- Not a substitute for professional veterinary help.
Dealing with a Destructo-Pup? Whether you have a diggy Dachshund, a nonstop scratcher, or a constant chewer, you need a bed that can withstand some serious wear and tear. But finding a truly indestructible dog bed that holds up under rough treatment can be a challenge. And having to repeatedly replace beds that claim to be “indestructible” can be discouraging—not to mention a painful blow to your wallet.
We know the struggle—and the frustration—well. That’s why we enlisted the help of two veterinarians to weigh in on what makes a dog bed (nearly) indestructible. Though no bed is impervious to all dogs, with our experts’ help, we’ve found there’s usually a bed out there that can handle your particular dog’s distinct style of destruction.
It’s worth noting that while a durable bed is almost always a wise investment, destructive behavior that stems from anxiety may need additional tools to solve the problem, like a visit with the vet to rule out health problems or a talk with a professional trainer or animal behaviorist.

Our picks
Best Overall Indestructible Bed: K9 Ballistics Chew Proof Elevated Dog Bed
K9 Ballistics Elevated Dog Bed
Surrounded by a durable aluminum frame, this bed’s fabric is inaccessible to relentless chewers.
Typically, cot-style beds are your best bet against bed destroyers of all kinds. The taut fabric is secured within the bed’s metal frame, leaving no excess material for eager chompers to seize.
The K9 Ballistics Chew Proof Armored line features some of the toughest beds on the market. For dogs who have worked through every other bed, this elevated bed is designed to resist chewing, biting, scratching, digging, and nesting. It accomplishes this with an aluminum frame that resists damage and prevents dogs from getting at the edges of the fabric. The durable ripstop ballistic fabric stands up to diggers and scratchers alike.
Not only does this powerhouse of a bed resist relentless chompers, but it also keeps dirt, moisture, and hair at bay. If you’re concerned it won’t last more than a week with your chew-happy pooch, you’ll be happy to hear this reputable company also offers a 120-day “Chew Proof Armored Warranty.”
Features we like:
- Good for indoor and outdoor use
- Fabric can be easily spot cleaned
- Elevated design allows for airflow
- Ideal for indoor or outdoor use
Things to consider:
- Not the most comfortable bed for dogs who like to cuddle
Best for Crates: Dogbed4less Orthopedic Memory Foam Dog Bed
Some dogs want more cushioning than an elevated bed can provide. While this orthopedic dog bed isn’t advertised as “indestructible” per se, we—and thousands of reviewers—have found it often does the trick.
It works well as a stand-alone bed, but we think this Dogbed4less mattress can also make a fine bed for your dog’s crate. Four inches of gel-infused foam offer support, while the medium-weight denim cover is durable and fits tightly across the mattress, leaving little for chewers to work with. We’ve found it a good choice for diggers, scratchers, and general wear.
Our reviewer, a Rover sitter, found that both her own dogs and the Rover dogs she hosted were “obsessed” with this bed—especially with the microsuede cover.
Features we like:
- The outer cover is removable, machine-washable, and dryer-safe
- 100% cotton cover doesn’t accumulate hair and can be vacuumed
- The interior lining is waterproof
- Backup suede cover included (handy for times one is in the wash)
- Affordable option
Things to consider:
- Not as foolproof against chewing as an elevated dog bed
Best for Puppies: Orvis ToughChew ComfortFill-Eco Bolster Dog Bed
Orvis ToughChew ComfortFill-Eco Bolster Dog Bed
Puppies will appreciate this bed’s soft layer of micro-velvet and the cozy bolsters. Puppy parents will appreciate its sturdy construction and Orvis’s money-back ToughChew guarantee.
Ordinarily, we wouldn’t recommend such a pricey bed for puppies. After all, they’re not exactly known for being delicate with their belongings. That said, this Orvis bed has a lot of puppy appeal. First, Orvis has your back with their ToughChew guarantee: if your dog chews through the bed’s cover, they’ll refund your money with zero hassle.
The company maintains this bed is puncture-, tear-, and chew-resistant. The cover’s base layer is crafted with ripstop nylon and is topped with a soft layer of micro-velvet. Inside, a sturdy 840-denier nylon liner offers an additional layer of protection. Plus, the bed’s seams don’t have cording, which eliminates easy chew targets.
Aside from its sturdy construction, this bed also features cozy bolsters for comforting young pups. One side is left open for an accessible entry point for smaller puppies who struggle with high-sided beds.
Features we like:
- You have the option to personalize with up to 15 letters
- Completely machine washable (important for puppies still potty training)
- Low profile for easy access
- Springy cushion is ideal for diggers, burrowers, and nesters
Things to consider:
- Expensive option—but many consider it a long-term investment in their pet’s health
Best for Large Breeds: Big Barker Orthopedic Headrest Bed
“If you have a larger dog or one that is particularly strong, it’s very important to choose a bed that is designed with extra strength and durability,” says Dr. Ellen Russell, DVM. “For instance, orthopedic foam or memory foam beds are usually very sturdy and support the weight of larger dogs without breaking down.”
Big Barker is highly regarded for the quality of its construction and its guarantee against damage. This bed’s cover is made with tough microsuede fabric that scores 100,000+ on the Wzenbeek Abrasion test (a measure of a fabric’s ability to endure scratching and rubbing) and is a popular pick for diggers.
The thick foam’s weight distribution makes it a smart choice for extra-large dogs. It’s not cheap, but a ten-year warranty may soften the blow.
Our Rover tester noted that this bed was incredibly comfortable and popular with pups, but that buyers should be aware of how much floor space the extra large sizes require. It’s also important to note that the Big Barker is better suited for diggers than for chewers. (Chewers, read on!)
Features we like:
- Big Barker is the only bed clinically shown to improve joint health and mobility in big dogs
- The orthopedic foam should retain its shape for years
- Replacement covers are available
- Handmade in Pennsylvania
Things to consider:
- Takes up a lot of space
- Pricey option
Best for Chewers: Kuranda Chewproof Elevated Aluminum Bed
Kuranda Chewproof Elevated Aluminum Bed
It’s not the cushiest style available, but the Kuranda elevated dog bed is designed to withstand even the toughest chewers, making it a popular choice for veterinary clinics and shelters.
“Elevated beds with metal frames or durable PVC material can be a good option for dogs that tend to chew on their beds,” says Dr. Puri. “They provide less material to chew on and can be more resistant to damage.”
Enter the not-so-secret weapon in the war against chewing: Kuranda. Designed with unrepentant chewers in mind, this durable elevated dog bed is constructed with aircraft-grade aluminum support. The company’s patented design secures fabric within the bed’s frame to make it unreachable for chew-happy dogs. Plus, the heavy-duty vinyl is scratch-resistant and easy to clean.
There are lots of sizes and covers available, and all have a one-year warranty. These sturdy beds are used and loved by shelters and rescues, so you know they’re tough!
Features we like:
- Supports up to 250 pounds
- Covered by a one-year chew-proof warranty
- For indoor and outdoor use
Things to consider:
- Not the coziest bed for dogs who like a plush surface
Best for Diggers: K9 Ballistics Tough Rectangle Pillow Bed
K9 Ballistics Tough Rectangle Pillow Bed
A tough and fur-resistant canvas cover, tough zipper, and plush filling make this bed a terrific option for relentless diggers.
Relentless diggers, this one’s for you. This K9 Ballistics Pillow Bed is built to withstand digging, scratching, and general wear and tear. The bed’s cover is made from the company’s proprietary ripstop ballistic fabric. It also features a waterproof backing and a water-repellant finish on top. It’s certainly a tough bed, but it won’t fare as well with serious chewers.
The company offers a 90-day limited damage warranty for their dog bed covers (but not the bed itself), which they claim to be near-indestructible. Our Rover reviewer observed that the canvas cover felt more like a tent than a blanket, but that her dog still loved lying on it. Her pup regularly scratches at the bed but has yet to tear any holes, even after a month of use. Additional highlights include fabric that is virtually fur-repellant and a non-skid bottom.
Features we like:
- Removable, washable cover
- Fabric is water-, hair-, and dirt-resistant
- Many color options are available
- Made in the U.S.
Things to consider:
- Not for determined chewers
- A bit bulky
Best Outdoor: Carhartt Durable Canvas Dog Bed
Made by the same brand known for heavy-duty working clothes and hunting apparel, this nearly indestructible Carhartt bed can withstand years of wet paws, digging, and chomping (though we recommend keeping an eye on aggressive chewers).
This bed is made from durable cotton duck canvas, and its triple-stitch seams and brass zipper hold up in the washing machine. It’s also moisture-repellant and cleans easily, making it a suitable choice for lounging outdoors.
Our tester considered this bed a good size, yet it’s still lightweight and easy to move around.
Features we like:
- Good for indoor or outdoor use
- Cover has a nontoxic water-repellent coating
- The exterior shell is removable and washable
- The fluffy cushion has a cozy “broken-in” feel
- Zipper is concealed under zipper flap
Most Comfortable: PetFusion Ultimate Pet Bed
While it’s not certified indestructible, we’ve found this dog bed stands up well to pets that like to dig in their beds and have a nibble while they’re at it—a nice combination if you have an older dog who’s a moderate chewer and needs a soft place to rest.
This cozy dog bed checks a lot of boxes: It features a four-inch memory foam base for orthopedic support; it comes with a machine-washable, tear- and water-resistant cover; and it offers sturdy, almost fully enclosed bolstering support if you have a dog who likes a pillow.
Tried and tested by several Rover office dogs, the PetFusion was found to live up to the “Ultimate” in its name. Our human testers were impressed by the sturdy construction, and our doggy testers were pleased with the comfort this bed provided. They also noted that the open gap allows for easy access—a nice touch for older or arthritic dogs with limited mobility.
Features we like:
- Waterproof liner protects your investment
- Replacement covers available (in case your dog tears it)
- Plush bolster surround three sides of the bed
- Nonskid bottom
Things to consider:
- Really determined chewers could destroy this bed
Best Budget: Majestic Pet Suede Bagel Bed
You can pay a hefty premium for so-called “indestructible” beds. If you’re looking for something a little more affordable, this heavy-duty yet cozy bagel bed fits the bill. It features a base made with durable, water-resistant 300/600 denier fabric. And the cover is crafted from durable microsuede. The rounded shape is ideal for dogs who like to nest and burrow, and some pet parents have found it may contribute to a calmer and less-destructive pet.
Features we like:
- Filled with plush fiberfill to ensure the bed keeps its shape
- Easy to wash: the two smaller sizes are machine-washable, and the two larger sizes include a removable, washable slipcover
- Strong option for burrowers and dogs who like high bolstered sides
Things to consider
- May not offer the support older or arthritic dogs need
How We Chose
The dog beds featured here were selected based on a combination of our own hands-on testing, a comprehensive look at customer reviews, and interviews with two veterinarians. We prioritized beds with durable materials, thoughtful designs, and good warranties. We also considered the different types of bed destroyers out there, seeking a range of models to account for chewers, diggers, scratchers, burrowers, and nibblers.
As always, we’re guided by the experience of living and playing alongside our own much-loved and strongly opinionated pets, who are never stingy with their feedback.
