Sophia went above and beyond while providing care to our three pups! We have two miniature dachshunds and a large mutt, she cared for them in our home for six nights and seven days. She visited them multiple times a day, fed them, walked them, and treated them like her own. She made us feel at ease while being away, she sent us multiple photos daily of our pups having so much fun! When we came home to a tidy house and the pups were well taken care of. 10/10 we will absolutely be booking her again and recommend her to others as well!

Avery responded to my booking request very quickly and we arranged for a meet and greet. She stayed with my four dogs, which included a 7 month old puppy who had surgery and needed to be confined. Since she has worked in a vet’s office, I felt very comfortable with her taking care of him during his recovery. Avery was very flexible, communicated well and the dogs were all happy when I returned. I would not hesitate to book Avery again. I am glad she will be in the area for a few more years.

Amelia was great with our gang of three. She was spot on with the notes we left for her, as my in-laws were also very impressed with her. She sent us pictures of them, as we felt comfortable being away those days. When we returned home, everything was nice and neat. There was no panic with the dog and cats, as we usually return home to find fiber lost from their coats. So, they must have been comfortable with them as well. We do know the night we came home; they kept looking at the front door to see if she was returning, again. We look forward to her home services again in the near future. Yes, we would recommend her.

About: I have had a dog for 8 years and have taken care of him. In addition, I have interacted with many different kinds of dogs and volunteer at the Roanoke and Montgomery County shelters. I currently attend college, but whenever I am home I take care of my dog. I take care of him daily, and I pay attention to his needs I walk my dog, feed him, give him water, play with him, brush him, clean and moisturize his paws, and make sure he is up to date on medications

About: I’ve had and been around pets my whole life and have experience with animals of all sizes. I have house-sat, dog walked, and done routine checking on pets for multiple years for friends and family. I also volunteer at the animal shelter to help animals in need I’m currently working part time and only work a few days a week so I am available almost all the time to check in and help out with animals. My long shifts also contain breaks so I can interact with animals throughout the day even while working. I don’t typically stay overnight for house sitting because of the larger time commitment, but if that is something you are interested in I am able to add a small overnight fee to give your animals the care they need. I know how to handle all kinds of pets in all kinds of sizes and I care for each animal as if it were my own. The safety and health of your animal is my top priority while they are under my care.

About: i’ve never lived a day of my life without a dog (literally)! I started dog sitting when I was 15 and have taken care of up to three dogs at a time with varying age ranges from puppy to senior. I’m able to administer medication to different dogs and cats daily. I think there’s no better companion than my own dogs and cat, so I promise I will take the best care of yours! I can easily accommodate most schedules with daily checks. I have classes from 8 AM to 12 PM, but I’m able to wake up early to take care of animals. A few days a week I work at a restaurant until around 10 PM, but I am happy to go check on them throughout the day and then later in the evening if preferred. I always make sure medication‘s are put away, as well as any thing on the ground that they could get into. I typically watch my own dogs while they eat to make sure they eat everything but also to prevent any conflicts with resource guarding. When I check on animals, I tend to always play with them outside a little bit if they are dogs, or if the pet is more afraid, I just sit with them and talk with them for a few minutes.

Our pups loved Sofia, so much that when she left after we got home the dogs jumped up on the sofa to look out the window wondering where she was going. She is great with instructions and our newly added rescue that was a little skittish. We were able to relax on our vacation knowing our pups were well taken care of. Thank you Sofia so much for your great service and loving our pets while we were away.

About: I've grown up in a multi-pet household and have always been surrounded by animals, so caring for pets has been a part of my everyday life. I genuinely enjoy spending time with animals and understand the importance of providing them with attentive, loving care. I'm a recent college graduate looking to earn some extra income to help pay off my student loans. I work full-time at the Corporate Research Center in Blacksburg, which means I'll be in the area consistently and can be a reliable, dependable sitter. Whether your pet needs walks, playtime, or simply someone to keep them company, I'll make sure they receive the same care and attention I give my own cats at home! I've grown up in a multi-pet household and have always been surrounded by animals, so caring for pets has been a part of my everyday life. I genuinely enjoy spending time with animals and understand the importance of providing them with attentive, loving care. I have experience with both cats and dogs. I volunteered at an animal shelter in my hometown, where I primarily walked dogs and helped care for them. I also grew up with a Labrador Retriever and helped care for her throughout her senior years, including assisting with walking, standing, and eating when she needed extra support. While I love dogs, I'm equally experienced with cats. Over the past 10 years, I've cared for five cats between my family's pets and my own, so I'm comfortable with a wide range of feline personalities and needs. I'm a recent college graduate looking to earn some extra income to help pay off my student loans. I work full-time at the Corporate Research Center in Blacksburg, which means I'll be in the area consistently and can be a reliable, dependable sitter. Whether your pet needs walks, playtime, medication, or simply someone to keep them company, I'll make sure they receive the same care and attention I give my own cats at home. I currently work full-time at the Corporate Research Center in Blacksburg, so I'm conveniently located to provide pet care throughout the day. I don't mind stopping by during my lunch break for walks, potty breaks, feedings, or check-ins when needed. I'm available for overnight stays any night of the week, as well as early morning and late afternoon walks or drop-in visits. My schedule is very flexible, and I'm happy to work with you to find a routine that best fits your pet's needs. My goal is to provide dependable, consistent care so you can have peace of mind while you're away. I currently live in a three-cat household, so my home isn't the best fit for boarding. However, I'm happy to provide attentive care in your home, where your pet can stay comfortable in their familiar environment. When caring for pets in a client's home, I always follow their routine as closely as possible, including feeding schedules, walks, playtime, medications (if needed), and any specific instructions. I make sure pets have fresh water, plenty of attention, and a safe, clean environment while you're away. I also treat every home with the utmost respect, keeping it clean and secure and providing regular updates with photos so you can have peace of mind. My goal is to make your pet feel comfortable, loved, and cared for until you return.

About: Over the past 16 years, I've cared for just about any animal you can imagine! A flying squirrel, a 15-foot python, dogs, cats, horses and more. I have my own pup of seven years and we absolutely love welcoming friends into our home. We live on a .4 acre lot in central Christiansburg and I have an incredibly flexible schedule so we're up for anything! Let me put your mind at ease as being away from your beloved pets is hard enough. I'll send multiple updates throughout the day and lots of pictures. Happy to care for any and all animals. I'm working full-time in ministry so I have lots of time throughout the day to care for your loved one and will be gone no more than a few hours per evening for bible studies and groups. I take my dog, Tonka, out 5-6 times per day minimum and we love to go on walks and be outdoors. I have a large field directly behind my home and live in a very pet-friendly area tucked off the main road so your pup will enjoy lots of safe and supervised outside time! I allow animals on the furniture and keep all choking hazards up high. My dog has a knack for finding even the smallest things to mess with so I have good practice with keeping a safe home.

FAQs for House Sitting - Merrimac

Frequently asked questions about Rover

The average cost for House Sitting in Merrimac on Rover is $38.17 per night (as of August 2026). However, all sitters set their own rates based on experience, location, and availability.

Rover makes budgeting the cost of House Sitting easy. As long as your dates and pet profiles are correct, the price you see before you book is the same price you pay for House Sitting. For more information on service fees, click here .

As of August 2026, there are 351 sitters on Rover offering House Sitting across Merrimac. Enter your ZIP code to see which available sitters are closest to your home.

Beyond belly rubs and feeding schedules, a house sitter’s presence may provide an additional layer of security for your home. However, you will need to arrange overnight stays and other household tasks with your sitter when reaching out to them. Not all sitters offer the same services. Common household tasks you can negotiate include:

  • Mail & deliveries: Collecting letters and packages so they don't pile up.
  • Plant care: Keeping your indoor or outdoor garden hydrated.
  • Trash & recycling: Taking trash cans to the curb on scheduled pickup days.
  • Home security: Sitters can stay overnight to keep your home occupied.

The best way to align on expectations is during your free Meet & Greet. Use this time to provide a "home cheat sheet" that includes your preferred Merrimac walking routes, the location of your favorite pet store, and any specific quirks about your home’s security or appliances.

It’s helpful to think of house sitting as a "home base" service. Most sitters in Merrimac maintain their normal daily routines, like running errands or heading to the office, meaning your pet should be comfortable being alone for a few hours at a time. If your pet needs a little extra company, here is how to find the perfect match:

  • Look for "WFH" sitters: Many sitters mention "Work from Home" on their profile to indicate they’ll be present for the majority of the day.
  • Update your pet’s profile: Write down how long your pet can comfortably be left alone. This helps sitters quickly determine if their schedule aligns with your needs.
  • Communicate 24/7 needs: Standard house sitting usually doesn't include constant supervision. If your pet requires round-the-clock care, be sure to discuss this upfront.

Tip: Use the Meet & Greet to confirm a sitter's typical "away" windows. Transparency ensures your pet stays happy and your sitter can plan their day effectively!

Key handling is entirely up to you and your sitter to agree on during the Meet & Greet or in the Rover app. Most pet parents in Merrimac choose to hand over a spare key or digital fob in person, while others arrange a lockbox or unique access code. Don't forget to discuss key returns as well!

The Rover Guarantee is Rover’s commitment to your peace of mind every time you book. It includes 24/7 customer support, sitter access to advice from qualified veterinary professionals for diagnostic issues, and a reimbursement program for eligible veterinary care in the rare event something goes wrong.

All bookings are backed by the Rover Guarantee , which provides up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care reimbursement.

Every sitter on Rover is required to pass a background check before listing their services. This process confirms their identity and indicates they are not on the Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Public Website or have any disqualifying offenses.

Beyond ID checks, you can review each sitter's star rating, read verified reviews from other pet parents, and see how many repeat clients they have. Every booking is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care. For more details, visit Rover's Trust & Safety page .

If a health concern arises during a stay, your sitter is instructed to contact you and our Trust & Safety team immediately and, if needed, take your pet to the closest veterinarian. Through our Trust & Safety support team, sitters can ask for diagnostic advice from a qualified veterinary professional if your pet is showing signs of possible illness.

For extra peace of mind, you can also prepare an authorization form for your regular vet. An authorization form outlines your preferred method of care and allows your sitter to bring your pet into their regular clinic.

Every qualified booking made on Rover is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes reimbursement for eligible emergency vet care.

A Meet & Greet is a short introductory meeting between you, your pet, and a sitter. It can take place in person or virtually, although we recommend in-person so that your pet can get to know your sitter or the new environment. During the Meet & Greet, you will have a chance to walk through your pet's routine, medical needs, and unique quirks. Take the time to ask your sitter questions about their skills and expertise, and make sure the fit feels right for everyone. Most pet parents and sitters on Rover welcome Meet & Greets because the process can give confidence and peace of mind for service experiences, especially for longer stays or first-time bookings.

Sitters on Rover set their own cancellation policy, which you can find on their profile under their calendar availability.

Cancelling before a booking begins and before the sitter's cutoff time qualifies you for a full refund. Same-day cancellations for walks, day care, and drop-ins follow the full refund policy. Otherwise, for dog boarding and house sitting, you will receive a 50% refund for the first seven days of the booking and a 100% refund for the remaining days when you cancel the same day a booking should begin.

If your sitter needs to cancel within seven days of the booking's start date, then our reservation protection will kick in. This means our support team works with you to find a replacement sitter.

Yes, you can find sitters who have experience with handling special pet needs in Merrimac. On Rover:

  • 100% of sitters can help with special care needs
  • 95% can help with giving oral medications or injections
  • 95% can help with daily exercise

You can also find pet sitters on Rover who accept only one pet at a time, which is ideal for anxious puppies, kittens, or senior pets who move at a gentler pace. Some sitters will also list availability for 24/7 care, also known as constant care, in their profiles.

Use the search filters to narrow down sitters whose specific experience or environment meets your pet's needs. When reaching out to your sitter, outline your pet's care routine and use the Meet & Greet to walk your sitter through your expectations.
