“Words cannot adequately capture how superb James was. I had so much anxiety leaving my babies to take a vacation, but it’s clear I had nothing to worry about with James. He was kind, caring, and attentive to the intricacies of managing my four pets. I’ve had a lot of people pet sit in the past, including friends and family, but nobody has done it better than James. I cannot recommend him highly enough!”

“Lily is absolutely wonderful as a cat sitter. She loves animals, loves our two cats Timber & Smokey, and they clearly love her! She has cared for them multiple times for us for periods ranging from a few days up to weeks. Lily is personable, upbeat, always reliable & responsible, and communicates quickly & clearly. We are always very comfortable knowing she will be there for our cats. I recommend her strongly.”

About: I’ve taken care of dogs and cats of family and friends since I was in my teens, but more extensively in college and since. For 3 years I boarded and sat for three different family friends. I’ve personally helped raise 3 dogs and 2 cats. I’ve even helped herd sheep and tamed alpacas! I work nearly full-time as a server at a restaurant, so Wednesday to Saturday night I’m unavailable for somewhere between 6-9 hours on those days. When I have my off days I’m usually at home or out for a walk. I’m usually efficient with my errands and have extensive free time on off days. My apartment is a one bedroom, so if I’m not playing around the apartment with the pet, I’d want to bring them on a walk or to the park. I have a very comfortable bedroom conducive to nap time, and I live in the heart of Old Port. Whenever I am with pets in my house I am always looking to set up a cozy space for them to relax with blankets, pillows, their favorite toys. I try to make them feel like a proper guest in my home like anyone else. My apartment is always very quiet despite being downtown, but I would hope to find activities we could do in and around Portland to help keep them active and entertained.
About: I have spent my entire life surrounded by animals of all shapes and sizes, and I wouldn't have it any other way! Animals naturally gravitate toward my calm, patient energy, and I treat every guest like a member of my own family. What truly sets me apart is my experience with specialized and complex care. I am the proud owner of a high-energy Tamaskan dog, so I completely thrive with active, high-energy breeds. I love taking dogs on long walks, structured dog park adventures, public socialization outings, and even handling bath trips! Additionally, growing up on a property with racehorses taught me a deep love, respect, and safety-first mindset for large animals. I have also raised over 15 chickens and roosters. Whether you have an athletic pup who needs an intense workout, a multi-pet household, or livestock that need exact farm routines followed, I bring a lifetime of versatile, trustworthy experience to your extended furry family. My schedule is highly adaptable, allowing me to fully commit to your pet's exact daily routine! Because pet care is my primary focus, I have plenty of time throughout the day for active dog walks, park trips, and dedicated drop-in visits. For boarding and overnight care, your pet will receive constant supervision and companionship. I structure my days around the needs of the animals in my care, ensuring that high-energy breeds get their necessary exercise and senior pets stay perfectly on track with their medication and rest schedules. Safety and peace of mind are my absolute top priorities. Growing up around racehorses instilled a strict safety-first mindset in me from an early age, which I apply to every animal I watch. In my home, pets enjoy a calm, secure, and highly comfortable environment where they are treated just like my own. Because I own a high-energy breed, I am incredibly vigilant about environment control, secure doors, and safe socialization. When caring for pets in your home or managing farm routines, I am extremely detail-oriented. I take the time to meticulously learn your specific setup, gates, security measures, and animal dynamics. I also provide clear, consistent communication and photo updates during every single booking so you can relax knowing your pets and property are in expert, loving hands.

About: I’ve been dog-walking and pet sitting for several years now! I love spending time with dogs and am having to go for runs or the beach with them, or just relax at home! I’m a second year medical student, so happy to sit for pets in the evenings, as well as provide breaks during the day! I’m typically most open on the weekends but am open to weekdays as well. I will follow directions closely and respect your home like it is my home! I like to do frequent check-ins and am happy to do a meet and greet beforehand.
About: Hi!! I'm Mia, a student living in Portland, Maine. I grew up with dogs and have cared for family and friends' pets for years, so I'm comfortable with different sizes, energy levels, and routines. I have hands-on experience giving dogs insulin injections, so if your pup is diabetic, I can stick to their schedule and keep an eye on how they're doing. I also have a cat with medical issues of my own, so I understand how much patience and attention a pet with health needs takes. I send photo and text updates after every visit, so you'll always know how your pet is doing. With my current schedule I prefer drop-ins and walks, but I'm open to boarding, house sitting, or anything else you need. • Mon/Wed/Fri: afternoons and evenings (after about 1 PM) • Tue/Thu: lunchtime walks and drop-ins • Sat/Sun: wide open for walks, drop-ins, and overnights But can be flexible Walks and drop-ins (in your home) • I'll go over your pet's routine, feeding, meds, and emergency contacts at a meet-and-greet before the first visit. • Dogs stay leashed on walks, and I use your preferred collar, harness, and route. I don't let them off-leash or approach unfamiliar dogs unless you've okayed it. • I carry waste bags and water, and I'm careful about ice, heat, and busy roads, especially in Portland's winters. • I lock up when I leave, and I never share your address or key details. • I send a photo and text after every visit, and I'll tell you right away if something seems off. • I follow your vet's feeding and medication instructions exactly, and I log doses and times for pets on insulin or other meds.
About: Hey there! I'm Evan, a proud dog dad to Ollie and Kylo. With a flexible work-from-home schedule, I can easily accommodate your pup's daycare, drop-in and walking needs at your convenience. I have a big yard for the dogs to play outside (supervised), great trails for walking/running and plenty of room inside for your furry friend to hang and relax. Your furry friend will enjoy fun, safe, and engaging walks, just like my own dogs do. Let's give your pup the best walking experience! Pet care is a fundamental part of my daily routine. As a dog dad to Ollie and Kylo, I ensure they receive plenty of exercise, mental stimulation, and affection every day. My work-from-home schedule allows me to integrate their walks, playtime, and grooming into my day seamlessly. Each morning and evening, we go for walks to keep them healthy and happy as well as playing out in the yard. In my home, I provide a nurturing and stimulating environment for Ollie and Kylo by ensuring they have a consistent routine that includes regular exercise, balanced meals, and plenty of affection. I focus on maintaining a safe and clean living space, regularly grooming them, and keeping their toys and bedding fresh. When caring for pets in my clients' homes, I prioritize understanding each pet's unique needs and routines. I follow any specific instructions provided by the owners, ensuring their pets receive the same level of care and attention they would at home. This includes feeding them according to their schedule, taking them for walks or play sessions, and maintaining any training or behavioral routines. I also make sure to keep the client's home clean and secure, leaving detailed updates on their pet's activities and well-being. My goal is to provide peace of mind to pet owners, knowing their beloved pets are in safe and caring hands.
About: I’ve grown up with as many pets as you can imagine (cats, dogs, hamsters, guinea pigs, fish, frogs, hermit crabs, etc). I have an immense love for all animals and have been lucky enough to recently adopt a sweet and cuddly puppy with my boyfriend Jack. I have always lot of experience looking after pets of all shapes and sizes (from bunnies to dogs and cats), and have been a pet sitter for friends and family for as long as I can remember. I will love your furry companion like my own pet! Booking a session with me means your pet will get all the cuddles and walkies and attention their heart desires :) I am currently in dental school so my week day schedule is pretty busy as I am seeing patients 8am-5pm during the week. However, my Friday, Saturday and Sunday availability is much more flexible as I am often home relaxing with my own puppy and taking him on walks! If you’re looking for a weekend sitter or some more physical exercise for your furry friend on the weekends, I’m your gal :) I do not have a fenced in yard but the townhouse style apartment I live in has a private entrance making potty breaks a breeze as well as a dog park located right in the complex! It is usually empty so if you’re okay with it, our pups could go run and play together! My boyfriend Jack and I absolutely love animals and especially dogs and are so excited to meet your companion :))
About: I had the honor of having pets my whole life... dogs and cats. From a very young age my mother was always rescuing cats and dogs. They were an extension of our family. The seed was planted early and has only grown into a passion, training and caring for pets. I am currently available for providing in home pet care. I have a very flexible schedule. Available for staying over so your pet(s) can be comfortable in their own home and drop in visits/walks. I am a massage therapist and I don't work long hours so it allows for flexibility. At this time I don't have the space to host your pets. My roommates cats would not be to happy with that. I can travel to your home.
About: I have pet sat for neighbors, friends and family for six years where I was responsible for walking and feeding their animals. I grew up with an Australian Shepherd and have been walking dogs since I was 10. I am an Elementary School Teacher so I am looking for something part time or full time for the summer months. I am also looking to continue my services when the school year starts in September. I currently have two cats of my own who get along very well with other animals. My parents dog stays with me as well on some weekends. I have a large park near my apartment and my parents dog really enjoys running around there. I am an elementary school teacher, so I will be available mostly full time during the summer months and then I will transition into a part time schedule when school starts back up in the fall. I have two cats of my own, so your pet will have fur friends to play with when/ if they stay at my home. Right next to my home I have a large park that residents take their pets to. I would also love to take your pet to a nearby dog park, that way they can socialize in a safe space!

About: Hi there! I grew up on a farm in Maine surrounded by animals, so caring for dogs (and just about every other kind of pet!) has always been a natural part of my life. From playful puppies to gentle seniors, I’ve had experience with dogs of all breeds, sizes, and temperaments. During my childhood, there was never a time when I didn't have at least three dogs in the house, so I know how to handle multiple pets and their unique personalities. Over the years, I’ve helped friends and family with dog walking, sitting, and general care, and I treat every pup as if they were my own. Whether your dog loves long walks, quiet cuddles, or energetic playtime, I make sure they feel safe, happy, and loved while you’re away. I know Portland well and enjoy exploring its many dog-friendly parks and trails — perfect for keeping your pup active and entertained. I’m also looking to earn some extra income doing something I genuinely love: spending time outdoors with amazing four-legged friends! I’d love the chance to meet you and your dog and help make your life a little easier. I work as a fellow with a hybrid schedule, so my week has plenty of flexibility for walks, visits, and overnight stays. I’m always remote on Fridays, which makes long weekends easy for me to accommodate. I have two cats of my own that are not fond of sharing space with other animals, especially dogs. Therefore, I am currently unable to offer in-home boarding services.

Pet parents share their Rover experiences - Cumberland Center
Matthew did a great job with our dogs. He took them out on walks and took great pictures for us to see. He also gave them treats and was good to them. He had 3 dogs to deal with over the time and they all seemed happy with him. Great dog sitter who I would definitely use again!

Frequently asked questions about Rover
Rover is the largest marketplace for local pet care. Whether you're looking for pet sitters, dog walkers, or house sitters who specialize in pet sitting, you can narrow your search by entering your ZIP code to find sitters within walking distance in your neighborhood.
You and your sitter can agree on a care schedule that fits your pet’s routine and the sitter’s availability. Pet Sitting can be booked as a one-time or recurring drop-in visit. If you need overnight care or dog walks, you may also be able to book House Sitting or Dog Walking through Rover with the same sitter, provided they offer those services.
Before booking, confirm:
- the timing, length, and frequency of visits;
- the care instructions the sitter should follow;
- which parts of your pet’s usual routine should be prioritized;
- how often you would like to receive messages, photos, or other updates.
Not every sitter offers the same services, availability, or booking options. Review their profile and discuss the care you need through Rover before booking each service.
If you would like updates while you’re away, you can discuss with your sitter how many or how frequent you’d like those updates to be. The Rover app allows sitters to send photos, videos, and messages about your pet, including how many pee or poop breaks occurred. You can message your sitter at any time through the app and our support team is available 24/7 by email or chat if you have concerns.
The personalized, in-home nature of pet care through Rover can mean more individual attention for your pet.
Many pet parents provide a spare key or arrange a lockbox. You can also exchange keys during the Meet & Greet and show your walker how to use digital fobs or personalized codes. It helps to arrange access to your home, from spare keys to concierge introductions, before pet care begins.
If you live in an apartment or condo, don’t forget to discuss details like buzzer access, codes, or elevator etiquette. These details can help a pet sitter feel more comfortable going in and out of your building.
Every sitter on Rover is required to pass a background check before listing their services. This process confirms their identity and indicates they are not on the Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Public Website or have any disqualifying offenses.
Beyond ID checks, you can review each sitter's star rating, read verified reviews from other pet parents, and see how many repeat clients they have. Every booking is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care. For more details, visit .

Yes, you can find sitters who have experience administering medication or managing dietary requirements. You can also find pet sitters who accept only one pet at a time, which is ideal for anxious puppies or senior pets who move at a gentler pace. Some sitters will also list availability for 24/7 care, also known as constant care, in their profiles.
Use the search filters to narrow down sitters whose specific experience or environment meets your pet's needs. When reaching out to your sitter, outline your pet's care routine and request a Meet & Greet to walk your sitter through your expectations.
A Meet & Greet is a casual meeting to vet potential sitters and communicate care needs for peace of mind before a booking begins. Only sitters who have never booked with you before can schedule a Meet & Greet on Rover; however, you are welcome to coordinate one in Rover messages with sitters you have previously booked. This can be helpful if you have a new pet or routine you want to go over with your sitter.
Meet & Greets can take place in person or virtually. If you are booking with a sitter for the first time, we recommend in-person Meet & Greets to get a clearer sense of how your sitter interacts with your pet or the new environment.
During the Meet & Greet, you will have a chance to walk through your pet's routine, medical needs, and unique quirks. Take the time to ask your sitter questions about their skills and expertise, and make sure the fit feels right for everyone. Meet & Greets are a great way to prepare your pet and sitter for longer stays or first-time bookings. Read our tips for your first .
