About: Over the years, my family and I have fostered more than 15 dogs from local shelters, ranging from puppies to adult dogs and with very different personalities and needs. Many of our foster dogs came to us immediately after being spayed or neutered, so I’m comfortable following post-procedure care instructions, keeping dogs calm and comfortable, monitoring their activity, and giving them the extra attention they need while recovering. One particularly memorable foster was a small Chihuahua mother who had been abandoned on the street shortly after giving birth to three puppies. We cared for her and all four puppies while they grew stronger and prepared for adoption. We have also fostered several dogs who arrived extremely frightened and unsure of their surroundings. Some were initially afraid even to go outside for a walk. With patience, consistency, gentle encouragement, and time, we helped them become much more comfortable, confident, and able to enjoy normal daily routines. Those experiences taught me that every dog is different. I try to understand each dog’s personality, respect their comfort level, and give them the combination of structure, patience, affection, and attention that works best for them. I work from home and am home for most of the day, so pet care fits very naturally into my daily routine. Our own dog is already part of our everyday life, and guest dogs receive plenty of attention and companionship throughout the day rather than being left alone for long periods. My home-based schedule is flexible, which makes it easy for me to follow each dog’s normal routine as closely as possible, including feeding times, potty breaks, walks, playtime, naps and any other habits that help them feel comfortable. I know from our years of fostering that consistency and patience can make a big difference when a dog is adjusting to a new environment. Living in Summerlin, I’m also very mindful of the Las Vegas heat. Walks and outdoor activities are planned during comfortable times of the day and adapted to each dog’s age, energy level and individual needs. I want every dog staying with us to feel safe, comfortable and part of the family. I follow each owner’s instructions closely, including feeding schedules, walks, sleeping arrangements, medications or special routines, and I take time to learn about each dog’s personality, habits and any fears or sensitivities before their stay. We have our own small dog, so introductions are always gradual and supervised. From our foster experience, I know that some dogs are immediately social while others need more time and personal space. If a guest needs a quiet place to relax or some separation, I am happy to accommodate that rather than forcing interaction. Our backyard is fully fenced but we do not have a doggy door, so every outdoor break, play session or potty break is supervised. Because I work from home, dogs have plenty of companionship and supervision throughout the day. I also pay close attention to each dog’s age, energy level and comfort, especially during the Las Vegas heat. Most importantly, I try to care for each dog the way their family would—keeping their routine familiar, giving them plenty of attention, and making our home a calm and comfortable place while their owners are away.
