I have also grown up with two dogs and a bird, who have since passed. My roommates' cats and dogs have felt like family to me, and treated as such. I have a car to go to the dog park at Kingston Point Park, and also have a great neighborhood to walk around in. I allow my dogs on the couch, but understand if that is not something you prefer.
