Rover Reveals Canada’s Most Popular Dog Breeds of 2020

Rover Reveals Canada’s Most Popular Dog Breeds of 2020

Report Reveals Mixed Breeds as Most Popular Choice Among Canadians, as Dog Adoption Rates Increase Since the Start of Covid-19 Pandemic

June 24, 2020 – Rover.com®, the world’s largest and most trusted network of five-star pet sitters and dog walkers, today released “Canada’s Most Popular Dog Breeds of 2020,” its second-annual report ranking the top 20 most popular dog breeds across the country and within 10 major Canadian cities. The top three dog breeds of 2020 are mixed, Labrador Retriever and Golden Retriever.

Similar surveys were run in the US and UK, where both countries also selected mixed breed as the most preferred breed this year. All three countries also selected the Labrador Retriever as number two. The mixed breed and Labrador switched spots this year according to the 2019 Canadian report, and the Golden Retriever stands strong at number three. Other country favorites include Shih Tzu, German Shepherd and Chihuahua.

“Canada is a country that loves our dogs, and choosing a new companion is a joyful and exciting experience,” said Jordana Ber, pet trends expert. “Sometimes we choose our dogs, but many times they choose us. Luckily, there is a dog out there to fit everyone’s preferences and needs.”

“As we’ve seen since the start of the pandemic, Canadians are adding to their pack by opening up their homes to new dogs,” said Toronto-based veterinarian Rebecca Greenstein.  “During stressful times, companion pets provide mental, social and emotional benefits – regardless of the breed.  Some Canadians seek out specific traits and breeds, while others are thrilled to adopt a mixed-breed rescue.  The magical reality is that each breed brings something special to the table, a whole lot of love.”

To help prospective parents learn more about the best dog breed options based on their lifestyle and personal preferences, Rover created the Dog Breed Selector Tool.
