Pet Policy
Rules and restrictions
Be sure to review this information before your trip and plan accordingly. And remember that all airlines have different restrictions, so read each airline’s rules before you book a new trip.
- Pets allowed in the main cabin: dogs, cats, rabbits, and household birds. Generally, in-cabin crates should be soft-sided and fit under the plane seat in front of you.
- Brachycephalic dogs and cats are not accepted for travel in the baggage hold but may still travel in the cabin. Brachycephalic breeds are those with a shortened head and nose, and flat face such as pugs, shih tzus, and Chihuahuas. They typically have trouble breathing, which flying can exacerbate.
- Pets allowed in baggage hold: cats, dogs, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, household birds, non-poisonous reptiles, pot-bellied pigs, rabbits, and tropical fish. For cargo crates, the ASPCA says that crates should be large enough for your pet to sit, stand, and turn around in.
- Pets traveling in the baggage hold must have a health certificate dated within 10 days of outbound travel.
- Domestic: Only cats and dogs can travel to and from Hawaii.
- International: Only cats and dogs can travel to the United States from a non-US location and for travel to Mexico, Canada, and Costa Rica.
