“Kim was great with our pup. He came home very happy. Trusting someone you don’t know well with part of your family isn’t easy. But from the moment I dropped my dog off, I knew instantly he would be loved and cared for. I had no fears leaving him and would absolutely recommend Kim as a sitter/boarder. My family does a lot of traveling and I would be more than pleased to have her watch him again!”

About: PROFESSIONAL PET CARE | 10+ YEARS OF EXPERIENCE | CPR & FIRST AID CERTIFIED Hi, I'm Maddy! I'm the owner of Blue Birch Pet Care & Training, providing professional, fully insured pet care backed by over a decade of hands-on experience with domestic, exotic, and farm animals. Pet care is my profession, not a side job. My background includes zoology, animal behavior, veterinary-related education, specialized handling, and experience with animals of all ages, species, and care requirements. MY EXPERIENCE & SPECIALTIES - Behavior & Training: Positive reinforcement and fear free training, behavior management and rehabilitation, enrichment, and individualized training support for all needs. - Medical & Special-Needs Care: Medical rehabilitation, medication administration, neonatal and postnatal care, bottle/syringe feeding, senior care, mobility assistance, emergency care, and wildlife rehabilitation - Emergency Preparedness: Pet CPR and first aid certification, with an emphasis on prevention, safety, and prompt communication. - Comprehensive Pet Care: Walking, drop-ins, boarding, daycare, overnight house sitting, grooming, and pet transportation. - All Species Welcome: Dogs, cats, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, birds/fowl, exotic pets, and small or large farm animals. SAFETY, ACCOUNTABILITY & COMMUNICATION I prioritize individualized care, safe handling, established routines, and detailed communication. I utilize GPS tracking and a vehicle dashcam for professional accountability. I also encourage clients to consider exterior security cameras for additional peace of mind. For boarding and daycare, I prioritize appropriate supervision, secure environments, and each animal's individual comfort and safety. I offer private daycare and boarding, or group, with or without socialization with the other animals. SPECIALIZED ANIMAL CARE & PRICING I welcome inquiries for exotic pets, livestock, poultry, and animals requiring specialized medical or behavioral support. Please contact me to discuss your pet's needs, availability, and individualized pricing. Your pet's physical and emotional well-being is my priority. I understand the trust involved in choosing a caregiver and am committed to providing knowledgeable, dependable, compassionate care you can feel confident in. I have a highly flexible schedule and can accommodate last-minute changes as needed. Since my college coursework is asynchronous, I can adapt my work to fit around your schedule seamlessly. As a business owner who manages my own time, I prioritize reliability and responsiveness, ensuring that your pet’s needs are always met with the highest level of care and attention. Commitment to Quality Care in Your Home When caring for your pet in your home, I strive to go above and beyond to ensure both your pet's well-being and your peace of mind. If I notice anything out of place or in need of tidying, I’m happy to help—but always with your prior approval. I understand that personal preferences vary; some clients prefer to handle certain tasks themselves, while others appreciate the extra assistance. My goal is to respect your space and treat your home with the same level of care I would my own. Having spent the last two years renovating my own home, I deeply understand the importance of maintaining a clean and organized environment. Safety and Pet Care Best Practices Your pet’s safety is my top priority, and I take every precaution to ensure their well-being: Secure Transportation: If I transport your pet, they will always be properly restrained with a seatbelt or pet travel carrier for safety. Leash & Walk Safety: On walks, I ensure pets do not pick up items from the ground. I also clean their paws after every outing, just as I do with my own pets. Hygiene & Health: If your pet gets dirty, I will provide a bath with your permission. Any medical concerns will be addressed immediately, and I am trained in emergency pet first aid, excluding surgical procedures. Home Security: I will ensure all doors and windows are securely locked when leaving your home. Privacy & Updates: I will only take photos of your pet for your updates and will never photograph your home without permission. Supervision & Outdoor Time: Pets in my care will never be left alone in a vehicle or outside unattended, even in my fenced yard. Cats will remain indoors unless they are harness-trained and you request outdoor time. Stranger Interaction: While on walks, your pet will not interact with strangers or other animals unless pre-approved for socialization. Pet Care in My Home Pets in my home receive dedicated supervision unless prior arrangements are made: Dogs: If a dog is staying with me and needs to be left alone for an extended period, I require a crate for their safety and comfort. However, my schedule is highly flexible, minimizing the time they are left alone. Cats: Cats may be left unsupervised in a designated, pet-safe room with regular check-ins. Handling Aggressive or Special Needs Pets I have extensive experience with fearful, reactive, and aggressive pets, but clear and honest communication is essential: Cats: I am comfortable handling feral or aggressive cats and will take the necessary time to build trust. I can administer medication as needed, but I require full transparency about their behavior to ensure safety for all. Dogs: I can accommodate dogs with minor behavioral challenges, such as leash reactivity or mild anxiety. However, for safety reasons, I cannot accept: Dogs over 50 lbs who are not at least moderately leash-trained. Dogs requiring a muzzle or choke collar in public settings. Dogs with severe aggression or unpredictable behavior. Double-Booking Policy For the safety and well-being of all pets, I do not double-book boarding, daycare, or walks unless all parties have given consent and a meet-and-greet has taken place. If multiple dogs are staying in my home at the same time, a meet-and-greet is required. Even if the dogs get along, they will not be left alone together unless securely crated. Cats and dogs boarding in my home simultaneously will be kept in separate areas with no contact.

“This was my first time using the Rover app and I was very apprehensive in leaving my pup (4+ year old Mini Aussie) for an extended period of time with someone I hadn't met. Nikki was beyond helpful in walking me through the process, scheduling a meet and greet, keeping me updated with pictures and statuses through the weekend and putting my overactive mind at ease. She was true to her word in every sense of the way and I will certainly be contacting her first with all of my future needs. Augie and I are lucky to have found her.”

About: Dogs have been a significant part of my life, holding a special place in my heart. Growing up, my mother was involved in rescuing dogs, and we even took part in fostering. This experience exposed me to dogs of all sizes, ages, and temperaments. I've undergone basic dog training and share my life with a 3-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog named Millie. Prior to Millie, we had a beloved hound dog named Evie, who was a cherished companion for 15 years. My love for dogs spans every age, and I appreciate the unique needs and characteristics that come with each stage of their lives. I currently work from home full-time however, my schedule allows for flexibility through the week day where I can be available for walks, bathroom breaks, playtime, and snuggles. I would be happy to come get your pup out for a long walk before you return home. I would be happy to take your pup to a park to walk or around your neighborhood. I have a dog harness for safe traveling. I could also bring your pet to my home to play with my dog for a playdate. We have a nice fenced-in backyard with plenty of room to run. Our dog is wonderful with other dogs as well- big and small.

About: I've had dogs since I was a child. I've had lots experience with potty training dogs. Many friends and family have trusted me with their pets (dogs, cats, lizards) while they were on vacation all in their own home. I currently have a large fenced in yard that my sheepadoodle loves to run around in and play fetch. All pets will be kept separate from each other during their stay. They will be cuddled and loved as our own! I work part time 2 minutes away from my home and come home around lunch time to let my dog out so I could very well let yours out as well. I have a large fenced in yard, I also have two large crates in our house and a larger cage in our garage to use if needed. Your pet would be kept inside our home and treated as our own.

Sparty had a great time here. The big back yard allowed her beagle nose to explore. The regular photo updates kept this dog "mom" smiling while on my business trip. Sparty cant waitto come back.

You can message your sitter at any time through the app and our support team is available 24/7 by email or chat if you have concerns.

The personalized, in-home nature of pet care through Rover can mean more individual attention for your pet.

Every sitter on Rover has their own routine. Depending on the arrangements you agree on before the stay, a sitter can follow your dog’s regular feeding schedule, provide a comfortable place to sleep, offer companionship, and support their usual exercise and play needs.

97% of sitters in Shields can provide daily exercise during dog boarding stays. Depending on the sitter, their home environment, and your dog’s needs, this may include walks, outdoor play, indoor enrichment activities, or supervised play with compatible dogs. These activities are not automatically included with every booking, so ask the sitter what a typical day looks like.

During the Meet & Greet, discuss your dog’s usual exercise and play routine, whether they can safely interact with other dogs, and any activities or restrictions the sitter should follow. You can also ask the sitter to send photo and message updates during the stay so you can see how your dog is spending their time.

Preparing for drop-off is easy when you have a checklist! To help your dog settle into their Shields home-away-from-home, we recommend packing:

  • Health and safety essentials such as their ID tags, vaccination records, medication, and emergency vet or secondary caregiver contacts.
  • Food and gear such as harnesses, collars, food (portioned by day), and an item that smells like you.
  • Special instructions such as a list of training cues, medical administration needs, or favorite hang-out spots in your Shields.

Tip: You can upload your dog’s routine and medical info directly onto their profile so your sitter always has the details at their fingertips.

Yes, you can find sitters who have experience with handling special pet needs in Shields. On Rover:

  • 92% of sitters can help with special care needs
  • 95% can help with giving oral medications or injections
  • 97% can help with daily exercise

You can also find pet sitters on Rover who accept only one pet at a time, which is ideal for anxious puppies, kittens, or senior pets who move at a gentler pace. Some sitters will also list availability for 24/7 care, also known as constant care, in their profiles.

Use the search filters to narrow down sitters whose specific experience or environment meets your pet's needs. When reaching out to your sitter, outline your pet's care routine and use the Meet & Greet to walk your sitter through your expectations.

You and your Shields sitter can schedule drop-off and pick-up in a way that works best for the both of you—and your dog. Most sitters offer flexible times for drop-off and pick-up but the easiest way to confirm those times will be through in-app messaging. Confirm your arrival time the day of pick-up and drop-off can also help keep the process smooth and organized.

The Rover Guarantee is Rover’s commitment to your peace of mind every time you book. It includes 24/7 customer support, sitter access to advice from qualified veterinary professionals for diagnostic issues, and a reimbursement program for eligible veterinary care in the rare event something goes wrong.

All bookings are backed by the Rover Guarantee, which provides up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care reimbursement.

Every sitter on Rover is required to pass a background check before listing their services. This process confirms their identity and indicates they are not on the Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Public Website or have any disqualifying offenses.

Beyond ID checks, you can review each sitter's star rating, read verified reviews from other pet parents, and see how many repeat clients they have. Every booking is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care. For more details, visit Rover's Trust & Safety page.

While each sitter sets their own vaccine requirements, staying up-to-date on your dog’s vaccines is the best way to be "boarding ready". Vaccinations help create a safe environment for all pets under a sitter’s care.

Many sitters in MI ask that dogs be up to date on core vaccines like the Canine Parvovirus, Canine Distemper, Canine Adenovirus, Bordetella, and Rabies.

By discussing your pet's health history early, you’re adding a layer of confidence for you and your sitter before the booking begins.

If a health concern arises during a stay, your sitter is instructed to contact you and our Trust & Safety team immediately and, if needed, take your dog to the closest veterinarian. Through our Trust & Safety support team, sitters can ask for diagnostic advice from a qualified veterinary professional if your dog is showing signs of possible illness.

For extra peace of mind, you can also prepare an authorization form for your regular vet. An authorization form outlines your preferred method of care and allows your sitter to bring your pet into their regular clinic.

Every qualified booking made on Rover is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes reimbursement for eligible emergency vet care.

Adding another pup to the pack? Most sitters and walkers offer a reduced rate for additional dogs. You’ll find these exact rates listed under the "Services" tab on any sitter's profile. Since every dog is unique, final pricing may vary depending on the level of care required.
