Pet Policy
Rules and restrictions
Be sure to review this information before your trip and plan accordingly. And remember that all airlines have different restrictions, so read each airline’s rules before you book a new trip.
- Pets are not permitted in the main cabin, though separate processes are applied for people traveling with service animals.
- Domestic cats, dogs, and rabbits are allowed to travel in baggage hold on flights within Europe. For cargo crates, the ASPCA says that crates should be large enough for your pet to sit, stand, and turn around in.
- Pets not allowed to travel on aircraft under any circumstance: akita, American pit bull, American Staffordshire terrier, Argentino, Fila Braziliero, mastiff, pit bull terrier, Japanese tosa, and rottweiler.
- The following brachycephalic dogs or cats will not be carried due to their inability to breathe easily and cool themselves down: all bulldogs, pugs, boxers, and Persian/exotic cats. Brachycephalic breeds are those with a shortened head and nose and flat face such as pugs, shih tzus, and Chihuahuas. They typically have trouble breathing, which flying can exacerbate.
Domestic:
- Animals can be shipped as excess baggage to Boston, Newark, Washington, New York, Miami, Orlando, Chicago, and Toronto.
- Animals cannot be shipped as excess baggage on flights to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, or Minneapolis.
International:
- All household pets (cats and dogs only) traveling to Ireland from North America must travel as cargo.
