Sara was fantastic! We’ve never left our boy with someone other than family before so we were very anxious, but Sara quickly put our concerns to rest. She was extremely communicative and sent us a bunch of pics every day. I’m so glad we found her and will happily use her again in the future!!

I couldn’t have imagined a better sitter than Jess. She went above and beyond to care for our puppy and 2 cats. I received frequent updates and photos and reassurance that everything was going well. Our puppy wasn’t feeling well while we were away and Jess took such good care of her that I didn’t even have to worry. I recommend Jess for anyone that is looking for a caring, reliable and responsible sitter who will love your pet like her own.

About: I've had dogs all my life, the most recently i had a awesome miniature poodle who I was fortunate to love and care for 17 years, so I am familiar with the needs of senior dogs. My schedule is fairly open every day after about 9 or ten am. I'd like a regular opportunity, but one offs will be good as well I am available for pet sitting at the clients home, but due to younger kids I can accommodate pets at my home. Walking and feeding and playing is ideal

She was great to work with -- conscientious in her preparations, very communicative throughout the stay giving us updates multiple times each day . She was able to accomodate all of our dog's idiosyncracies. At the end of the weekend everyone was happy! Will definitely work with River again.

Thalia did an amazing job caring for our two girls while we were away. She house sat for us on two separate days and followed everything we had laid out - from their walking schedule to feeding them exactly how they’re used to. It was clear she took the time to make sure their routine stayed consistent. She was also very communicative, sending us photo updates during walks and even at naptime, which we really appreciated. Being away from your dogs can be stressful, but Thalia gave us real peace of mind knowing they were not only well cared for, but genuinely loved on while we were gone. We’d absolutely trust her with them again.

About: I'm a pet-loving mother of four with three children in college—and enjoying the wonderful pets I have met through this site. I have lived in Scotch Plains for almost 15 years. I watch several dogs regularly on a private basis and am excited to be part of the Rover community. I grew up with a beloved menagerie that included three cats, two beloved dachshunds and a poodle and have enjoyed watching a variety of dogs, including a bulldog, a French bulldog, a Bernese, a labradoodle, and, of course, mixed breeds. I love walking and daily yoga and look forward to helping your pets get the fresh air, activity and affection they need when you are working or otherwise busy. I am a freelance writer with a flexible schedule and have time for walks and visits before or after work and at lunchtime. Having raised a family, I know how important it is to have a pet sitter who is mature and reliable and understands how deeply you love your pets--and am honored to assist you in keeping them happy and healthy. While I would love to help every pet, I am petite, so my ideal sized pets are under 50 pounds. I am a freelance writer with a flexible schedule and my own car. I rise early every day, and I am often available on weekends. I am often available at lunch time to clients who need their dogs walked mid day. I am a mature, reliable and organized mother of four and will treat your beloved and adorable pet like a member of my own family.

About: I have grown up around dogs my whole life. My grandparents always had labs, and when I was 9 years old, my family got a boxer named Bailey. Since then, I have been actively involved in caring for dogs and understanding how much love, patience, and attention they need. As I got older, I began dog sitting for neighbors, family friends, and people they connected me with. I have experience with overnight stays both in my home and in the owner’s home, as well as feeding, walks, playtime, giving medication, and keeping pets comfortable while their owners are away. I have cared for dogs of all ages, from energetic puppies who need frequent potty breaks and help settling down, to senior dogs who need extra patience, comfort, and support. My own dog Bailey recently passed away after living with Canine Degenerative Myelopathy, which slowly caused her to lose control of her back legs. In her final months, I helped care for her by getting her into her wheelchair, lifting her when she needed help going to the bathroom or eating, cleaning up accidents, and doing everything I could to make sure she felt safe, loved, and comfortable. What sets me apart is that I truly see pets as family. I know caring for them is not just about feeding them or letting them outside. I love spending extra time playing with them, giving them pets, and making sure they feel loved and relaxed. Our pets spend so much of their day waiting for our attention, so I always try to make that time special for them. I will treat your pets like they are my own. Since losing Bailey, I am especially grateful for any opportunity to care for other animals and give them the same love, patience, and attention that I gave her. I am currently a rising junior at Emory University, majoring in Biology on the pre-physician assistant track. This summer, I am working part-time as a medical assistant, which gives me plenty of time to care for your pets. On days I am not working, I can provide frequent potty breaks, walks, playtime, and attention throughout the day. I can also provide overnight stays in your home. When caring for pets in a client’s home, I do my best to keep their routine as normal and comfortable as possible. I will carefully follow all instructions for feeding, walks, potty breaks, medication, crate routines, and any special care your pet needs. I make sure pets get more than just basic care. I love spending time playing with them, giving them attention, and making them feel safe and loved while you are away. I am also very respectful of your home and will clean up after your pet, properly dispose of any accidents, wipe muddy paws, and leave your home the way I found it. I am very observant and will pay attention to changes in behavior, eating habits, bathroom habits, or anything that seems unusual. I am happy to send updates and photos so you feel comfortable knowing your pet is safe and cared for like my own.

Trisha was absolutely the best! From the very first meet and greet, we knew she was going to take good care of our pups! Anyone who will sit on the floor to pet your do is ok in our book! She kept us informed daily on how they were doing and sent many photos & videos. She even did some vacuuming, washed the bedding she used and picked up the poop in the yard. Trisha will be our first choice anytime we are away. Our pups have requested her for the future too! ?

FAQs for House Sitting - Scotch Plains

Frequently asked questions about Rover

The average cost for House Sitting in Scotch Plains on Rover is $54.95 per night (as of June 2026). However, all sitters set their own rates based on experience, location, and availability.

Rover makes budgeting the cost of House Sitting easy. As long as your dates and pet profiles are correct, the price you see before you book is the same price you pay for House Sitting. For more information on service fees, click here .

As of June 2026, there are 17,962 sitters on Rover offering House Sitting across Scotch Plains. Enter your ZIP code to see which available sitters are closest to your home.

Beyond belly rubs and feeding schedules, a house sitter’s presence may provide an additional layer of security for your home. However, you will need to arrange overnight stays and other household tasks with your sitter when reaching out to them. Not all sitters offer the same services. Common household tasks you can negotiate include:

  • Mail & deliveries: Collecting letters and packages so they don't pile up.
  • Plant care: Keeping your indoor or outdoor garden hydrated.
  • Trash & recycling: Taking trash cans to the curb on scheduled pickup days.
  • Home security: Sitters can stay overnight to keep your home occupied.

The best way to align on expectations is during your free Meet & Greet. Use this time to provide a "home cheat sheet" that includes your preferred Scotch Plains walking routes, the location of your favorite pet store, and any specific quirks about your home’s security or appliances.

It’s helpful to think of house sitting as a "home base" service. Most sitters in Scotch Plains maintain their normal daily routines, like running errands or heading to the office, meaning your pet should be comfortable being alone for a few hours at a time. If your pet needs a little extra company, here is how to find the perfect match:

  • Look for "WFH" sitters: Many sitters mention "Work from Home" on their profile to indicate they’ll be present for the majority of the day.
  • Update your pet’s profile: Write down how long your pet can comfortably be left alone. This helps sitters quickly determine if their schedule aligns with your needs.
  • Communicate 24/7 needs: Standard house sitting usually doesn't include constant supervision. If your pet requires round-the-clock care, be sure to discuss this upfront.

Tip: Use the Meet & Greet to confirm a sitter's typical "away" windows. Transparency ensures your pet stays happy and your sitter can plan their day effectively!

Key handling is entirely up to you and your sitter to agree on during the Meet & Greet or in the Rover app. Most pet parents in Scotch Plains choose to hand over a spare key or digital fob in person, while others arrange a lockbox or unique access code. Don't forget to discuss key returns as well!

The Rover Guarantee is Rover’s commitment to your peace of mind every time you book. It includes 24/7 customer support, sitter access to advice from qualified veterinary professionals for diagnostic issues, and a reimbursement program for eligible veterinary care in the rare event something goes wrong.

All bookings are backed by the Rover Guarantee , which provides up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care reimbursement.

Every sitter on Rover is required to pass a background check before listing their services. This process confirms their identity and indicates they are not on the Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Public Website or have any disqualifying offenses.

Beyond ID checks, you can review each sitter's star rating, read verified reviews from other pet parents, and see how many repeat clients they have. Every booking is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care. For more details, visit Rover's Trust & Safety page .

If a health concern arises during a stay, your sitter is instructed to contact you and our Trust & Safety team immediately and, if needed, take your pet to the closest veterinarian. Through our Trust & Safety support team, sitters can ask for diagnostic advice from a qualified veterinary professional if your pet is showing signs of possible illness.

For extra peace of mind, you can also prepare an authorization form for your regular vet. An authorization form outlines your preferred method of care and allows your sitter to bring your pet into their regular clinic.

Every qualified booking made on Rover is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes reimbursement for eligible emergency vet care.

A Meet & Greet is a short introductory meeting between you, your pet, and a sitter. It can take place in person or virtually, although we recommend in-person so that your pet can get to know your sitter or the new environment. During the Meet & Greet, you will have a chance to walk through your pet's routine, medical needs, and unique quirks. Take the time to ask your sitter questions about their skills and expertise, and make sure the fit feels right for everyone. Most pet parents and sitters on Rover welcome Meet & Greets because the process can give confidence and peace of mind for service experiences, especially for longer stays or first-time bookings.

Sitters on Rover set their own cancellation policy, which you can find on their profile under their calendar availability.

Cancelling before a booking begins and before the sitter's cutoff time qualifies you for a full refund. Same-day cancellations for walks, day care, and drop-ins follow the full refund policy. Otherwise, for dog boarding and house sitting, you will receive a 50% refund for the first seven days of the booking and a 100% refund for the remaining days when you cancel the same day a booking should begin.

If your sitter needs to cancel within seven days of the booking's start date, then our reservation protection will kick in. This means our support team works with you to find a replacement sitter.

Yes, you can find sitters who have experience with handling special pet needs in Scotch Plains. On Rover:

  • 89% of sitters can help with special care needs
  • 93% can help with giving oral medications or injections
  • 97% can help with daily exercise

You can also find pet sitters on Rover who accept only one pet at a time, which is ideal for anxious puppies, kittens, or senior pets who move at a gentler pace. Some sitters will also list availability for 24/7 care, also known as constant care, in their profiles.

Use the search filters to narrow down sitters whose specific experience or environment meets your pet's needs. When reaching out to your sitter, outline your pet's care routine and use the Meet & Greet to walk your sitter through your expectations.
