Does your dog’s breed top the charts? Every year we dig into Rover’s database of over a million pet owners to uncover which kinds of dogs are trending across the world.
Some breeds crop up year after year (we’re looking at you adorable Labradors), while others have only become popular, or popular again, more recently. As you will read, mixed breeds in fact top the list, with tried and true favorites like the Yorkshire Terrier and Border Collie also ranking highly.
In buzzy, culture-filled Barcelona, the assortment of trending dogs is as eclectic as the city’s architecture! There are giant breeds, tiny ‘purse’ dogs, and everything in between! See how many of the top trending breeds you know.
As the world’s largest network of dog walkers and pet sitters, Rover has heard of just about every pet breed and crossbreed there is, but there is always something in these results that surprises us too. Let’s take a deep-dive into the numbers!

Right up top we have mixed breeds, followed by two toy- or small-sized favorites, the Dachshund and the Yorkshire Terrier. Perennial popular breeds Labrador and Golden Retrievers also have a place high up in the ranking. Prazsky Krysarik
Beagle-Harrier
Pyrenean Mastiff
Spanish Mastiff
Maltese
Bull Terrier
Australian Shepherd
English Setter
Toy Poodle
American Bulldog
The list of trending breeds is really as varied and interesting as the city itself. Right at the top we have the Prazsky Krysarik or ‘Prague Ratter’. If its size is minuscule (the adult weight maxes out at 3.5 kilos and can be as little as 1.5 kilos), its appeal is huge thanks to its big, endearing eyes, characterful bat-like ears and lively, affectionate character. Their small size makes them ideal apartment dogs, while they are also known to be less vocal than some other smaller breeds.
Those who are not hunting hound aficionados could be forgiven for confusing the Beagle and Harrier, both have similar tricolor markings and sweet expressions, but Harriers are significantly larger and more muscular. The Beagle-Harrier, second most trending on our list, is somewhere in between the two! All three breeds are much loved for their affectionate, playful and loving nature.
Following global trends, we also see an uptick in popularity for some giant breeds, such as the centuries-old Pyrenean Mastiff; known for her gentle, loving manner, as well as the impressive Spanish Mastiff, a highly intelligent dog whose loyal protective instinct requires a firm and loving trainer from the start.
