Cat furniture specially designed for small spaces will delight your kitty without cramping your style or cluttering up your home. Our survey of cat trees, cat hammocks, cat beds, litter boxes, and litter enclosures turned up some sleek cat furniture for apartments.

The idea, of course, is to give your cat some nifty places to lounge, play, sleep, and use their litter boxes without having your personal space look like a pet supply store. Keep an eye out for streamlined designs and easy-to-maintain materials that will hold up to wear. If you have a kitty who loves to scratch, you might want to avoid products with carpeting on them. Carpet shreds easily and sure can make a quick mess of your house. Sisal rope might be a better option for super-scratchers because it holds up longer and is easy to replace if it gets too shredded and messy.

If your kitty likes perusing their world from very high places, a tall tree or wall shelves might be a good addition to your home. Conversely, if your cat is more about the cozy than being on top of the world, you might opt for something smaller with good spots for chilling and hiding.

And, of course, make sure the furniture and items you use to furnish your space are safe for your kitty, with no looped strings (think blinds and drapes), reachable electrical cords (think plugs), or plants poisonous to cats.

Now, let’s go shopping!

The Best Cat Trees for Apartments

A cat tree is the essential piece of cat furniture for apartments. A good cat tree includes a scratchable base, a sheltered napping area, and some open platforms that give the cat a good view of the outdoors or the rest of the home. A great cat tree will stack all of this functionality onto a small but stable base. We found three trees that fit the bill—which also blend in with modern and contemporary decor. A high-quality tree will stand up to your cat’s play for several years—so you won’t have to chuck broken cat trees every year.

Vesper High Base Modern Cat Tree

Vesper cat tree for apartments

Over four feet high, this modern and minimalist cat tree comes in several color combos, including black and tan, walnut, and oak. Sisal-wrapped legs provide multiple scratching opportunities, and three platform perches, each with a skid-resistant topper, provide for endless non-skid jumping and pouncing. A cozy cubby to nap in and a dangling ball toy both sweeten the deal. The base is a space-saving 22 x 22 inches.

PETEPELA Adjustable Floor to Ceiling 5-Tier Cat Tree

PETEPELA Adjustable Floor to Ceiling 5-Tier Cat Tree

A great choice for small spaces, this cat tree is easy to install and doesn’t take up a ton of room. It has a sturdy base and the top is kept from tipping by creating tension with an extension that secures the tree to your ceiling. It is adjustable, from 95 to 107 inches, so will fit most average homes. An added bonus is that this cat tree weighs just under 20 pounds, so if you’re regularly on the move, it’s easy to pack up and take along with you.

FEANDREA Cat Tree and End Table

FEANDREA Cat Tree and End Table

This amazing little piece of furniture is a cat tree, scratching post, hidey bed, and end table all in one. It has a modern rustic vibe and its petite dimensions (23.2 x 14.2 x 26.4 inches) mean it can easily fit in a living room as an end table or in a bedroom as a side table. It weighs just over 20 pounds, so is easy to move around if you like to reorganize often.

Tuft and Paw Grove Cat Tower (Verified Review)

Tuft and Paw Grove Cat Tower

A cat perch and bed in one, this gorgeous cat tower attempts to make up for a jaw-dropping price tag ($499 for the shorter 24” model, and $599 for the 41” style) with cat-friendly form and function and a clean, design-forward look.

A fleece-lined, high-walled bed at the base is a cozy nook for cat napping kitties; another fleece-lined pad makes up a generously-sized perch at the top (for lounging, reclining, or just watching the world go by).

Overall, we liked the beautiful design; the piece does not immediately register as “cat furniture.” And as cat furniture goes, it’s above-average quality, constructed of real plywood (as opposed to cheap particle or fiber board). And it’s available in different finishes (natural or grey) and sizes depending on your tastes and needs.

We weren’t thrilled that it arrives disassembled, but after about 20 minutes of work, we had it assembled. Screw holes visible in the bed area detract a little from the clean, flush look.

If you can overlook these details, price isn’t an issue, and you’re as finicky as a cat about the things you like, this multipurpose cat tower might just be your next Instagram post to go viral.

Cat Bed Furniture for Apartments

Cat beds don’t have to look like a boring fleece oval (though we like a few that do). Your cat is likely to enjoy one of the new felted wool pods or a pet bed that mimics your sofa.

Earthtone Solutions Cozy Felted Wool Cat Cave

This elegant felted wool cat “cave” is the perfect apartment furniture for cats who like to curl up and get cozy. These beds are handmade in Nepal using wool from New Zealand. You can also flatten it and let your cat use it as a thick, snuggly mat instead. We tested out the similar Meowfia model, which made delightful apartment furniture and pleased our cats too.

KindTail Collapsible Bed and Crate

KindTail Collapsible Bed and Crate

This super cute little bed would be great for a home with a more boho vibe. Doubling as a crate, it’s also ideal for anyone who is looking for a piece of cat apartment furniture that’s useful in more than one way. Both the crate and the sleeping pad are easily washable — in case you have a messy kitty—and collapsible if you ever need to store it away. And being small in size (21 x 16 x 16.5 inches), it serves as a pleasant compliment to your decor, not a focal point.

If you’re going to devote space on your apartment floor, table, or desk to cat furniture, you can’t go wrong with this bed in terms of contemporary style and good looks. The reviews are stellar. Though the bottom of the bed is not thick, people report that their cats love the support of the big side bolsters. The shaggy outside cover is removable and machine washable. The 23 x 23-inch small bed should work for most cats, but if your kitty is a sprawler, try a medium.

Litter Covers and Litter Box Furniture for Apartments

Nobody wants to see or smell the litter box, but it can be tough to get away from when you and your cat are sharing a small apartment. We think these enclosures and covered boxes that look like regular furniture can help.
