On the longstanding advice that it’s best to dress in layers, we thought we’d pick some out for the pups this chilly season. This list of the best fleece dog coats and fleece jackets is made for our short-furred friends—and all those pups who need some extra help keeping warm when they’re out frolicking.

Just like fleece layers for humans, dog fleece coats and jackets are a sensible staple for keeping a pup at a comfortable temperature. You’ll see some styles here resembling dog sweaters and dog coats that are better for cooler temperatures, while others are lighter and made for repelling wind and rain.

To get the coziest fit possible, we recommend more or less ignoring weight ranges and instead taking your dog’s measurements before you buy—it’s saved us a lot of hassle in returns.

Best for Small Dogs: Gooby Pullover Fleece Vest

Gooby Pullover Fleece Vest

Gooby Pullover Fleece Vest

A fleece vest and harness all in one make this a smart choice for small dogs who can’t be walked on a collar.

Find on Amazon

We think Gooby is an excellent brand for small dogs—we’ve had lots of luck with their harnesses—and this snuggly fleece coat in particular is a nice fit for little pups. It comes in sizes suitable for dogs from 4 to 23 pounds, and it’s available in a variety of solid and two-tone colors. To put it on, you’ll slide the stretchy fleece over your dog’s head, then place their front legs through the armholes.

We especially like that it comes with an attached D-ring for leashes, so you can avoid the hassle of trying to fit a harness underneath it (unless you have an escape artist on your hands). That’s a nice touch, since lots of little breeds can’t be walked on a collar due to the pressure a collar puts on their trachea.

For this fleece, we recommend taking careful measurements and sizing up when in doubt.

Key Features:

  • Pull-over design
  • Cozy polyester material
  • Safe to machine wash and dry

Best for Large Dogs: Gold Paw Stretch Fleece Dog Coat

Gold Paw fleece

Gold Paw Stretch Fleece Dog Coat

This stretchy fleece coat is ideal for extra-large dogs.

Find on Amazon

Available in a rainbow of solid and plaid colors, this soft fleece coat comes in sizes that can fit even the largest of breeds, including Swiss Mountain Dogs and Great Danes. It’s made with a mix of polyester and spandex material for a stretchy, perfect fit, and its over-the-head design means there aren’t any zippers, buttons, or Velcro closures to worry about.

Key Features:

  • Sleeveless design won’t impede your dog’s mobility
  • Made with Oeko-Tex 100-certified imported textiles
  • Machine-washable and dryable on gentle settings

Best Splurge: Pendleton Yakima Dog Coat

Pendleton Yakima Dog Coat

Keep your dog warm and cozy with this high-quality coat from Pendleton.

Shop on Amazon

Pendleton is a trusted brand for top-quality pet parent wearables, but the classic outfitters also make a few great pet accessories, including this fleece coat for your dog. Inspired by vintage camp blankets, this machine-washable jacket sports textured fleece on the outside and is lined with quilted faux suede with Velcro fasteners at the neck and tummy. This makes it a luxurious and ultra-cozy fleece that’s worth the splurge.

Key Features:

  • Made with polar cotton fleece material that’s ultra-soft and not itchy
  • Adjustable Velcro strap on belly
  • Can be worn with harness or leash, thanks to cut-out on back

Best Budget: Creation Core Windproof Sport Vest

Reflective details trim this easy-to-wear fleece coat.

Find on Amazon

While some dog fleece coats and jackets cost almost as much as a coat for humans, this affordable and cozy fleece coat won’t break the bank. Velcro it at the neck and chest for a warm layer that’s easy for your dog to wear. It comes in yellow, gray, and blue, is available in multiple sizes up to XXX-Large, and has reflective details for nighttime strolls.

Key Features:

  • Easy to take on and off with two Velcro closures
  • Has reflective strips for added visibility
  • Machine wash-safe, recommended to hang-dry

Best for Fluffy Dogs: Frisco Reflective 2-in-1 Dog Fleece Coat

Frisco Reflective 2-in-1 Dog Fleece Coat

You can wear each coat separately or combine them for extra warmth.

Shop on Chewy

This two-in-one fleece and water-resistant outer shell is a great find, especially for fluffy-haired dogs. The step-in design is easy to put on and take off and reduces the chance of hair catching on the coat during the process.

Plus, for the price of one coat, you get two separate outerwear pieces: a cozy fleece sweater and a water-resistant outer shell. You can wear the fleece by itself or button it into the outer shell to combine them for extra warmth and coziness.

Key Features:

  • Reflective stripes on the back for more visibility
  • Machine wash and dry on gentle, low settings
  • Available in burgundy or olive colors and 5 sizes

Best for Barrel-Chested Breeds: BoxDog Polar Fleece Jacket

BoxDog Polar Fleece Jacket

Sleeves and a side zipper provide warmth and style for this fleece jacket.

Find on Amazon

Ideal for short-backed, barrel-chested breeds like Bulldogs and Pugs, this polar fleece dog coat goes on and off easily with a stylish side zipper, providing extra warmth with front sleeves and funnel neck design. It also boasts a metal ring on the back of the coat, so it can be worn with a leash (though we’d only recommend this if your dog isn’t a puller).

Key Features:

  • Machine-washable on gentle setting, line-drying recommended
  • Available in 2 colors and 6 sizes
  • Not compatible with a harness

Best for Hiking: Ruffwear Climate Changer Fleece (Verified Review)

Ruffwear Climate Changer Fleece

Ruffwear Climate Changer Fleece

This trail coat is made from recycled materials and fits like a glove.

Find on Amazon

This fleece from popular dog sporting brand Ruffwear is designed to fit like a glove to reduce snagging on the trails and in the underbrush. Made in a range of sizes in two solid colors and two patterns, the Climate Changer prioritizes durability: It’s constructed from recycled materials, and the zipper closure and front-sleeved style help ensure a good fit—so warmth stays in and the elements are kept out.

Our testers were fans—they liked that the stretchy material made it easy to get a good fit, though they noted that it was a little tricky to clasp the zipper on an extra wiggly pup.

Key Features:

  • Quick-drying fleece material
  • Available in 7 color and 6 size options
  • Machine-washable and dryable on gentle, low settings

Best with Harness: Wilderdog Fleece Dog Jacket

Wilderdog Fleece Dog Jacket

Made for outdoor adventures, this fleece adjusts for a great fit.

Shop on Amazon

From popular pet brand Wilderdog, this technical fleece is meant to keep your pup snuggly in winter with its quick-dry fabric, adjustable belly and back leg loops, and neoprene neck gaiter with toggles. Available in three colors, this fleece chat is compatible with harness-wearing and can go either under or on top of a dog harness.

We especially like that this fleece is compatible with a harness that has a front D-ring—after all, pups who pull and walkers in training need to stay warm out there too.

Key Features:

  • Quick-drying fleece material
  • Two adjustment points on neck gaiter
  • Machine-washable on gentle cycle

Best for Rain & Snow: Kurgo Waterproof Dog Jacket

Kurgo Waterproof Dog Jacket

Kurgo Waterproof Dog Jacket

This fleece-lined coat boasts a waterproof ripstop nylon exterior.

Find on AmazonShop on Chewy

Ranging in size from XS to XL in three hues, this water- and wind-proof dog coat is made from sturdy ripstop nylon and lined with cozy fleece. Kurgo’s jacket also boasts reflective piping with an LED light strip for low-light safety.

A zipper opening at the back makes it easy to wear with a harness, and buckles are securely placed over the top of the fabric to keep from trapping or tangling in a long-furred dog’s hair. We especially like that it’s machine washable—but we expected no less from trusted brand Kurgo.

Key Features:

  • Designed for cold, wet conditions
  • Made of durable waterproof and windproof denier and polyester material
  • Can be work over a harness, thanks to a zippered opening on back

Best for Layering: Hurtta Razzle-Dazzle Midlayer Jacket

Hurtta fleece coat

Huts and Bay Abstract Dog Hoodie

This reversible coat can be worn with either the soft fleece or smooth knit material on the outside.

Shop on Amazon

Made from sturdy, midweight material, this coat is reversible and has both a cozy fleece-lined side and a smoother knit side to keep your pup nice and toasty. Three adjustment points on the back, neck, and belly help you get a good fit, and the high-neck design provides dogs with additional warmth around their collars. Wear it by itself on cool, dry days or layer it underneath another coat or rain jacket for additional warmth and protection.

Key Features:

  • Easy to put on and take off
  • Easily adjustable Velcro straps with no zippers or buckles
  • Reflective seams for added visibility

Best for Puppies: Scenereal Reversible Fleece Jacket

Scenereal Reversible Fleece Jacket

Scenereal Reversible Fleece Jacket

Go plaid or go solid with this reversible fleece.

Find on Amazon

Available in an extra-small size that’s ideal for growing puppies, this reversible fleece comes in two different solid/plaid color combos with fold-over collars. It stays put with Velcro at the neck and chest for a comfy fit that can adjust as your dog grows, and it’s relatively easy to put on a squirmy puppy. Plus, it has a leash hole on the back, so you can take your friend out on short walks and training sessions while wearing it.

Most importantly for puppies, it’s machine washable, so whatever happens—be it mud or accident—is easy to clean up.

Key Features:

  • Two reversible fleece sides, one with a solid color and one with a plaid design
  • Adjustable Velcro neck and chest straps
  • Machine-washable and dryable on gentle, low settings

How We Chose

The fleece coats and jackets featured here were selected based on a combination of our own hands-on testing and a comprehensive look at customer reviews across a wide variety of retail platforms. We prioritized the quality of materials, design functionality, washability, and material give. We’re also guided by the experience of living and playing alongside our own much-loved and strongly opinionated pups, who are never stingy with their feedback.
