One day, when we were living in Tanzania, I stepped over our dog Alice while exiting our front door. "Mom, you hurt Alice's feelings by not greeting her when you stepped over her," Sophie said. For many years, living in Africa, Sophie developed a deep love for safari animals and our farm animals (cows, pigs, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, and ducks). Back in the U.S., one winter, Sophie had a dog walking appointment during a snowstorm. Power lines were down. She drove as close to the house as she could and then slogged through the snow on unplowed roads a few blocks to get to the house and walk her charge.
