Looking for a dog that’s tinier than a teacup? Then one of these toy dog breeds might be just the pet to warm your lap. Small dogs can be wonderful companions for older folks, great for dog lovers in urban settings, and perfect for anyone who loves the idea of bringing the dog along. These ten breeds are some of the smallest, cutest, pocket-sized pets around.
Note: we don’t advocate for the extra-tiny teacup dog breeding that has become popular in recent years. Breeding for the smallest possible size of dog can lead to some serious health problems. Rather than search out a specially-named “teacup dog,” look for one of the following small breeds from a responsible breeder.
Brussels griffon
There are three breeds under the Brussels griffon masthead: the red wire-haired Griffon Bruxellois, the black wire-haired Griffon Belge, and the short-coated Petit Brabançon (pictured). The griff weighs in at 7-12 pounds.
Miniature poodle
The poodle is the only breed with three official size designations— standard, miniature, and the toy poodle (pictured), which weighs in at 5-10 pounds.
Yorkie
The Yorkshire terrier is a petite 4-7 pound ratter with glorious long locks, although the short teddy bear cut is hugely popular for cuteness and convenience.
Maltese
The Maltese is a sweet little 4-7 pound lap-loving dog. This all-white dog has a luxurious coat, which is often groomed short with long, beautiful hair kept on the ears.
Japanese chin
The ancient and beautiful 4-7 pound Japanese chin is the most cat-like toy dog breed. They’ll often groom their face with a paw and even like perching in high places.
Chihuahua
The Chihuahua is a popular 4-6 pound dog. Chihuahuas come in a range of styles, including short and long-haired varieties.
Toy fox terrier
The toy fox terrier is a 3.5 – 9 pound curious and active dog, once used in circus performances.
Papillon
The papillon is named “butterfly” for her glorious fringed ears. A petite 3-10 pounds, she is the smallest of the spaniels.
Pomeranian
The Pomeranian is a 3-7 pound puffball. The foxy little spitz is famous for its plumed tail worn jauntily over the back.
Russian toy
The very tiniest terrier, the 2-6 pound Russian toy is new to the AKC, having been added in 2008.
