Cats do many weird things, from zooming around late at night to squeezing in small boxes. One more quirky behavior is when cats stand up in front of you. Cats can easily stand on their hind legs, even though it’s not their typical stance, but what makes a cat want to stand up in front of you? There are many reasons why they stand. Some cats stand up during petting, some during a confrontation, and some even stand up while communicating with their pet parent.
Hind leg standing is entirely normal in most cats. Meaghan Thomas, DVM, a veterinarian at East Ridge Animal Hospital, says cats can stand on two legs, but it doesn’t often happen since it’s unnatural for them. “Usually, it’s in response to a threat,” she says. However, she adds that if your cat is standing, it can be reactionary or playful.
Why Do Cats Stand Up?
Dr. Thomas says since standing is not a natural stance, something usually prompts it. She says cats are predators, so their fight response is elevated. Like any species in nature, they will make themselves seem as big as possible in response to a threat. Although every cat and every situation will be a little different, below are various reasons they might stand up.
- Stretching out: Your cat might stand up on their hind legs to stretch their limbs for physical comfort.
- Scoping out potential threats: Cats’ natural ancestral instincts sometimes kick in. If they perceive a potential threat, they might stand up on their hind legs to get a better view or make themselves look more intimidating.
- Apprehensive curiosity: Cats are known for being curious creatures. If they want more information, they might stand on two legs to get a better look.
- Reaching up for a treat: Just like every animal, cats are food motivated. And if they see you holding a treat, they will likely stand on two legs—or even jump up—to try to capture the treat.
- Wanting your attention: If your feline feels needy or playful, they might stand up before you to get your attention. It’s the best way for them not to go unnoticed.
- Asking for affection or pets: Your cat might stand on two legs to ask you for love, cuddles, and pets. This is an excellent way for them to communicate what they want or need.
- Excitement: Cats are funny, excitable, and playful. When they get excited, they might suddenly express that excitement by standing up.
Are There Any Physical Reasons For A Cat to Stand Up?
Although most cats who stand up on their hind legs aren’t doing it for any particular physical reason, Munchkin cats are known for standing on their hind legs more often than others. This is because they have short, stubby legs and can sit on their hind legs while they balance their body perfectly upright.
Additionally, cats with radial agenesis or radial hypoplasia (twisted front legs) might be unable to use their front paws. This could cause them to stand on their hind legs more often. Remember: hind leg standing isn’t usually a sign of unexpected health issues.
Should I Be Concerned If My Cat Stands Up Frequently?
There don’t seem to be any underlying health problems linked to two-legged standing in cats. It’s usually just a sign of your cat wanting love and attention. However, Dr. Thomas explains that injuries, osteoarthritis, and previous surgeries can all limit mobility.
If your cat is acting confrontational toward you or if you have multiple cats fighting and acting aggressively, it may be time to consult a pet trainer or behaviorist for advice.
Observing and keeping note of your cat’s behavior and interactions with other pets is important. Try to learn their body language and signals. And always feel comfortable reaching out for help and advice from your veterinarian or other professional pet behaviorists.
