“I cannot thank Stephen (and Gele) enough for the excellent care he provided for our two elderly cats. They needed medicine via oral pills and insulin injections, and one has had accidents in the past. He was very attentive to every detail and instruction, and very thorough with his care in feeding them, providing water, checking litter, being on alert for any accidents, administering medication, and providing loving care and attention to them. I felt at ease on our extended trip knowing that they were in good hands. (With our knowledge and permission) He consulted a friend of his, Gele, that helps at a rescue with senior cats to ensure that they were getting everything they needed. She came along to many of the visits since Stephen admitted he had never cared for elderly cats with so many needs and she had a better understanding to teach him so he could do it alone on his solo visits. Gele was also wonderful with our cats and we thank her so much for her time and loving care. He was also kind enough to help with things like lights, trash collection, and getting the mail. Would highly recommend him (and Gele)!!”

“Jennifer was fantastic! This was our first time using Rover and she helped us understand all the basics; she communicated well before, during and after; was very prompt; was able to adjust her time to come a little earlier when we were able to get there earlier; and was just all around great from a scheduling perspective. If my dog could leave a review, he would say she was terrific. I know thi because he settled down right away and was comfortable and relaxed when I returned home!”

About: Hi. My name is Hope. I love dogs I have one of my own whom I pamper every day. I would love to walk or watch your dog in your home. or taking him or her to the park, giving your family member stimulation and fun and an active lifestyle. I would love to get to know your animal and help out as much as possible. I would adapt my dog walking and sitting style to fit your dogs special needs. I would also use a comforting tone and spend time with them as they miss you, or even in the early stages of getting used to a new home, I would find ways to make them comfortable while making sure they are fed, walked, watered, and know that they are loved.

About: I’ve grown up around dogs and cared for my own for years. From daily walks and playtime to keeping up with feeding and routines, I make sure pets feel safe, happy, and loved like they’re part of the family. Hi, I’m Mike! I’ve cared for dogs most of my life and know how important it is to trust the person looking after your pet. I make sure every dog feels safe, loved, and part of the family—whether that’s daily walks, playtime, or sticking to their routine. I’m reliable. Ask for the general routine of the pet what special medication if any applicable and any other specific type of care the owners are requesting

About: With experience as a former veterinary technician, I have a strong background in providing safe, attentive, and compassionate care for dogs and cats. I’m experienced with administering medications, maintaining daily routines, and providing general pet care while paying close attention to each animal’s individual needs. I’ve worked in a variety of animal shelters and kennels, giving me experience with pets of different ages, personalities, and behavioral needs. I have a particular understanding of dog behavior and am comfortable working with shy, nervous, or anxious dogs and cats. My goal is always to help each pet feel safe, comfortable, and cared for in their own environment. I also previously fostered puppies through the Brandywine SPCA, where I helped prepare them for adoption by teaching basic commands, manners, and foundational training. Before each pet-sitting stay, I like to meet with you and your pets so I can learn their routines, preferences, personalities, and specific needs. Building trust with both pets and their owners is very important to me. I look forward to meeting your pets and providing them with the same patience, attention, and care I would give my own. Your pets’ safety and well-being are always my top priorities I currently work full-time at a kennel with a consistent schedule, including the same days off each week. My typical shifts are six hours, with occasional 10-hour weekend shifts. I receive my schedule two weeks in advance, allowing me to plan ahead and maintain flexibility for additional work commitments While I’m currently unable to have pets in my own home, I’m happy to travel to your home to provide pet-sitting services. I like to meet both you and your pets beforehand so they can get comfortable with me in their own environment. This also gives me the opportunity to learn about their routines, personalities, and individual needs while getting to know you and building a trusting relationship. I love spending quality time with pets, whether that means playing with dogs and cats, giving them attention and companionship, or simply making sure they feel comfortable and cared for while you’re away. :::

About: Hi! I’m 20 years old and have loved animals my whole life. I currently have a 3-year-old pitbull, 2-year-old rat, and a 7-year-old horse, and I’ve been riding horses for as long as I can remember. Family, friends, and neighbors have trusted me for years to feed, care for, and spend time with their pets. I’m reliable, patient, and truly enjoy making animals feel safe, happy, and loved while their owners are away. I’m a hairstylist with a flexible schedule, so I have plenty of time to give your pets the love, attention, playtime, and care they deserve! I’m usually most available Fridays through Mondays, with flexible evening availability during the week as well. I understand how important it is to trust someone with both your pets and your home. I care deeply about making animals feel safe, comfortable, and loved while their owners are away, and I treat every home with the same respect and care I would want for my own. About: With four years of experience, I've developed a deep understanding of dog care. My hands-on work has taught me to handle a variety of breeds and temperaments, managing everything from feeding and medication to special routines. My own rescue dog has added a personal layer to my professional skills. It's taught me the empathy and patience needed to build trust, proving that my approach is rooted in genuine love and a true commitment to a dog's well-being. Caring for my own rescue dog has naturally woven pet care into the very fabric of my daily and weekly routine. It's not a chore; it's a structured part of my day that brings consistency to my life, and most importantly, to his. Daily Routine: Morning: The day starts with a walk and a feeding. This isn't just about meeting his basic needs; it's our time to bond, to get some fresh air, and to start the day with a positive routine. Throughout the day: Even when I'm working, I make sure to have dedicated breaks for play and mental stimulation. This could be a quick game of fetch, a puzzle feeder, or a brief training session to reinforce good behavior. These short bursts of attention prevent boredom and keep him happy. Evening: The day winds down with another walk, dinner, and some quiet time. This is often our cuddle time, where he gets a chance to relax and feel secure, which is especially important for a rescue. When a pet stays with me, they become a temporary member of my family. My focus is on providing a safe, comfortable, and enriching environment that minimizes the stress of being away from home. A "Home Away from Home": I provide a structured but loving environment, mirroring a typical household. My home is completely pet-proofed, with a secure backyard for safe play and potty breaks. Consistency is Key: I work with the owner to maintain the pet's regular schedule for feeding, medication, and sleep. I have a dedicated space for each dog's belongings (food, toys, bed) to help them feel at ease.

About: HI! My name is Alisha and the only thing I love more than a good pun is a good doggie! I have been a lover of all animals since as early as I can remember. I am very active and love bringing the pups out on my runs and exploring nature together. I am patient and love cuddles and kisses, but am a stickler for manners, rules, and boundaries. I have experience with deaf dogs, potty training, and crate training. My schedule is very flexible right now for any service you are in need of and have reliable transportation. I hope I can meet your doggie soon so I can have another new four-legged friend! There is a lot of flexibility in my current work schedule, so that means I have pretty open availability to supervise, play, and cuddle with your baby!! In my house home pets are part of the family. They deserve all the love and attention to give them the very best life possible!

FAQs for Pet Sitting - Joanna

Frequently asked questions about Rover

Rover is the largest marketplace for local pet care. Whether you're looking for pet sitters, dog walkers, or house sitters who specialize in pet sitting, you can narrow your search by entering your ZIP code to find sitters within walking distance in your neighborhood.

You and your sitter can agree on a care schedule that fits your pet’s routine and the sitter’s availability. Pet Sitting can be booked as a one-time or recurring drop-in visit. If you need overnight care or dog walks, you may also be able to book House Sitting or Dog Walking through Rover with the same sitter, provided they offer those services.

Before booking, confirm:

  • the timing, length, and frequency of visits;
  • the care instructions the sitter should follow;
  • which parts of your pet’s usual routine should be prioritized;
  • how often you would like to receive messages, photos, or other updates.

Not every sitter offers the same services, availability, or booking options. Review their profile and discuss the care you need through Rover before booking each service.

If you would like updates while you’re away, you can discuss with your sitter how many or how frequent you’d like those updates to be. The Rover app allows sitters to send photos, videos, and messages about your pet, including how many pee or poop breaks occurred. You can message your sitter at any time through the app and our support team is available 24/7 by email or chat if you have concerns.

The personalized, in-home nature of pet care through Rover can mean more individual attention for your pet.

Many pet parents provide a spare key or arrange a lockbox. You can also exchange keys during the Meet & Greet and show your walker how to use digital fobs or personalized codes. It helps to arrange access to your home, from spare keys to concierge introductions, before pet care begins.

If you live in an apartment or condo, don’t forget to discuss details like buzzer access, codes, or elevator etiquette. These details can help a pet sitter feel more comfortable going in and out of your building.

Every sitter on Rover is required to pass a background check before listing their services. This process confirms their identity and indicates they are not on the Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Public Website or have any disqualifying offenses.

Beyond ID checks, you can review each sitter's star rating, read verified reviews from other pet parents, and see how many repeat clients they have. Every booking is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care. For more details, visit Rover's Trust & Safety page.

The Rover Guarantee is Rover’s commitment to your peace of mind every time you book. It includes 24/7 customer support, sitter access to advice from qualified veterinary professionals for diagnostic issues, and a reimbursement program for eligible veterinary care in the rare event something goes wrong.

All bookings are backed by the Rover Guarantee, which provides up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care reimbursement.

Yes, you can find sitters who have experience administering medication or managing dietary requirements. You can also find pet sitters who accept only one pet at a time, which is ideal for anxious puppies or senior pets who move at a gentler pace. Some sitters will also list availability for 24/7 care, also known as constant care, in their profiles.

Use the search filters to narrow down sitters whose specific experience or environment meets your pet's needs. When reaching out to your sitter, outline your pet's care routine and request a Meet & Greet to walk your sitter through your expectations.

A Meet & Greet is a casual meeting to vet potential sitters and communicate care needs for peace of mind before a booking begins. Only sitters who have never booked with you before can schedule a Meet & Greet on Rover; however, you are welcome to coordinate one in Rover messages with sitters you have previously booked. This can be helpful if you have a new pet or routine you want to go over with your sitter.

Meet & Greets can take place in person or virtually. If you are booking with a sitter for the first time, we recommend in-person Meet & Greets to get a clearer sense of how your sitter interacts with your pet or the new environment.

During the Meet & Greet, you will have a chance to walk through your pet's routine, medical needs, and unique quirks. Take the time to ask your sitter questions about their skills and expertise, and make sure the fit feels right for everyone. Meet & Greets are a great way to prepare your pet and sitter for longer stays or first-time bookings. Read our tips for your first Meet & Greet.

sitters on Rover set their own cancellation policy, which you can find on their profile under their contact information. Sitters may set a same-day, one-, three-, or seven-day cancellation policy. Cancelling within your sitter’s cancellation policy qualifies you for a full refund.

Same-day cancellations for recurring services, which include walks, drop-ins, and day care, follow the full refund policy. Otherwise, for pet boarding and house sitting, if you cancel after 12 pm on the applicable cancellation deadline, you’ll receive a 50% refund for the first seven days of the booking and a 100% refund for any remaining days.

If your sitter needs to cancel within seven days of the booking's start date, then our reservation protection will kick in. This means you will get a full refund and our support team will work with you to find a replacement sitter.
