The refined and charming Maltese breed comes with quite an interesting history. Likely introduced to Malta by the Phoenicians, this breed was celebrated by the aristocrats of the Roman Empire and considered the perfect accessory and symbol of status. After Rome fell, the Maltese breed was kept alive by Chinese breeders who crossed them with some of their own toy breeds, creating an even more adorable canine that quickly gained popularity—eventually being recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1888.
We’ve rounded up the most popular Maltese names of the year from our enormous Rover.com database of dog names nationwide. Looking for a dog name for your new puppy or adopted family member?
