I am also building my online business so days I am not at my other job are more flexible! I am very good at directions and pay attention to details. I will follow the directions left by the owners when doing a check in! I listen to the pet, and if they are not so sure of me, I let them come to me (especially with cats!) And of course there will be lots of pets!
“Jackie was awesome. She was flexible and fully attentive to my injured little guy. She dealt with a relatively complicated medication regiment that I sprang on her somewhat last minute. When I got back Theo was happy and noticeably healthier. On top of that she was communicative and easy going.”

“Jay took good care of Iris while I was away over the holidays. I had requested daily communication, and Jay sent a picture or comment every day. When I had questions, Jay responded immediately. Iris was clearly well cared-for, and her coat has never looked better, thanks to Jay's grooming. Jay left the house clean and organized. We had travel interruptions and were unable to fly home as planned, and Jay helpfully agreed to stay on longer than planned.”

Beyond belly rubs and feeding schedules, a house sitter’s presence may provide an additional layer of security for your home. However, you will need to arrange overnight stays and other household tasks with your sitter when reaching out to them. Not all sitters offer the same services. Common household tasks you can negotiate include:
- Mail & deliveries: Collecting letters and packages so they don't pile up.
- Plant care: Keeping your indoor or outdoor garden hydrated.
- Trash & recycling: Taking trash cans to the curb on scheduled pickup days.
- Home security: Sitters can stay overnight to keep your home occupied.
The best way to align on expectations is during your free Meet & Greet. Use this time to provide a "home cheat sheet" that includes your preferred South Portland walking routes, the location of your favorite pet store, and any specific quirks about your home’s security or appliances.
It’s helpful to think of house sitting as a "home base" service. Most sitters in South Portland maintain their normal daily routines, like running errands or heading to the office, meaning your pet should be comfortable being alone for a few hours at a time. If your pet needs a little extra company, here is how to find the perfect match:
- Look for "WFH" sitters: Many sitters mention "Work from Home" on their profile to indicate they’ll be present for the majority of the day.
- Update your pet’s profile: Write down how long your pet can comfortably be left alone. This helps sitters quickly determine if their schedule aligns with your needs.
- Communicate 24/7 needs: Standard house sitting usually doesn't include constant supervision. If your pet requires round-the-clock care, be sure to discuss this upfront.
Tip: Use the Meet & Greet to confirm a sitter's typical "away" windows. Transparency ensures your pet stays happy and your sitter can plan their day effectively!
Key handling is entirely up to you and your sitter to agree on during the Meet & Greet or in the Rover app. Most pet parents in South Portland choose to hand over a spare key or digital fob in person, while others arrange a lockbox or unique access code. Don't forget to discuss key returns as well!
The Rover Guarantee is Rover’s commitment to your peace of mind every time you book. It includes 24/7 customer support, sitter access to advice from qualified veterinary professionals for diagnostic issues, and a reimbursement program for eligible veterinary care in the rare event something goes wrong.
All bookings are backed by the Rover Guarantee , which provides up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care reimbursement.
Every sitter on Rover is required to pass a background check before listing their services. This process confirms their identity and indicates they are not on the Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Public Website or have any disqualifying offenses.
Beyond ID checks, you can review each sitter's star rating, read verified reviews from other pet parents, and see how many repeat clients they have. Every booking is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care. For more details, visit Rover's Trust & Safety page .
If a health concern arises during a stay, your sitter is instructed to contact you and our Trust & Safety team immediately and, if needed, take your pet to the closest veterinarian. Through our Trust & Safety support team, sitters can ask for diagnostic advice from a qualified veterinary professional if your pet is showing signs of possible illness.
For extra peace of mind, you can also prepare an authorization form for your regular vet. An authorization form outlines your preferred method of care and allows your sitter to bring your pet into their regular clinic.
Every qualified booking made on Rover is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes reimbursement for eligible emergency vet care.
A Meet & Greet is a short introductory meeting between you, your pet, and a sitter. It can take place in person or virtually, although we recommend in-person so that your pet can get to know your sitter or the new environment. During the Meet & Greet, you will have a chance to walk through your pet's routine, medical needs, and unique quirks. Take the time to ask your sitter questions about their skills and expertise, and make sure the fit feels right for everyone. Most pet parents and sitters on Rover welcome Meet & Greets because the process can give confidence and peace of mind for service experiences, especially for longer stays or first-time bookings.
Sitters on Rover set their own cancellation policy, which you can find on their profile under their calendar availability.
Cancelling before a booking begins and before the sitter's cutoff time qualifies you for a full refund. Same-day cancellations for walks, day care, and drop-ins follow the full refund policy. Otherwise, for dog boarding and house sitting, you will receive a 50% refund for the first seven days of the booking and a 100% refund for the remaining days when you cancel the same day a booking should begin.
If your sitter needs to cancel within seven days of the booking's start date, then our reservation protection will kick in. This means our support team works with you to find a replacement sitter.
