18. Brandon M.
About: My parent got us our first dog, a beagle pup, at age seven, and ever since I have felt a special connection with dogs. The first dog I adopted on my own was a close friends spaniel retriever mix that he could no longer care for because he was having his first child. That dog, Donnie, changed me and left his paw print on my heart forever, and because he had separation anxiety issues I really began to learn how to care for dogs on a deeper level. When he passed, I went on to adopt a pitbull lab mix named Koko, and around the same time I again helped a close friend by adopting his two blue nose pitbulls because he was having his first child and wasn’t capable of handling both duties. Bronx and Jeter were brothers from successive litters and got along until the younger, Bronx, finished growing and they developed food and toy issues that soon developed into a sad situation where they had to be separated for life. My mom and dad took on Jeter and I kept Bronx as Koko’s sister. They were best buddies and both became my best buddies, and they went everywhere with me, including up to the mountains for my snowboarding trips. They both tragically developed similar forms of cancer and died within six weeks of one another in 2020, both at the age of ten. Having them both pass so young and so quickly, one right after the other, was devastating for me and my parents. I began sitting for Jeter to help me cope and handle the loss, until spring came around and I felt it was time to help one of the many dogs stuck in our cities shelters, so I adopted a five year old female blue nose pitbull named Rainy. I picked Rainy because she seemed to really need help. She was a bit of a nervous wreck at first, unsure of anything and constantly searching off into the distance with her gaze, with her tail either flat or tucked. But once I got her home she began to open up to me, and I can still remember the first time she sat down with me and did a scent roll next to my leg, asking for some pets and love. It took her months to shed most of her nervousness and anxiety, and still retains a tiny bit to this day (she can’t stand the wind). Five years later and she is a totally different dog. When I got her she was underweight, so she even looks like a different dog now. I do have some experience caring for older dogs. Jeter lived to be 14, but he had a rough time during his final six months or so. He developed dementia and hearing loss, and it was particularly rough handling his episodes. It is not easy watching your family member endure such things, and it gave me added appreciation for how sacred our duty to care for dogs actually is, and what exactly we owe them for all that they do for us. I take this duty very seriously, and if I ever have the privilege of caring for your dog, for your family member, I will do so as if they were my own, and will always be kind and understanding, under any and all circumstances. I am currently between jobs and am available all summer, spring, and fall. I do take trips up to the mountains to snowboard and play around in the snow with my dog, so my schedule will change somewhat during winter. I have a good sized, well landscaped and cared for back yard with six foot cinderblock and mortar walls around the entire yard. I can sit or board your dog here as long as they get along with my dog. I have medium and large size crates if needed. I can do home visits to your house to play with and walk your dog.
