“We are so grateful for Savannah! We are new to the area and needed to travel. Savannah set up a meet and greet and immediately got on the ground and have our senior pup lots of love and pets. Our dogs health took a turn with major mobility issues just before Savannah's stay and Savannah didn’t hesitate. She stayed by her side and treated her with comfort and care even in really difficult situations. She communicated with me regularly and sent pictures. The house was exactly as we had left it when we returned. She definitely gets 5 stars!”

“Gina did such a great job taking care of the place and making sure I had regular updates and photos throughout my trip. It meant a lot to have that peace of mind. She is truly an animal lover and I am so glad I found her! Definitely would recommend. Excellent job!”

“Kyline was fantastic for our house and kitty. Super upfront about work schedule. She sent us numerous photos and updates with and without prompting. Left the house clean, and took care of everything we asked. Highly recommend.”

“Rosemary was incredibly accommodating, receptive, followed instructions well, and ensured our dogs were safe and happy. I would highly recommend her and would book again. Thank you for your great care!”

About: I'm retired, and thus very flexible. I'm quite reliable and dependable. My girlfriend and I live in a historic house near downtown Petaluma. I go for a nice long walk/run most days, and would love to have your dog keep me company! I've had cats or dogs throughout most of my life, and love both. I'm mostly retired, so I'm very flexible about scheduling. Ideally my assignments are in the morning or evening, leaving the middle of the day free for kayaking, bicycling, playing music, or just relaxing. Obviously, it's a lot of trust to put in a stranger from the internet to come into your house while you're gone. Whether it's talking on the phone, meeting in person, being Facebook friends, I'll do my best to help you know I'm not a scammer or a robber.
“Blake was incredible. She is friendly and made fast friends with my fur babies. They absolutely loved her! Even the cat! She was so responsive and really put my mind at ease. We’re in the middle of a move and had to go out of town at the same time. I have complete trust I. Her and was so impressed with how she took everything in stride and asked all the right questions. I will definitely continue to use her. Outstanding service.”

“Erik was awesome. He took care of my energetic dog Cashew in my apartment for 2.5 weeks, and it went super well. He sent photos and videos every couple days, with updates to let me know how it was going. Cashew seemed to love him. I would 100% recommend Erik!”

About: My experience ranges from daily care routines to addressing specific health and behavioral issues. I've always had pets of my own, which has further enriched my knowledge and passion for animal care. I am currently working part-time from home. I am available weekdays weekends, and I have the availability for playtime and walks for your pet's , I wanted to share that I have a fenced yard on half an acre, providing plenty of space for pets to play. Additionally, my friendly dog will be there for your fur babies to enjoy some playtime

About: I’ve worked with both kittens and puppies, so I understand the extra patience, attention, and care young pets need. I also have experience with both big and small dogs, which helps me adapt to different personalities, energy levels, and routines. I focus on making pets feel safe, comfortable, and loved while their owners are away. Pet care fits well into my schedule because I’m available every day after 3 PM once school is over, and I’m free on weekends. During the summer and school breaks, I have a much more flexible schedule and am available throughout the day. This allows me to give pets plenty of attention, playtime, walks, and consistent care. I care for pets directly in my client’s home to help them stay comfortable in their familiar environment and keep their normal routine. I follow any specific instructions provided, including feeding schedules, walk times, medication needs, and preferred routines. I also make sure pets get plenty of attention, playtime, and affection so they feel safe and not lonely while their owners are away. I keep the home clean and respect the space by tidying up after feeding, walks, or any messes, and I always make sure the pet is secure before leaving.
“I recently had Madison house sit and pet sit for nearly two weeks, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. She took wonderful care of my cat, playing with him multiple times a day and regularly sending pictures so I always knew how he was doing. It's clear she genuinely loves animals. I came home to a happy, relaxed cat, just as I had left him. Madison was also incredibly responsive throughout the stay. Any time I had a question, she replied quickly and put my mind at ease. She also left the house in great shape, which I really appreciated. Leaving your pet with someone new can be a worrisome experience, but I never felt anxious once with Madison. I was completely at ease knowing my cat and home were in such capable, caring hands. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a trustworthy, attentive pet sitter, and I will absolutely be hiring her again without hesitation.”

“This is our first time using Rover to find someone to come into our home and take care of our pets. I like the reviews of Ryan and scheduled a meet and greet with him to make sure he would comfortable with staying at the house. My main concern was keeping the dog and cat separated since they don't get along. Ryan sent me updates of how things were going, which was reassuring. Joplin (dog) really liked Ryan and she doesn't like everyone. We came home from our trip and Joplin was very happy to see us. Joplin actually looked the next morning to see if Ryan was still in the spare room :-). I would definitely use Ryan again in the future.”

“Emma is amazing! We ended up leaving her with an injured dog that needed meds and additional treatment and a sick cat that had to be given pills daily. Her response was: No problem! Her experience as a vet tech was obvious. Upon return the house and our pets were very well taken care of. Thank you Emma!”

The median cost per night for house sitting in Haystack is $75
Pet parents share their Rover experiences - Haystack
Savannah was fantastic. I have a sweet little rescue dog who is fearful of people and Savannah won her over. She sent me photos showing me my happy pup and kept me updated throughout her stay. She was a very nice person to deal with as well. I will choose her again.
Mallory was a wonderful and caring sitter for our dog. She was warm and friendly from our first meeting and followed instructions well. Our dog had an upset stomach and vomited while she was sitting, but she was so nice to launder the soiled blanket, and wasn't phased at all. We got text updates while away, which was greatly appreciated. She really likes animals and it shows, and our dog made a new friend! I would definitely recommend Mallory, and I hope to hire her again.

I'm very impressed with the Sophia and the care she gave my pets while sitting. I will definitely be using her again. She watched over my cat Riley and my dog Lia. They both warmed up to her quickly. My dog does not normally do that. After the first night Lia warmed up to her and they became friends. Sophia always stayed in touch and sent plenty of photos for me to see how they were doing. She left my house clean and neat. I highly recomend Sophia to anyone who is looking for a conifdent, respectful, caring pet sitter.

Sherry was wonderful! My pup is not easy, yet Sherry was cool and calm and managed him in spite of all his rambunctiousness. She sent me daily photos, administered his meds, and kept him happily entertained and even tried teaching him some basic commands. My house was left in pristine condition. She was responsible, professional and caring. I highly recommend Sherry!

Alex went above and beyond in caring for our kitties! He played with our menace of a kitten to the point he was snuggling and sleepy (which is a large task) and had our incredibly timid cat eating consistently while we were gone. He sent thorough updates with adorable pictures and left our home in pristine condition. We couldn’t recommend Alex more for other pet owners and will be using his services in the future. He is communicative, thoughtful, follows directions explicitly, and we felt completely at ease with him caring for not only our cats but our home.

I cannot recommend Emelina enough! She recently took care of my dog and home while I was away, and I am so impressed with her services. From the start, she showed genuine care and quickly bonded with my dog, who can be shy around new people. The regular updates, photos, and messages put my mind completely at ease—her communication was exceptional. Not only did my dog look happy and relaxed in every picture, but my home was also beautifully maintained when I returned. It’s clear that Emelina truly loves animals and understands how much it matters to keep pet owners informed. I will definitely hire her again and recommend her to anyone looking for a trustworthy, attentive, and loving pet sitter!

Beyond belly rubs and feeding schedules, a house sitter’s presence may provide an additional layer of security for your home. However, you will need to arrange overnight stays and other household tasks with your sitter when reaching out to them. Not all sitters offer the same services. Common household tasks you can negotiate include:
- Mail & deliveries: Collecting letters and packages so they don't pile up.
- Plant care: Keeping your indoor or outdoor garden hydrated.
- Trash & recycling: Taking trash cans to the curb on scheduled pickup days.
- Home security: Sitters can stay overnight to keep your home occupied.
The best way to align on expectations is during your free Meet & Greet. Use this time to provide a "home cheat sheet" that includes your preferred Haystack walking routes, the location of your favorite pet store, and any specific quirks about your home’s security or appliances.
It’s helpful to think of house sitting as a "home base" service. Most sitters in Haystack maintain their normal daily routines, like running errands or heading to the office, meaning your pet should be comfortable being alone for a few hours at a time. If your pet needs a little extra company, here is how to find the perfect match:
- Look for "WFH" sitters: Many sitters mention "Work from Home" on their profile to indicate they’ll be present for the majority of the day.
- Update your pet’s profile: Write down how long your pet can comfortably be left alone. This helps sitters quickly determine if their schedule aligns with your needs.
- Communicate 24/7 needs: Standard house sitting usually doesn't include constant supervision. If your pet requires round-the-clock care, be sure to discuss this upfront.
Tip: Use the Meet & Greet to confirm a sitter's typical "away" windows. Transparency ensures your pet stays happy and your sitter can plan their day effectively!
Key handling is entirely up to you and your sitter to agree on during the Meet & Greet or in the Rover app. Most pet parents in Haystack choose to hand over a spare key or digital fob in person, while others arrange a lockbox or unique access code. Don't forget to discuss key returns as well!
The Rover Guarantee is Rover’s commitment to your peace of mind every time you book. It includes 24/7 customer support, sitter access to advice from qualified veterinary professionals for diagnostic issues, and a reimbursement program for eligible veterinary care in the rare event something goes wrong.
All bookings are backed by the Rover Guarantee , which provides up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care reimbursement.
Every sitter on Rover is required to pass a background check before listing their services. This process confirms their identity and indicates they are not on the Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Public Website or have any disqualifying offenses.
Beyond ID checks, you can review each sitter's star rating, read verified reviews from other pet parents, and see how many repeat clients they have. Every booking is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care. For more details, visit Rover's Trust & Safety page .
If a health concern arises during a stay, your sitter is instructed to contact you and our Trust & Safety team immediately and, if needed, take your pet to the closest veterinarian. Through our Trust & Safety support team, sitters can ask for diagnostic advice from a qualified veterinary professional if your pet is showing signs of possible illness.
For extra peace of mind, you can also prepare an authorization form for your regular vet. An authorization form outlines your preferred method of care and allows your sitter to bring your pet into their regular clinic.
Every qualified booking made on Rover is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes reimbursement for eligible emergency vet care.
A Meet & Greet is a short introductory meeting between you, your pet, and a sitter. It can take place in person or virtually, although we recommend in-person so that your pet can get to know your sitter or the new environment. During the Meet & Greet, you will have a chance to walk through your pet's routine, medical needs, and unique quirks. Take the time to ask your sitter questions about their skills and expertise, and make sure the fit feels right for everyone. Most pet parents and sitters on Rover welcome Meet & Greets because the process can give confidence and peace of mind for service experiences, especially for longer stays or first-time bookings.
Sitters on Rover set their own cancellation policy, which you can find on their profile under their calendar availability.
Cancelling before a booking begins and before the sitter's cutoff time qualifies you for a full refund. Same-day cancellations for walks, day care, and drop-ins follow the full refund policy. Otherwise, for dog boarding and house sitting, you will receive a 50% refund for the first seven days of the booking and a 100% refund for the remaining days when you cancel the same day a booking should begin.
If your sitter needs to cancel within seven days of the booking's start date, then our reservation protection will kick in. This means our support team works with you to find a replacement sitter.
