To see what pet parents are naming their dogs in 2024, we dug into Rover’s database of over a million pets and uncovered the most popular dogs names and biggest trends.

On Trend: ‘It Girl’ Names for Dogs Are So In
Pop culture consistently has a huge influence on pet names and this year is no exception.
Maybe she’s born with it—or maybe she’s a dog with an It Girl name. These trendsetting, of-the-moment icons include Taylor Swift (up 461%), Jisoo (up 361%), Jane Fonda (up 111%), Normani (up 61%), and Renee (Rapp, up 39%).
Vice President Kamala Harris isn’t the only one who had a brat summer. The dog name Brat is trending up 31% in popularity this year, along with singers Beyonce (up 28%) and Sabrina (Carpenter, up 7%).
New girl dog names on the It Girl trends list this year are Eilish and Dua Lipa. If you really must know about the others, we also updated our male dog names list this year too.
Will They or Won’t They?
Celebrity relationships are common tabloid fodder and these on again off again couples seem to have inspired dog parents this year.
Bradley Cooper is trending up 261% while Gigi (Hadid) is up less than 1%. Rosalia is up 91% followed by Jeremy (Allen White) at 26%. Renee (Rapp) is trending up 39% while Towa (Bird) is up 11%.
More pairings include:
- Selena is up 16% and Benny Blanco is up 11%. The name Benny Blanco From Tha Bronx appeared on the list for the first time.
- The name Justin Bieber is trending up 11% while Hailey (Bieber) is down -6%.
- Peregrine (Pearson) is up 11% while Sophie (Turner) trends down -7%.
- Barry (Keoghan) is up 11% and Sabrina is up 7%.
- Ariana (Grande) is trending down -20% while Ethan (6%) and Slater (3%) are trending slightly up.
- Finally, in honor of the end of their second era, Bennifer made the list for the first time.

In Memorial
Every year, we say goodbye to beloved celebrities. Dog parents honor their memory through these trending names.
In honor of pro wrestler Sid Vicious, the name Vicious is up 111%, while the name Sid Vicious is up 11%. Professional wrestling Hall of Famer Sika Anoa’i also passed away in 2024. The name Sika is up 11%.
Musicians have also inspired dog parents. Park (after K Pop sensation Park Bo Ram) is up 86%. And Shifty is up 11%, in memory of Shifty Shellshock, lead singer of Crazy Town.
Other trending names include:
- Chandler Bing is up 45%, in honor of the late actor, Matthew Perry.
- Wily is up 28% (after actor Taylor Wily).
- Lou Dog is up 24% (in memory of conservative talk show host and political commentator, Lou Dobbs).
- Shannon is trending up 11%, likely in honor of the late actress Shannon Doherty.
Blockbuster Pet Names in 2024
One of the big questions of 2024 was Deadpool or Wolverine? Dog parents have answered. Wolverine is up 5% and Deadpool is down -39%.
Dune 2 was one of the most anticipated movies of 2024, so it’s no surprise that dog names inspired by the classic novel are on the rise. Gurney is up 511%, Atreidies is up 361%, and Chani is up 73%. Feyd, Irulan, Rabban, and Thufir are all new to the list this year.
Beetlejuice returned to theaters this year. But don’t worry—you can say these dog names three times. Adam is up 36%, Barbara is up 24%, Wolf is up 23%, and Delores is up 11%. Astrid also made the list this year, up 3%.
New Beetlejuice-inspired names include Beetlejuice and Lydia Treetz (Deetz). Other 2024 films made the list for movie dog names include Odie, Gru, and Joker.
Bon Appétit! Food Dog Names Are Trending

Food-inspired dog names are a perennial favorite for pet parents, and 2024 is no different. Topping the trend this year there’s a three-way tie between Calzone, Chive, and Provolone—all are up 211% compared to last year.
Next up is a four-way tie between Poutine, Babybel, Pastrami, and Tempeh, all trending up 111%. Last but not least we have Tortilla (up 96%) and Cauliflower (up 91%).
Cilantro is down -68%, which could mean the name is as polarizing as the herb. On a semi-related note, the name Soap is down -39%.
Tinned fish is having a moment: Sardine is new to the list in 2024.

2024’s biggest rap beef was Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake. When it comes to dog names, Drake is down -2% while Kendrick is down -32%.
New to the list this year are Eilish, Dua Lipa, and Gangnam.
Aye-aye, Captain! Cartoon Dog Names Are Trending
Cartoon characters can inspire silliness and nostalgia, just like our furry family members. In the top spot is Plankton (up 361%) followed by Sandy Cheeks (up 311%), both of Spongebob Squarepants fame.
Next up are characters from Bluey: Judo (up 73%), Stripe (up 67%), Bluey herself (up 58%), and Pom Pom (up 40%). One of the famed step-brothers from Phineas and Ferb made the list: Ferb is up 36%. And last but not least is Filipino comic book character and demigod Zuma, up 16%.
New to the list this year, and following the Spongebob Squarepants trend, we saw Gary (even a “Gaaaaaaaaary”), Spongebob, and Squilliam Fancyson as dog names. Joining Ferb, the name Doofenshmirtz also made the list for the first time in 2024.
Not a cartoon fan? Anime dog names have also made their way up the name ladder with Cowboy Bebop and One Piece leading the show. We also can’t forget about Paw Patrol and Disney-inspired dog names, which kids have definitely had a say in.
Streaming Programs Continues to Score
Fans say Apple TV+ shows are flying under the radar but, based on these monikers, dogs on Rover disagree. It’s strongly rumored there will be a fourth season of Ted Lasso, so it’s no surprise that everyone’s favorite expat coach and his football club are still trending.

The Votes Are In: Pet Names Inspired by Politics
2024 is an election year, which means political-inspired names are on the rise. Commander is up 97%, Ballot is up 61%, Prez is up 45%, and Veto is up 27%. Local office names are also trending, including Mayor (17%) and Governor (16%). Finally, Senator, Mr. President, Yay, and Nay all tied at 11%.
Score! Athletes Inspire Iconic Dog Names
Athletics are another inspiration pet parents turn to when it’s time to name a new dog. Brunson is the top trending sports-related dog name in 2024, up 161%, which is fitting after Jalen Brunson reportedly took a hometown discount for the New York Knicks this offseason.
Coming in at number two is Wemby (after basketball star Victor Wembanyama), up 127%, followed by Witt (inspired by professional baseball shortstop Bobby Witt Jr.), up 111% to round out the top three.
In fourth comes Kelce, trending up 51%, in reference to brothers Travis and Jason who are famous on and off the field, for football, their podcast, and associations with Taylor Swift. Kelce is closely followed by Purdy, up 47%, after 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.
The last three athletes on the trends list this year are neck-and-neck: Bronny (after Lebron’s son and new addition to the LA Lakers, Bronny James), up 32%, Diggs (inspired by wide receiver Stefon Diggs), up 31%, and Messi (after international soccer star Lionel Messi), up 29%.
New dog names in the world of athletics on our list this year include SweetSimone, CaitlinClark, Shohei, Luka “Dogcic”, CeeDee, and Amon–Ra. CaitlinClark being on the list this year points to the WNBA’s rapid growth and potential to trend even more next year.
Gold Medal Dog Names
The 2024 Summer Olympics took Paris (and the world) by storm this summer. Dog names inspired by Olympians are trending.
Everyone’s favorite Olympic commentator, Snoop Dogg, brings home the gold this year trending up 38%. Fittingly, Silver takes second place, up 21%. And coming in with the bronze in dog name inspiration Henrick (Christiansen), up 20%. The Norwegian swimmer became known as The Muffin Man of the Olympics thanks to his viral devotion to the chocolate muffins served in the Olympic Village. In his honor, we’re thrilled to announce that Muffin Man is new to the list this year. Muffin is up 2%. Other muffin-themed names include Miss Muffin, Muffin Jr., and Mini Muffin.

Fashion-Forward Dog Names This Year
The fashion world is no stranger to feuds, and these dog names aren’t afraid to take sides. The name Saint Laurent is up 611%, while rival Karl Lagerfeld didn’t even make the list. Luxury brand Alaia is up 140%, along with Louis Vuitton and Bottega, both up 111%.
Christian Dior is up 61%, while iconic rival Coco Chanel isn’t trending at all. Burberry is trending up 42%, with Hermès nowhere to be seen. And last but not least, Versace and Gabbana are up 34% and 25%, respectively, beating out Armani to the top trending list.
New to the list this year is fashion icon Gianni Versace.

Next is the outgoing and friendly Labrador Retriever, whose most popular names are: Remington, Sully, Birdie, Ella, and Boone. The Goldendoodle is the third most popular breed and people love to name these energetic dogs Dolly, Chase, Cookie, Benny, and Honey.
The sweet, family-oriented Golden Retriever takes fourth in our most popular breeds list and are often named Mabel, Dixie, Maui, Ace, and Ruby. Last but not least is the intelligent, loyal German Shepherd, whose top trending names are Tucker, Willow, Dakota, Roxy, and Piper.
