Drumroll please! We have dug into Rover’s database of over a million pet owners to uncover which dog and cat breeds are trending, including the most popular dog and cat breeds in Madrid and all across Europe.
Some breeds are recurring favorites, while others are just starting to make waves – these are the dogs and cats that rose steeply in popularity in 2023, becoming the top trending breeds for their cities. Is your pet’s breed among them?
As you will see, when it comes to dogs, the most common breed is in fact a mixed breed, with a few more perennial favorites ranking high in this dog-friendly city in central Spain.
It’s not just about dogs though! We’ve also racked up the stats for cats to see which breeds are most common and which are on the up. You may just be surprised! As the world’s largest network of dog walkers and pet sitters, Rover has heard of just about every breed, but we always see something unexpected on these lists! See if you agree with us.

For the most part the capital city of Spain keeps it classic when it comes to popular dog breeds, with a mix of small and medium-sized favorites. Right up the top of the table we have the vivacious Yorkshire Terrier, instantly recognizable with its silky blue and tan coat. With their compact size, hypoallergenic coat and loyal temperament, they make a popular city pet the world over. On the smaller side, we also see our long and low friend the Dachshund, who make great apartment dogs as long as they get a chance to follow their nose and explore with a couple of vigorous walks per day. Other small but perfectly formed favorites in the top 10 include the Chihuahua, Bichon Frisé and Pomeranian.
Madrid is known for its elegant boulevards and pretty parks and there are plenty of places to take your pal out for a good walk. This is good news for the more energetic breeds on this list like the Labrador and Golden Retrievers and the energetic herder, the Border Collie. Same goes for the sparky Beagle, who loves the opportunity to exercise its keen hound instincts!
