Tommy did an excellent job caring for our cat and 3 pups, one of which is a puppy. We don’t leave them with others very often so we were a little concerned the day would be stressful for them, especially for our 12 year old lab. Fortunately, we were happy to find all of them in perfectly content moods when we got home. They didn’t seem to care at all that we’d been gone. In addition, our home was left in immaculate shape, despite it being a muddy, rainy day. 10/10, will book again!

About: I grew up with two cats, so I love cats as well as dogs. In 2019, I adopted an incredibly loving, gorgeous lab pit named Lucy, and she keeps me very active every day! She was a rescue dog, and although we were originally fostering her, I bonded with her too much to let her go. I’ve always been a natural introvert and have been drawn to the compassion of animals. I believe we can learn more about our own humanity through caring for animals. I look forward to meeting your amazing furry friends! In addition to Rover, I substitute teach right now, and this allows me to have a very flexible schedule. It's closer to part-time than full-time. My priority is to listen and adapt to each client’s needs/preferences, so that both the client and their pets will be as happy as possible.

John did a fantastic job watching our lively golden retriever, Ranger. He took him for outings and fun things other than just walks. John stayed in our home and was respectful and treated it as if it were his own! I highly recommend John for any pet care.

We had an amazing experience with Eliza! She stayed at our home for several days and nights while caring for our French Bulldogs and our cats, and we couldn’t have asked for a better pet sitter. From the moment we left, we had complete peace of mind knowing our pets were in such caring and responsible hands. Eliza kept us updated, treated our home with respect, and most importantly, gave our pets so much love and attention. It was obvious they were comfortable, happy, and well cared for while we were away. Coming home to relaxed, happy pets and a well-kept house was the best feeling. We are so grateful for everything Eliza did and would absolutely trust her again. We highly recommend her to anyone looking for a reliable, compassionate, and trustworthy pet sitter!

About: Animals have always been a huge part of my life. I grew up with three schnauzers and have over 5 years of experience caring for dogs of all kinds. From pups to senior dogs, shy pups like Luna, playful rescues like Moose, and spunky dogs like Pippa, I have loved getting to know them all. I have experience with feeding, administering medications, and maintaining consistent daily routines. My patient and attentive approach helps me connect with all types of dogs. I love giving them plenty of playtime, cuddles, and walks; one wag at a time 🐾 As a recent college graduate, I have a remote job that gives me the flexibility to work from home. I can take dogs on walks during my breaks or stay with them at home. I am available during the weekdays and weekends to ensure your dog has consistent attention, companionship, and care whenever you need it. Every dog I care for becomes part of my family. I provide walks, playtime, and plenty of cuddles, making sure they have a safe, comfortable space to relax. I follow their usual routines, whether that’s lounging on their couch, resting in their crate, or engaging in activities. I’m happy to help with anything that makes them feel most at home, including discussing any medication needs in advance to ensure their care is safe and consistent.

Mackenzie is a wonderful dog sitter. Our dog Nugget is very attached to his family. He gets quite anxious when we’re preparing for vacation and then again as the week progresses. MacKenzie stayed in our home; a first for us as Rover customers. She respected our home to the point where we could hardly tell she spent the week. Nugget was completely calm with MacKenzie. In fact he seemed to be looking for her our first morning back. She truly is a dog whisperer. We highly recommend MacKenzie and look forward to having her again. We’re confident Nugget will be thrilled to see her!!

This was our first time having Nancy house-sit Sofia. Sofia is very shy but at the pre-meeting, she immediately approached Nancy with her tail wagging and let her pet her. I didn't worry at all leaving her in Nancy's care. She sent regular photos and updates.

Sarah was amazing while dog sitting and house sitting for us. Ajax is a great dog but can be a little needy with attention so she took great care of him with walks and attention every day. Not to mention we had several house snafus while she stayed which she handled so professionally on our behalf! Thank you Sarah!

About: I have 6+ years of taking care of my 2 jack Russell’s, neighbors dogs + cats in 3 different states and my boyfriends parents 2 cats (1 disabled). Promptly giving medicine to those animals in need for specific time, and patience tending to their attentions and needs. I work full time remote M-Thursday 8am-4pm with an hour and half lunch break each day. I work 3x a week part time on site and can be flexible as needed. I have a high energy dog (Jack Russell) that requires a lot of assertiveness and strict use of instruction. But at the same time requires rewards and playtime. I love to care for animals, but also care about the safety of myself, and owners property always keeping that at a #1 priority of my surroundings and the pets safety and better interest of the owner.

FAQs for House Sitting - Canastota

Frequently asked questions about Rover

As of August 2026, there are 330 sitters on Rover offering House Sitting across Canastota. Enter your ZIP code to see which available sitters are closest to your home.

Beyond belly rubs and feeding schedules, a house sitter’s presence may provide an additional layer of security for your home. However, you will need to arrange overnight stays and other household tasks with your sitter when reaching out to them. Not all sitters offer the same services. Common household tasks you can negotiate include:

  • Mail & deliveries: Collecting letters and packages so they don't pile up.
  • Plant care: Keeping your indoor or outdoor garden hydrated.
  • Trash & recycling: Taking trash cans to the curb on scheduled pickup days.
  • Home security: Sitters can stay overnight to keep your home occupied.

The best way to align on expectations is during your free Meet & Greet. Use this time to provide a "home cheat sheet" that includes your preferred Canastota walking routes, the location of your favorite pet store, and any specific quirks about your home’s security or appliances.

It’s helpful to think of house sitting as a "home base" service. Most sitters in Canastota maintain their normal daily routines, like running errands or heading to the office, meaning your pet should be comfortable being alone for a few hours at a time. If your pet needs a little extra company, here is how to find the perfect match:

  • Look for "WFH" sitters: Many sitters mention "Work from Home" on their profile to indicate they’ll be present for the majority of the day.
  • Update your pet’s profile: Write down how long your pet can comfortably be left alone. This helps sitters quickly determine if their schedule aligns with your needs.
  • Communicate 24/7 needs: Standard house sitting usually doesn't include constant supervision. If your pet requires round-the-clock care, be sure to discuss this upfront.

Tip: Use the Meet & Greet to confirm a sitter's typical "away" windows. Transparency ensures your pet stays happy and your sitter can plan their day effectively!

Key handling is entirely up to you and your sitter to agree on during the Meet & Greet or in the Rover app. Most pet parents in Canastota choose to hand over a spare key or digital fob in person, while others arrange a lockbox or unique access code. Don't forget to discuss key returns as well!

The Rover Guarantee is Rover’s commitment to your peace of mind every time you book. It includes 24/7 customer support, sitter access to advice from qualified veterinary professionals for diagnostic issues, and a reimbursement program for eligible veterinary care in the rare event something goes wrong.

All bookings are backed by the Rover Guarantee , which provides up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care reimbursement.

Every sitter on Rover is required to pass a background check before listing their services. This process confirms their identity and indicates they are not on the Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Public Website or have any disqualifying offenses.

Beyond ID checks, you can review each sitter's star rating, read verified reviews from other pet parents, and see how many repeat clients they have. Every booking is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care. For more details, visit Rover's Trust & Safety page .

If a health concern arises during a stay, your sitter is instructed to contact you and our Trust & Safety team immediately and, if needed, take your pet to the closest veterinarian. Through our Trust & Safety support team, sitters can ask for diagnostic advice from a qualified veterinary professional if your pet is showing signs of possible illness.

For extra peace of mind, you can also prepare an authorization form for your regular vet. An authorization form outlines your preferred method of care and allows your sitter to bring your pet into their regular clinic.

Every qualified booking made on Rover is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes reimbursement for eligible emergency vet care.

A Meet & Greet is a short introductory meeting between you, your pet, and a sitter. It can take place in person or virtually, although we recommend in-person so that your pet can get to know your sitter or the new environment. During the Meet & Greet, you will have a chance to walk through your pet's routine, medical needs, and unique quirks. Take the time to ask your sitter questions about their skills and expertise, and make sure the fit feels right for everyone. Most pet parents and sitters on Rover welcome Meet & Greets because the process can give confidence and peace of mind for service experiences, especially for longer stays or first-time bookings.

Sitters on Rover set their own cancellation policy, which you can find on their profile under their calendar availability.

Cancelling before a booking begins and before the sitter's cutoff time qualifies you for a full refund. Same-day cancellations for walks, day care, and drop-ins follow the full refund policy. Otherwise, for dog boarding and house sitting, you will receive a 50% refund for the first seven days of the booking and a 100% refund for the remaining days when you cancel the same day a booking should begin.

If your sitter needs to cancel within seven days of the booking's start date, then our reservation protection will kick in. This means our support team works with you to find a replacement sitter.

Yes, you can find sitters who have experience with handling special pet needs in Canastota. On Rover:

  • 94% of sitters can help with special care needs
  • 100% can help with giving oral medications or injections
  • 100% can help with daily exercise

You can also find pet sitters on Rover who accept only one pet at a time, which is ideal for anxious puppies, kittens, or senior pets who move at a gentler pace. Some sitters will also list availability for 24/7 care, also known as constant care, in their profiles.

Use the search filters to narrow down sitters whose specific experience or environment meets your pet's needs. When reaching out to your sitter, outline your pet's care routine and use the Meet & Greet to walk your sitter through your expectations.
