The 90s and early 2000s are back in 2023 and this year’s trending dog names show it. You oughta know that the name Alanis (Morissette) is up 547%.
Some pet parents are spicing up their life by naming their dogs Ginger Spice, which is trending up 47%, and Spice Girl, which is new to the list this year. New to the list, and now forever in our hearts, are dogs named Leonardo Dogcaprio, Shania Twain, Richard Gere, Fergie, Shakira, and Avril.
The nostalgia trip extends beyond movies and music, as the name Furby is also up 27%.
90s celebrities: Heartthrobs and leading ladies
The 90s saw the rise of paparazzi and celebrity worship. Here are some of the highlights:
- 1995’s Sexiest Man Alive, Brad Pitt, is trending up 47%.
- The names Chad Michael Murray, and Freddie Prince appeared also on the list for dogs for the first time.
- Infamous 90s “it” girls Drew Barrymore (297%), Halle Berry (97%), and Winona [Ryder] (19%) are trending up for dogs.
90s Music: From Grunge and Hip Hop to Boy Bands and Pop Princesses
Flannel and grunge bands were an iconic part of the early 90s and we still see that influence in dog names today. Cornell is up 64% and Nirvana is up 56%. Dogs named Corgan after the Smashing Pumpkins frontman are also on the rise. Our favorite, though? There are dogs named Dave Growl on the list.
Yo MTV Raps may have started in the late 80s but this popular show ran through the mid-90s. Hip hop artists had a huge impact on the decade and pet parents clearly still love these artists. Tupac, Big Boi, Dre, Snoop, Missy, Biggie, and Pepa all made the list. Other dog parents like to kick it root down—Beastie and Adrock are on this list this year, too.
In the battle of the boy bands, who inspires more male dog names?
- NSYNC trends: Chris (23%), Joey (3%), Justin (-12%), Lance (-18%), and JC (-42%).
- Backstreet Boys trends: Kevin (4%), AJ (-6%), Howie (-6%), Nick (-13%), and Brian (-14%).
- Hanson is up 16%.
Pop divas are all over the list this year. Jessica is up 42%, Britney is up 11%, and Christina is down -30%. Other girl dogs names like Fergie, Shakira, and Avril also popped. Shania Twain appeared on the list for the first time. Pet parents are also spicing up their lives this year: Dogs named Ginger Spice are up 47% and Spice Girl is new to the list.
In alternative-inspired names, Bjork is up 31% and Alanis is up 547%. Honorable mention: There is a dog named Linkin Bark this year.
90s Television: Teen Dramas and Iconic Cartoons
Saved by the Bell was THE show to watch after school. So who at Bayside High inspires more dog names? Kelly Kapowski made the list for the first time this year. Of the main characters, the most popular dog name inspired by Saved by the Bell is Kelly, followed by Zack, Lisa, Slater, and Jessi. Screech is down -28%.
The most infamous zip code in 90s television continues to inspire pet parents today. Dogs named for Beverly Hills 90210 include Steve, Dylan, Kelly, Donna, David, Brandon, and Brenda. Donna Martin also made the list this year. Hopefully she graduates!
Saturday morning cartoons were a staple of many kids of the 90s who have grown up to be pet parents today.
- Stimpy is up 31% and Ren is down -7%.
- Pet parents love the Powerpuff Girls. Blossom is up 20%, Bubbles is up 9%, and Buttercup is up 6%.
- Turtle power! Pet parents pay homage to the heroes in the half-shell when it comes to dog names. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle-inspired names are all over the list. There are dogs named Michaelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, Master Splinter, and Shredder.

- Little Debbie is trending up 38% this year, along with Trix (28%), Twinkie (13%), and Zinger (9%). Fruit Loop (-2%), Pop Tart (-25%), Captain Crunch (-36%), and Ding Dong (-42%) are all trending down.
- The tastiest new names on this list are Gogurt, Dunkaroo, Frosted Flakes, Lunchables, Miss Hot Pocket, and Miss Twinkie.

Pet parents are nostalgic about the toys of their childhood. Furby is trending up 27%, Nerf is up 17%, Polly Pocket is up 14%, Beanie (as in Beanie Baby) is up 12%, and Elmo (possibly inspired by Tickle-Me-Elmo) is up 9%.

Sports-Inspired Dog Names Score Big
Americans love football-inspired names. Kelce is the #1 top-trending dog name in America (up 135%), likely inspired by the Kelce brothers, who faced off at last year’s Super Bowl. The oldest, Travis Kelce, is also dating Taylor Swift, which may be contributing to the trend.
The US Women’s National Team is gearing for a comeback and so are the dog names. Dunn (147%) and Megan (33%) are trending up while Rapinoe, along with her wife and WNBA icon Sue Bird, are new to the list. Other trending sports-inspired names in the arena this year include Celtic (364%), Trae (222%), Nikola (147%), Mariner (131%), Eagle (114%), Lamb (109%), and Fields (97%).
- The next LeBron James? Wemby, after Spurs player Victor Wembanyama, is new to the list this year.
- Other new names include Ekeler, Belt, Bonds, Jokic, Knick, Rapinoe, O’Hara, and Point.
- Pet parents must love Brittney Griner. Brittney is up 47% while Griner is new to the list this year.
- Breanna Stewart left the Seattle Storm for the New York Liberty in the last year, and there are a lot of Stewy fans out there. The dog name Stewy is trending up 81%.
- More in the WNBA: Jewell Lloyd has continued to make a name for herself on the Seattle Storm and dogs named Jewell are up 64%. The names Chelsea and Gray are also both trending up 14% each.
The US Women’s National Team may have left the World Cup earlier than their track record predicted, but women’s soccer fandom is only increasing. Dogs named Dunn (147%), Megan (33%), Lindsey (4%), Crystal (8%), Alyssa (7%), Trinity (4%), Sophia (3%), and Julie (2%) are all trending up.

Fans of the Addams Family came out of the woodwork in 2023, naming their pets after characters from the hit Netflix series Wednesday. The full name Wednesday Addams is trending up 297% for dogs, and just Wednesday (ranked #2 trending nationally) is up 92%.
Other trending names inspired by the streaming series include Nevermore Academy student Enid (up 217%) and Thing, the strangely charismatic severed hand (up 197%). Plus, the names Gomez Addams and Morticia Addams appeared on the list for the first time ever.
And Just Like That, Dog Names Inspired by the Sex and the City Reboot Are on the Rise
- Che is up 32%, Charlotte is up 6%, Carrie is up 2%, and Nya is up 1%.
- Viewers didn’t love Miranda’s storyline in the reboot, so it’s no surprise the name Miranda is down -30%. Also down? Aiden (-28%) and Big (-16%).
Here Come the Grannies! Bluey-Inspired Names Are Trending Up in 2023
The Heeler family has inspired pet parents all over America. Bluey is up 60%, Bingo is up 41%, Chili is up 19%, and Bandit is up 6%. Heeler is new to the list this year.
Other beloved Bluey-inspired names include Lucky, Indy, Trixie, Muffin, Calypso, and Frisky.

We’re all comparing the new cast of RHONY vs the old cast, right? If dog names are any indicator, the OGs win. Countess (31%), Luann (17%) and Leah (12%) are trending up, while Brynn (-6%), Erin (-6%), Sai (-11%), and Jenna (-13%) are trending down.

Kardashian exes are also having their moment: Tristan is up 12%, Scott is up 10%, and Pete is up 4%. Not all exes are thriving, though, as the dog name Kanye is trending down 42% this year.
We’re Gonna Tell You a Little Secret: Yellowstone Names Are Trending Up
The mega drama inspired by Big Sky country has also inspired pet parents when it comes to dog names. Teeter is up 297%, followed by Dutton (53%), Beth (29%), Rip (21%), and Monica (14%).
Yellowstone is down -82%.
Vanderpump Rules When it Comes to Dog Names
While there are no dogs named Scandoval (yet), the dog name Sandoval is up 197% this year.
Ariana supporters rejoice: The dog name Maddix is up 18% and Sandwich is up 10%. There’s something about her.
In what could be his best PR all year, the dog name Schwartz is up 17% this year.
James, Lisa, Stassi, and Jax are down -12%, -4%, -3%, and -2%, respectively. Sadly, there are no dogs named Pumptini.

Dogs named Chef are trending up 5% and Top Chef judge Gail is trending up 24%.

Parks and Rec might be long off the air, but its influence lives on. Ron Swanson, Jean-Ralphio, Mouserat, and Ann Perkins are all new to the list this year. Pawnee is up 48%, and Duke Silver is up 38%. But is it time to say bye-bye to Lil Sebastian? His name is down -77%.

Some chronically online pet parents are memorializing the name of their favorite renamed social media platform by naming their dogs Twitter, which is trending up 247% for dogs. Given this, it’s also no surprise that Elon (up 11%) and Musk (up 47%) are also trending. Likely inspired by the latest social sharing platform from Meta, the name Threads appeared on the list for the first time.
It was a big year for artificial intelligence tech too, which we see reflected in pet names: the name AI is trending up 97% for dogs.
Blockbuster Dog Names in 2023
This year was all about Barbie! For the first time, Mattel appeared on the list for dogs. Ken is trending up 79%, and Barb is up 12%. Also on the list? Greta, Barbie, and Allan.

- The top trending pet names from Marvel movies include Deadpool, Zemo, Mystique, Colter, Castle, Rooster, and Ultra.

Is there a link between dog breeds and the names we give them? For the top five most popular breeds in America, we noticed some trends. First up is the mixed breed, whose most popular trending names are: Beetlejuice, Fauna, Leslie, Mystery, and Pascal.
Next is the friendly and outgoing Labrador Retriever, whose most popular names are: Scott, Banx, Cashew, Cadbury, and Castiel. The Goldendoodle is the third most popular breed, and people love to name these loyal, affectionate pups Andie, Lucy Liu, Puff, Clay, and Flo.
The Golden Retriever takes fourth in our most popular dog breeds list, and these loyal family dogs are most often named Andie, Duckie, Gentry, Gordy, and Juliette. Last but not least is the intelligent, athletic German Shepherd, whose top trending names are Fenway, Dany, Haven, Beatrice, and Nezuko.
