I was in need of 'in my home' doggy care three consecutive times within a two month span and didn't really want to "train" multiple sitters. Brianna was able to take the first and third times but offered to show her college age sister how to take care of Lacie. Sister Alyssa took good care of Lacie most recently. Thank you so much for caring for my spoiled fur baby!

Alisha is the best! We were looking for someone very last minute and she happened to be available. Not only did she make a meet and greet happen right away. I was at ease as soon as I met her. Such a sweet person. She took notes and genuinely cared about the pets needa. She stayed with our 2 dogs, cat, and gecko while we were gone for 4 days. She sent regular updates and communicated really well. We came home to a spotless home, a nice note, and very happy pets. I can’t say enough good things about this experience. She is wonderful and 100% recommend her. Unless I need her then back off she’s mine :)

We couldn't have asked for a better pet sitter! Our dog was hospitalized for pneumonia the week before our trip, which made us quite nervous about leaving on a long vacation. Fortunately, Hailey made us feel completely comfortable before we left - she was confident she could care for our sick pup and it showed. Hailey seamlessly handled our dog's complicated medication schedule and provided tons of extra cuddles to help with her recovery. We were able to enjoy our trip stress-free because we knew our dog was in such capable, loving hands. Throughout our time away, Hailey kept us well-updated on our pup's recovery and sent lots of pictures of our pets cuddled up with her. These photos were everything - they showed us that our fur babies were not just being cared for, but were genuinely happy and comfortable. We had booked Hailey before for a shorter trip and were thrilled we chose her again for this longer stay. She's reliable, trustworthy, and genuinely loves our pets like her own. The peace of mind she provides is invaluable, especially when dealing with a pet's medical needs. We will definitely reach out to Hailey in the future!

Probably the best dogsitter we’ve ever had, and we’ve used many to help care for our four rescue dogs. Ashlee was communicative and responsive the entire stay and made sure she followed through on the commitment despite some tough things going on for her. Any other sitter would’ve canceled, but not Ashlee. She even agreed to meet our dogs twice beforehand so everyone felt comfortable. She is amazing with our otherwise stranger-wary Chihuahuas—they love her calm, kind energy. Dogs just know! We could put our minds at ease knowing Ashlee was with our babies. Highly recommend.

Devin did an amazing job house sitting and taking care of our puppy for several days while we were out of town. He was very communicative and respectful throughout the entire time. We really appreciated the pictures he sent us, which helped us feel at ease. Devin even went the extra mile by cleaning the sheets and towels before leaving and ran our dishwasher. Highly recommend his services!

Courtney did a fantastic job with our two German Shepherds and cat. From our first meeting, I could tell Courtney has a love for animals and truly has their best interests in mind. This was our first time working with Courtney and we were gone for a whole week. Courtney sent us pictures throughout the day, updated us on how our pets were doing, and carefully cared for them as if they were her own. One of our dogs is aging and has difficulty walking, especially in the heat. Courtney provided him excellent care and monitored his health through the excessive heat warnings and storms. In addition, our home was kept in great condition while we were away. There is nothing better than walking into your home after a week away to find a clean house and happy, safe pets! I recommend Courtney to anyone looking for a pet/house sitter! We have already rebooked with her for our next trip!

Quinn was absolutely amazing with our pups! We had a last minute trip that required someone to stay with our dogs at our house for 7 days and Quinn went over and beyond. She took our dogs to the apartment dog park daily and played with them for hours. Would recommend Quinn to anyone needing a loyal pet sitter who will treat your animals like her own. When we returned she washed all the bed sheets and tidy up the house so we returned to a clean home.

Ly did a great job watching my pets will I was out of town. It’s always great when a pet sitter sends pics and updates without me having to ask for them! She asked all the right questions about how to best care for my pets which I appreciated. I had little to no cell service the entire time and was a peace knowing they were in the best hands! My dog being a silly golden retriever decided to roll around in the dirt while on a walk, she gave him a full bath and cleaned him up. She doesn’t take short cuts when watching pets which seems rare to find! Highly recommend.

Great communication and daily photos/videos. This was our first time leaving our dog, so she didn't eat for the first day we were gone. We collaborated on some problem solving, and she decided she could eat again with the help of some peanut butter. House was well cared for, as well.

Amiree was an amazing pet sitter for two weeks at our home. Our dog is a bit neurotic (and probably was a bit more than she bargained for) but Amiree was kind and understanding, and tried to keep her routine as close as normal - despite thunderstorms making everything infinitely more difficult. She gave twice daily updates with pictures and left our home exactly as she found it. We would highly recommend her to anyone looking for an overnight pet sitter.

We are beyond grateful for Olivia! She took such amazing care of our cat, Mochi, and truly went above and beyond. Her communication was wonderful, she sent frequent photo updates that made us smile every time, and it was so reassuring to see how happy and relaxed Mochi looked with her. When a snowstorm hit, Olivia even stayed overnight to make sure he was safe and could be fed! We felt completely at ease on our trip knowing Mochi was in such loving, capable hands. FAQs for House Sitting - Ames

Frequently asked questions about Rover

The average cost for House Sitting in Ames on Rover is $33.3 per night (as of August 2026). However, all sitters set their own rates based on experience, location, and availability.

Rover makes budgeting the cost of House Sitting easy. As long as your dates and pet profiles are correct, the price you see before you book is the same price you pay for House Sitting. For more information on service fees, click here .

As of August 2026, there are 575 sitters on Rover offering House Sitting across Ames. Enter your ZIP code to see which available sitters are closest to your home.

Beyond belly rubs and feeding schedules, a house sitter’s presence may provide an additional layer of security for your home. However, you will need to arrange overnight stays and other household tasks with your sitter when reaching out to them. Not all sitters offer the same services. Common household tasks you can negotiate include:

  • Mail & deliveries: Collecting letters and packages so they don't pile up.
  • Plant care: Keeping your indoor or outdoor garden hydrated.
  • Trash & recycling: Taking trash cans to the curb on scheduled pickup days.
  • Home security: Sitters can stay overnight to keep your home occupied.

The best way to align on expectations is during your free Meet & Greet. Use this time to provide a "home cheat sheet" that includes your preferred Ames walking routes, the location of your favorite pet store, and any specific quirks about your home’s security or appliances.

It’s helpful to think of house sitting as a "home base" service. Most sitters in Ames maintain their normal daily routines, like running errands or heading to the office, meaning your pet should be comfortable being alone for a few hours at a time. If your pet needs a little extra company, here is how to find the perfect match:

  • Look for "WFH" sitters: Many sitters mention "Work from Home" on their profile to indicate they’ll be present for the majority of the day.
  • Update your pet’s profile: Write down how long your pet can comfortably be left alone. This helps sitters quickly determine if their schedule aligns with your needs.
  • Communicate 24/7 needs: Standard house sitting usually doesn't include constant supervision. If your pet requires round-the-clock care, be sure to discuss this upfront.

Tip: Use the Meet & Greet to confirm a sitter's typical "away" windows. Transparency ensures your pet stays happy and your sitter can plan their day effectively!

Key handling is entirely up to you and your sitter to agree on during the Meet & Greet or in the Rover app. Most pet parents in Ames choose to hand over a spare key or digital fob in person, while others arrange a lockbox or unique access code. Don't forget to discuss key returns as well!

The Rover Guarantee is Rover’s commitment to your peace of mind every time you book. It includes 24/7 customer support, sitter access to advice from qualified veterinary professionals for diagnostic issues, and a reimbursement program for eligible veterinary care in the rare event something goes wrong.

All bookings are backed by the Rover Guarantee , which provides up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care reimbursement.

Every sitter on Rover is required to pass a background check before listing their services. This process confirms their identity and indicates they are not on the Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Public Website or have any disqualifying offenses.

Beyond ID checks, you can review each sitter's star rating, read verified reviews from other pet parents, and see how many repeat clients they have. Every booking is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care. For more details, visit Rover's Trust & Safety page .

If a health concern arises during a stay, your sitter is instructed to contact you and our Trust & Safety team immediately and, if needed, take your pet to the closest veterinarian. Through our Trust & Safety support team, sitters can ask for diagnostic advice from a qualified veterinary professional if your pet is showing signs of possible illness.

For extra peace of mind, you can also prepare an authorization form for your regular vet. An authorization form outlines your preferred method of care and allows your sitter to bring your pet into their regular clinic.

Every qualified booking made on Rover is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes reimbursement for eligible emergency vet care.

A Meet & Greet is a short introductory meeting between you, your pet, and a sitter. It can take place in person or virtually, although we recommend in-person so that your pet can get to know your sitter or the new environment. During the Meet & Greet, you will have a chance to walk through your pet's routine, medical needs, and unique quirks. Take the time to ask your sitter questions about their skills and expertise, and make sure the fit feels right for everyone. Most pet parents and sitters on Rover welcome Meet & Greets because the process can give confidence and peace of mind for service experiences, especially for longer stays or first-time bookings.

Sitters on Rover set their own cancellation policy, which you can find on their profile under their calendar availability.

Cancelling before a booking begins and before the sitter's cutoff time qualifies you for a full refund. Same-day cancellations for walks, day care, and drop-ins follow the full refund policy. Otherwise, for dog boarding and house sitting, you will receive a 50% refund for the first seven days of the booking and a 100% refund for the remaining days when you cancel the same day a booking should begin.

If your sitter needs to cancel within seven days of the booking's start date, then our reservation protection will kick in. This means our support team works with you to find a replacement sitter.

Yes, you can find sitters who have experience with handling special pet needs in Ames. On Rover:

  • 89% of sitters can help with special care needs
  • 98% can help with giving oral medications or injections
  • 91% can help with daily exercise

You can also find pet sitters on Rover who accept only one pet at a time, which is ideal for anxious puppies, kittens, or senior pets who move at a gentler pace. Some sitters will also list availability for 24/7 care, also known as constant care, in their profiles.

Use the search filters to narrow down sitters whose specific experience or environment meets your pet's needs. When reaching out to your sitter, outline your pet's care routine and use the Meet & Greet to walk your sitter through your expectations.
