Welcoming a new puppy into your fold means lots of new essentials for your new furry family member. One such must-have is a puppy bed.
Choosing a bed for your friend depends on the type of puppy you have. Is your puppy potty-trained yet? If not, look into beds made with waterproof materials or that are machine-washable in case of accidents. Got a chewer or a digger on your hands? Be sure to consider beds made from tough materials that are resistant to puppy wear and tear.
Lastly, and importantly, is your dog going to grow a lot? Growth is minimal in smaller breeds but becomes more significant the bigger the breed—so you’ll need to consider if you’d like to grab a large bed now, or start small and upgrade later.
As we rounded up our favorite dog beds for puppies, we spoke to veterinarian Dr. TB Thompson, DVM, of Your Vet Friend about what to look for in a puppy bed.
Overall Best: PetFusion Ultimate Pet Bed
“Pet parents should look for beds that are tough and washable. It’s essential to opt for a bed that makes it challenging for the puppy to chew through the cover and access any stuffing material, which they could potentially ingest. Beds designed to withstand rough treatment and frequent washing will generally be the best choice,” Dr. Thompson tells Rover.
This PetFusion bolster bed has all of the recommended features a pet parent could want in a puppy bed, and our testers found that it lives up to the “ultimate” descriptor in its name. A 4-inch memory foam base and almost fully enclosed design helps keep pups nice and comfy while the machine-washable, tear- and water-resistant cover helps stand up to puppy digging, nibbling, and accidents.
It’s on the pricey side—but it’s also unusually sturdy and can serve a dog well into adulthood, especially with its orthopedic base.
What we like about it:
- Constructed with supportive memory foam material
- Waterproof liner helps protect floors from accidents
- Not recommended for strong chewers
Best Chew-Resistant: Kuranda Indestructible Elevated Dog Bed
Is your puppy an unrepentant chewer?
“Beds with thin covers and polyfill stuffing could be potentially dangerous. If a puppy manages to chew through such a bed, they could ingest the filling, posing a risk to their health,” says Dr. Thompson.
That’s why this Kuranda bed is a safer choice for puppies that are heavy chewers. While it takes a bit of effort to assemble, it’s made from heavy-duty PVC or aluminum pipes and Cordura fabric in a raised orthopedic design that’s resistant to chewing. Used by shelters and rescues, upgrades are available with a one-year warranty.
It may not be the coziest looking bed, but it is one of the safest for sharp puppy teeth and destructive ambition.
What we like about it:
- Durable, heavy-duty construction
- Can be easily cleaned with a water hose
- 5 sizes and 3 color options available
Best for Digging and Scratching: K9 Ballistics Tough Puppy Bed
A more traditional option for chewtastic puppies comes from K9 Ballistics in the form of this pillow-style bed. The removable covers are available in several colors, have a 90-day limited damage warranty, and are waterproof and machine-washable. Plus, the bed is also fur-resistant and easy to keep clean, making it a good choice for pups who love to dig, scratch, and burrow.
What we like about it:
- Durable construction with rip-stop material
- Non-skid, waterproof lining
- Fully machine-washable (and recommended to air dry)
Best for Burrowing: FurHaven Snuggery Puppy Bed
For puppies who love to burrow underneath blankets and be snug as a bug in a rug, a covered bed is a smart choice. The adjustable, flexible top of this soft donut-style bed from FurHaven can be raised to create a tent experience, or you can remove the inner hoop for more of a bed/blanket combo. The memory foam bed is extra snuggly with its faux sheepskin lining and comes in five colors.
We especially recommend covered and cave style beds for small breeds like Dachshunds, who are famous burrowers—though our reviewers’ experiences tell us that big pups can be cover hogs too.
What we like about it:
- Adjustable top can lay flat like a blanket or be raised as a cover
- Soft velvet material
- Easy-to-clean, machine-washable cover
Best for Large-Breed Puppies: Dogbed4less Memory Foam Dog Bed
A solid choice for large-breed puppies, this relatively sturdy bed gets great reviews. Its memory foam filling is squishier than options like the K9 Ballistics, but double covers give it durability—the outer layer is a waterproof, machine-washable denim that holds up well to puppy shenanigans.
Our tester, a Rover sitter, found that both her own dogs and the Rover dogs she hosted were “obsessed” with this bed—especially when the alternate microsuede cover was on it.
What we like about it:
- Bolster-less style allows dogs to spread out
- Thick, memory foam material to support heavier puppies
- Includes two options for covers
Best Crate Bed: Brindle Memory Foam Dog Bed
Crating is a new experience for a lot of puppies, and adding a soft bed to your dog’s crate can help them adjust. But it’s also important that your pup’s crate bed be durable, since nibbling and accidents are a puppy’s favorite pastimes. This shredded memory foam bed fits the bill nicely with a removable waterproof cover and several sizes to fit inside most crates.
What we like about it:
- Super-soft outer material with memory foam support
- Waterproof, machine-washable cover
- Non-skid bottom to keep bed in place
Best Round-Style: Majestic Pet Velvet Bagel Bolster Dog Bed
This popular bagel-style bed from Majestic Pet is made in the U.S. with a water-resistant base to safeguard against pet messes. But when accidents do happen, you can throw this entire bed in the washing machine; larger sizes come with removable covers. We like the mix of soft velvety fabric and full-side bolsters—a design that some pups find calming—and relatively sturdy, easy-to-wash fabric for puppy mishaps.
What we like about it:
- Round design that’s perfect for curling up
- Sofy velvet material
- Easy to clean
Most Comforting: Best Friends by Sheri Calming Shag Fur Donut
This calming cuddler has taken over the internet—and for good reason, our testers discovered. The round design and faux shag make for a comforting curl up for young and anxious dogs. The fur is designed to simulate the feel of a mother and litter mates, while the bolstered sides offer a sense of security. Bonus? This bed is safe for both the washing machine and dryer.
Our only watchout? We found it reasonably sturdy, but we’re pretty confident it won’t hold up to a committed bed chewer.
What we like about it:
- Faux fur material is comforting to puppies
- Water and dirt-resistant bottom
- Available in a variety of sizes and colors
Best for Warmth: Aspen Pet Self-Warming Puppy Bed
According to Dr. Thompson, many puppies will appreciate having a soft, cozy bed, especially in colder weather. That’s why this self-warming corduroy and faux lambswool bed is a great choice for the winter months. It’s constructed with an interior self-warming layer—similar to a space blanket—to comfort pups and keep them nice and toasty.
What we like about it:
- No electricity required
- Non-slip bottom
- Machine-washable and dryable
Most Stylish: P.L.A.Y. Moroccan Lounge Dog Bed
P.L.A.Y. makes high-quality pet products—that includes a bed for your pup. Available in different patterns, we love this beautiful Moroccan design, which comes in two hues. Stuffed with a recycled, eco-friendly filling, this sturdy 100% non-toxic cotton canvas bed offers orthopedic support through bolster construction in the center and perimeter—and can go in the washer and dryer.
What we like about it:
- High-quality construction
- Made with eco-friendly materials
- Red or navy color options
Best Mat: FurHaven Self-Warming Convertible Cuddle Mat Bolster
FurHaven’s mat is four beds in one. Great for floor naps, sofa snuggles, or some extra padding while traveling or inside a crate, this machine-washable mat is made to reflect your pup’s own body heat to keep them cozy and comfortable wherever they lay their head. Use as a mat, or configure into a canoe, bolster, or couch shape via the edge buttons and corner loops.
What we like about it:
- Designed for puppies up to 20 pounds
- Self-warming, faux material
- Machine-washable
