Hands down, Guinevere has been the best dog sitter we’ve ever had. She responded in a very timely manner, kept us updated on how our three dogs were doing and sent many pictures. Two of our dogs normally go on a hunger strike when we leave, but this was no problem with Guinevere there. She even won over our crabby dog! House was left cleaner than when we left. We’re excited to book with Guinevere again in the near future.

Rebecca has been utterly amazing with our pack of pups. She spent a week with my three Chihuahuas and Pomeranian and seemed unfazed by their craziness. I loved that she gave them so much attention and spent so much time with them. When we arrived home, our house was spotless and our dogs were happy 😊 She was truly the perfect pet sitter. 💖

I am so happy I reached out through Rover to Joshua. I have two large dogs and one of them has endless energy, two large cats, a leopard gecko and 10 chickens. Kind of last minute, I decided to take a quick weekend trip. My younger dog is a handful and I was worried that I would not find the person to understand and care for my puppy and all the others. Then I contacted Joshua. Punctual, polite, knowledgeable about breeds and specifics and best of all!?!? Finn likes him. I had a wonderful trip. Joshua sent photos and videos and kept me updated on how everything was at home. He stayed at my home and also hous sat for me. Joshua kept the house the way I keep it. He made ire to collect my mail and some medicine that was accidentally shipped and needed to be refrigerated. I would highly recommend Joshua for both house sitting and keeping a bunch af what most people would refer to as a group of large animals. Thank you Joshua!!!

Khalaya is a very sweet person and took excellent care of my two dogs and cat. This was the first time I've hired someone to come take care of my animals, but she put me at ease when I met her. My dogs were excited to meet her and I felt comfortable leaving them with her for the weekend. She sent me pictures and a video of them while we were gone and they looked relaxed. I'm surprised my cat came out to meet her, but there's photographic evidence that she did! When we returned, our animals were happy and well cared for. They were happy to see us, but there is no doubt in my mind that they enjoyed getting tons of attention while we were away. I would absolutely have her back the next time we travel! Thank you Khalaya!

Crystal was absolutely outstanding during her four-night stay caring for my dog, fish, shrimp, and home. My dog required extra attention—he had to wear a cone and needed regular eye drops—and Crystal handled it all with patience, care, and total competence. It gave me real peace of mind knowing he was in such capable hands. She also went the extra mile to reposition my battery-operated Ring camera so I could watch him napping around the house. On top of that, Crystal cared for my four aquariums (not a small job!) and followed my detailed list of instructions perfectly. Everything was clean, organized, and exactly as I left it. Beyond her reliability, Crystal is simply a joy to work with—sweet, funny, and clearly a true animal lover. It’s obvious she genuinely cares about the pets she looks after. I highly recommend Crystal without hesitation. She went above and beyond, and I would absolutely trust her again.

About: Hi! My name is Aniya, and I've been around dogs my entire life. I grew up with two dogs of my own, which taught me from an early age the importance of patience, responsibility, and providing loving care to our furry family members. Over the years, I've had experience caring for both young, energetic puppies and senior dogs who require a gentler, more attentive approach. I'm comfortable adapting to each dog's unique personality, routine, and needs to help them feel safe, happy, and comfortable while you're away. I also have experience caring for a dog with epilepsy and allergies, so I understand the importance of following care instructions carefully, administering medications when needed, and being attentive to changes in a dog's behavior or health. Animals have always held a special place in my heart, and I genuinely love spending time with them. Whether your pup enjoys long walks, playtime, belly rubs, or simply having a companion nearby, I'll make sure they receive plenty of love, attention, and care. My goal is to treat every dog as if they were my own and give you peace of mind knowing they're in good hands. I am a licensed esthetician and work on a commission-based schedule, which allows me to have a great deal of flexibility. As long as I am given at least one week's notice for requested dates and times, I can typically accommodate your pet care needs. I pride myself on being reliable, communicative, and committed to providing the best possible care for your pets. Your dog's comfort and safety are my top priorities. I live in a quiet townhouse community with plenty of open green space for walks, potty breaks, and outdoor time. While the area is not fenced, all outdoor activities will be closely supervised and dogs will remain safely leashed at all times. My home is pet-friendly, calm, and free of other pets, allowing your dog to receive my full attention without the stress of unfamiliar animals. I live with my mom and a male roommate, and all members of the household are adults but I will be the only person caring for your pup in the household. There are no children in the home, creating a peaceful environment where your pup can relax and feel comfortable. Whether your dog enjoys playtime, walks, cuddles, or simply a cozy place to unwind, I'll provide plenty of love, attention, and care to help them feel right at home while you're away.

About: I have taken care of dogs and all ages in sizes ranging from eight weeks to 15 years and from a Shih Tzu to a German Shepherd. I made my dog homemade food and have administered various different kinds of medication from pill form to powder crushed up in some food. I have also hand fed an elderly dog. I have dogs at many times over the course of several years for a family with three dogs and four cats two of those cats being Maine coons I ran Track in high school and always love to maintain a active lifestyle with walking/running and a dog is always a lovely companion for that. I believe that pets should be treated like family and when I’m with your pet, I will always treat them like my family. I also take walking safety very important. Never walking on busy roads and preferred to walk on trails or at minimum side roads where there’s not a lot of cars.

About: For the past 6 years, I’ve had the pleasure of caring for dogs and cats of all sizes, breeds, and personalities. I’ve cared for everything from small, playful pups to large dogs, as well as trained K9s, so I’m comfortable handling pets with different needs, energy levels, and routines. I understand how important it is to find someone you can trust with your pets, and I treat every animal as if they were my own. I’m attentive to their individual routines and personalities and always make sure they receive plenty of love, attention, exercise, and care while you’re away. My goal is for both you and your pets to feel happy, comfortable, and confident while they’re in my care! My schedule is flexible and pet care fits easily into my routine! I’m currently substitute teaching while I search for my next permanent opportunity, so I’m typically away from home on weekdays from about 7 AM–3 PM. I’m available before and after school for walks, drop-ins, and care, and I have much more flexibility on weekends. I’m happy to work with your pet’s routine and make sure they get plenty of attention, exercise, and love while you’re away. I prefer caring for pets in their own homes, where they can stay in a familiar environment and maintain the routines they’re already comfortable with. I have two dogs of my own, and because one doesn’t always get along with other pets, I feel that in-home care is the best option for keeping everyone safe and comfortable. I’ll follow your instructions closely, provide plenty of love and attention, and treat your home and pets with the same care and respect I would want for my own.

This was our first home stay with Liz, and she was fantastic with our pup Winnie! She is super caring, great at tiring out our energetic girl, very communicative and sent lots of photo and video updates throughout our trip. Liz was also gracious enough to bring in our mail and water our plants, and generally take great care of our home in our absence. We are very happy Winnie fell in love with Liz and had a wonderful time while we were gone, and we’d highly recommend Liz to anyone looking for an excellent pet caregiver. We will certainly be booking Liz for future Winnie care ☺️

I couldn’t have asked for a better house / pet sitter! I was out of state visiting family for the weekend, and having someone so reliable and attentive in my home gave me total peace of mind. Knowing both my babies (cat and dog) were so well cared for allowed me to truly relax and enjoy my trip without a worry. I loved receiving regular updates and photos throughout the weekend—it was nice to see my pets happy and comfortable in their own home while I was away. My home was left in wonderful shape, and both of my pets were clearly loved and spoiled. This is the first time I have used Rover for pet sitting and it worked out well. I will book again if needed and highly recommend her for services anyone looking for caring and trustworthy pet care!

I felt so fortunate to have Wayne look after my dog, Laney at my rather remote Airbnb, while I attended to a wedding. We had a meet and greet days before and Laney gave him an amazing greeting. Dogs are such a great judge of character. He sent me photos and updates and I knew my dog was in good hands. I’d give him 10 stars.

FAQs for House Sitting - Durham

Frequently asked questions about Rover

The average cost for House Sitting in Durham on Rover is $52.29 per night (as of September 2026). However, all sitters set their own rates based on experience, location, and availability.

Rover makes budgeting the cost of House Sitting easy. As long as your dates and pet profiles are correct, the price you see before you book is the same price you pay for House Sitting. For more information on service fees, click here .

As of September 2026, there are 2,175 sitters on Rover offering House Sitting across Durham. Enter your ZIP code to see which available sitters are closest to your home.

Beyond belly rubs and feeding schedules, a house sitter’s presence may provide an additional layer of security for your home. However, you will need to arrange overnight stays and other household tasks with your sitter when reaching out to them. Not all sitters offer the same services. Common household tasks you can negotiate include:

  • Mail & deliveries: Collecting letters and packages so they don't pile up.
  • Plant care: Keeping your indoor or outdoor garden hydrated.
  • Trash & recycling: Taking trash cans to the curb on scheduled pickup days.
  • Home security: Sitters can stay overnight to keep your home occupied.

The best way to align on expectations is during your free Meet & Greet. Use this time to provide a "home cheat sheet" that includes your preferred Durham walking routes, the location of your favorite pet store, and any specific quirks about your home’s security or appliances.

It’s helpful to think of house sitting as a "home base" service. Most sitters in Durham maintain their normal daily routines, like running errands or heading to the office, meaning your pet should be comfortable being alone for a few hours at a time. If your pet needs a little extra company, here is how to find the perfect match:

  • Look for "WFH" sitters: Many sitters mention "Work from Home" on their profile to indicate they’ll be present for the majority of the day.
  • Update your pet’s profile: Write down how long your pet can comfortably be left alone. This helps sitters quickly determine if their schedule aligns with your needs.
  • Communicate 24/7 needs: Standard house sitting usually doesn't include constant supervision. If your pet requires round-the-clock care, be sure to discuss this upfront.

Tip: Use the Meet & Greet to confirm a sitter's typical "away" windows. Transparency ensures your pet stays happy and your sitter can plan their day effectively!

Key handling is entirely up to you and your sitter to agree on during the Meet & Greet or in the Rover app. Most pet parents in Durham choose to hand over a spare key or digital fob in person, while others arrange a lockbox or unique access code. Don't forget to discuss key returns as well!

The Rover Guarantee is Rover’s commitment to your peace of mind every time you book. It includes 24/7 customer support, sitter access to advice from qualified veterinary professionals for diagnostic issues, and a reimbursement program for eligible veterinary care in the rare event something goes wrong.

All bookings are backed by the Rover Guarantee , which provides up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care reimbursement.

Every sitter on Rover is required to pass a background check before listing their services. This process confirms their identity and indicates they are not on the Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Public Website or have any disqualifying offenses.

Beyond ID checks, you can review each sitter's star rating, read verified reviews from other pet parents, and see how many repeat clients they have. Every booking is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes up to $25,000 in eligible veterinary care. For more details, visit Rover's Trust & Safety page .

If a health concern arises during a stay, your sitter is instructed to contact you and our Trust & Safety team immediately and, if needed, take your pet to the closest veterinarian. Through our Trust & Safety support team, sitters can ask for diagnostic advice from a qualified veterinary professional if your pet is showing signs of possible illness.

For extra peace of mind, you can also prepare an authorization form for your regular vet. An authorization form outlines your preferred method of care and allows your sitter to bring your pet into their regular clinic.

Every qualified booking made on Rover is backed by the Rover Guarantee, which includes reimbursement for eligible emergency vet care.

A Meet & Greet is a short introductory meeting between you, your pet, and a sitter. It can take place in person or virtually, although we recommend in-person so that your pet can get to know your sitter or the new environment. During the Meet & Greet, you will have a chance to walk through your pet's routine, medical needs, and unique quirks. Take the time to ask your sitter questions about their skills and expertise, and make sure the fit feels right for everyone. Most pet parents and sitters on Rover welcome Meet & Greets because the process can give confidence and peace of mind for service experiences, especially for longer stays or first-time bookings.

Sitters on Rover set their own cancellation policy, which you can find on their profile under their calendar availability.

Cancelling before a booking begins and before the sitter's cutoff time qualifies you for a full refund. Same-day cancellations for walks, day care, and drop-ins follow the full refund policy. Otherwise, for dog boarding and house sitting, you will receive a 50% refund for the first seven days of the booking and a 100% refund for the remaining days when you cancel the same day a booking should begin.

If your sitter needs to cancel within seven days of the booking's start date, then our reservation protection will kick in. This means our support team works with you to find a replacement sitter.

Yes, you can find sitters who have experience with handling special pet needs in Durham. On Rover:

  • 94% of sitters can help with special care needs
  • 95% can help with giving oral medications or injections
  • 96% can help with daily exercise

You can also find pet sitters on Rover who accept only one pet at a time, which is ideal for anxious puppies, kittens, or senior pets who move at a gentler pace. Some sitters will also list availability for 24/7 care, also known as constant care, in their profiles.

Use the search filters to narrow down sitters whose specific experience or environment meets your pet's needs. When reaching out to your sitter, outline your pet's care routine and use the Meet & Greet to walk your sitter through your expectations.
