Caring for Your Cat

Considering a road trip with your cat? Traveling with felines in tow can be logistically challenging. But bathroom breaks, at least, don’t have to be an issue, thanks to a wide range of new travel litter boxes on the market. There are foldable, odor-proof, and heavy-duty options—so the only tricky part is making an educated guess about what will feel like home away from home to your kitty.

Different models of travel litter box cater to different needs. There are portable litter boxes made of stiff, waterproof fabric that can be folded for easy storage, and there are hardier collapsable plastic models that are good options for larger cats. Many of the fabric models come with zippers to help contain the mess, and some come bundled with accessories to help with clean-up.

When you’re shopping for a travel litter box, it’s a good idea to consider your cat’s particularities. (And we know your cat has some because, well, they’re a cat.) Some cats don’t mind using a litter box out in the open, while others demand some privacy. There are a few options out there with covers, and this could be the one for you if your cat has a shy bladder.

If you cat prefers some space to stretch out, some of the smaller foldable options may not work for you—you’ll want to focus on the larger tub-style options. Lastly, if you have a kitten or senior kitty, you may have to consider ease of use (low walls are handy). We’ve rounded up several models to compare as you shop for the perfect portable litter box.

Best Travel Litter Box for the Shy Kitty

Collapsible Portable Cat Litter Box

Collapsible Portable Cat Litter Box

This travel litter box was designed with your shy cats in mind. The “sun roof” opens to allow your cat to go in and out (just the way they would prefer), but it still gives them the privacy that some cats demand when taking care of business. The zipper side keeps the litter contained and helps with clean-up.

This carrier has a few pockets for cat litter accessories (think scoop and disposable bags), and is 100% waterproof to prevent leaks. It also has strong handles to accommodate up to 30 pounds of cat litter.

Key Features:

  • Sun roof and high sides are good for shy kitties
  • Easy to contain the mess
  • Waterproof

To Consider:

  • Doesn’t fold as small as some of the other options
