With their charming flat faces and short statures, French Bulldogs have some specific needs when it comes to ideal napping haunts—which can make it tricky to find the right fit in a Frenchie dog bed.
According to French Bulldog breeder and genetic subject matter expert Danielle Harris, the ideal dog bed for a Frenchie will balance temperature requirements with comfort, support, and durability. Frenchies are one of the “brachycephalic” or flat-faced breeds, meaning they’re prone to respiratory issues—but they can also have painful back problems.
Because of this, a good Frenchie bed will keep your pup cool (and lessen the need for panting) and provide good support for their spine. Waterproof covers are a bonus for any accidents or drooling, and beds that can be machine washed are icing on the cake. Armed with Danielle Harris’s advice, we’ve rounded up our favorite dog beds for French Bulldogs.
All-Around Best Dog Bed for French Bulldogs: PetFusion Ultimate Orthopedic Dog Bed (Verified Review)
This orthopedic bed features a solid four-inch memory foam base that provides great support for spines, necks, and joints in general—qualities that Harris recommends. It’s relatively low to the ground, with an opening that makes it easy for Frenchies to get into. The exterior is made from polyester and cotton fibers and is water- and tear-resistant, while the cover is removable and machine-washable. We especially like the non-skid bottom for exuberant Frenchie play, and our testers gave it four happy paws up.
Key Features:
- Memory foam base helps relieve joint pain
- Water and tear-resistant cover
- Supportive bolsters use recycled “green” materials
- Removable and washable cover
To Consider:
- Not recommended for powerful chewers
Best for Burrowers: Best Friends by Sheri Deep Dish Donut Cuddler
The round shape of this donut-style dog bed makes it an ideal option for the French Bulldog who likes to curl up in a nest. Bolstered sides offer warmth, which is often welcomed by both very young and very senior senior Frenchies. The rear bolster measures 12 inches, while the shorter 9-inch front bolster provides support and a good pillow rest—especially nice for Frenchies who like to sleep with their head propped up to keep their airways open.
A water-resistant bottom comes in handy for occasional outdoor use, and we appreciate that the whole fuzzy thing is machine washable.
Key Features:
- Faux shag fur makes this bed especially cozy
- Made with pet-safe materials
- Machine washable
To Consider:
- Not proof against powerful chewers
Best Tent-Style Bed: Best Pet Supplies Fleece Tent
A lot of smaller breeds appreciate a good cave bed and the sense of security it offers—especially anxious Frenchies. This tent bed from Best Pet Supplies measures 19″ x 19″ x 19″ and provides a secure resting space for naps and people-watching. Like many of the best beds for Frenchies, it’s low to the ground and easy to get in and out of.
The linen is made from a soft poly-foam, and the exterior comes in a range of materials and colors. This bed is made for longevity and can be tossed into the washing machine without losing its shape.
Key Features:
- Offers security to anxious dogs
- The whole thing is machine-washable
- Anti-skid base keeps it in place
- Attractive corduroy or suede finishes available in a range of colors
- Affordable price
To Consider:
- This will not stand up to active chewers
Best Orthopedic Dog Bed for French Bulldogs: Friends Forever Orthopedic Lounge Bed
Bolstered orthopedic beds are a smart choice for Frenchies, since they help combat two of the breed’s most common ailments: breathing problems and spine problems.
Made with human-grade mattress foam, this orthopedic option offers support for achy joints, while poly-filled bolsters give your Frenchie a soft place to rest their head for easy breathing. An anti-tear cover and a no-skid bottom make the bed a strong choice for everyday roughhousing (looking at you, young Frenchies), and the water-resistant liner neatly sheds puppy accidents. The whole bed is machine washable and measures 20″ x 25″ x 5.5″ (but it’s available in larger sizes too).
Key Features:
- Relieves joint and arthritis pain
- Poly-filled bolsters add additional support and comfort
- The anti-tear cover is designed to last
- The cover is removable and machine-washable
Best Waterproof: Bedsure Waterproof Orthopedic Bed
Bolsters are a popular choice, but they’re not for every Frenchie. They tend to reflect warmth inward, which isn’t always welcome to pups prone to overheating, and they can add uncomfortable bulkiness in a crate.
We like the flat Bedsure as an affordable orthopedic option that works well for both crates and outdoor usage. A solid egg-crate memory foam base provides good support without being bulky, and waterproof fabric makes it usable on a patio or at a park. (Waterproof beds are also great for puppies still learning the finer points of potty training and seniors who have the occasional accident.)
The Bedsure features one side made of Sherpa and another of soft Oxford fabric, so you can choose the side most appropriate to your pup’s needs. (If your Frenchie is prone to running hot, the cool side can be used year-round.) The cover is removable and machine-washable.
Key Features:
- Low-bulk and ideal for crates and kennels
- Uses egg-crate memory foam to distribute weight
- All-season bed with two sides
- Removable cover is machine washable
To Consider:
- Not a chew-proof option
Best Bed for Seniors: Furhaven Orthopedic Cooling Bed
The Furhaven Orthopedic Cooling Bed is a cross between a contouring orthopedic pad and a gel cooling mat. While this is a good option for lots of pups, cooling can be especially important for Frenchies to help regulate their body temperature. While still providing all the cozy comfort of a traditional bed, the plush exterior covers a gel top that wicks heat away from your dog’s body. It also features fluffy bolsters for head, neck, and back support. The cover is removable and machine-washable.
Key Features:
- Soft and cozy plush exterior is machine-washable
- Features orthopedic contour fill and cooling gel pad
- Fluffy bolsters provide support
To Consider:
- Not ideal for chewers
Best Bed for Chewers and Puppies: Carhartt Firm Duck Dog Bed
The Carhartt Firm Duck Dog Bed is ideal for both chewers and puppies. Puppies tend to be pretty harsh on their beds, and chewers, well… chew. This bed is one of the most durable on the market and is sized well for Frenchies. The exterior duck canvas material has a broken-in feel and is machine washable. It’s simple to remove and features a tough zipper that’s well hidden to avoid attracting the attention of curious teeth. The polyester fiber interior is also 100% washable—handy for puppy accidents.
Key Features:
- Made with washable and durable canvas
- Polyester fiber interior is soft and pillowy, and 100% washable
- Stands up to moderate chewing
- Available in multiple sizes, including Frenchie-friendly
Best Bed for Hot Weather: Best Choice Elevated Dog Bed with Canopy
This elevated dog bed comes complete with a sun-blocking canopy and is a solid outdoor option for keeping your Frenchie cool. It’s raised eight inches off the ground to allow for good ventilation and features rubber stoppers on each of the legs to prevent slipping on both indoor and outdoor surfaces. While your Frenchie probably doesn’t need weight reinforcements, we like that the legs are made from tempered steel, which bodes well for durability over time.
We also appreciate that the bed is easy to set up and break down and includes a travel bag for dogs on the go.
Key Features:
- Elevation allows for ventilation and cooling
- Features rubber stoppers for skid-free napping
- Sturdy frame
- Comes with canopy and travel bag
- Available in multiple sizes
- A great chew-proof option!
