Finding the right bed for your dog can be tricky—you don’t really know if your pup will like it until they, well, try it. And there are so many factors to consider: comfort, style, durability, and more. Looking at brands you already know or have heard about can help narrow it down. Casper is well known for their memory foam mattresses for humans and their 30-day hassle-free trial period. But how do their dog beds stack up?
In addition to offering serious double-layered memory foam support, this orthopedic bed is said to be so strong that your dog is encouraged to dig the surface to get into their comfort zone. But with the well-known name and the luxury features comes a steeper price than many other dog beds, leaving us to wonder if it’s really worth it. We put our Rover test pups on the case to review the Casper dog bed and find out!
Casper Dog Bed Review: The Specs
The Casper dog bed is built like a serious luxe dog mattress—comfortable and tough, with a slight bolster around the perimeter to provide extra support for dogs who like a surrounding ledge to rest their head. The interior is composed of a combination of memory foam and support foam. The nylon, polyester, and olefin cover is also removable via a hidden zipper, making it easy to toss in the wash. And like Casper’s human mattresses, you can try it out for free for 30 days with a money-back guarantee.
Extra sturdy with specially designed microfibers on top, the Casper dog bed mimics the feeling of scratching loose dirt. That way, your dog can get the satisfaction that digging before settling brings without the mess that typically comes with it! And, if you have a big dog, the large size adds an inch of thickness to the already substantial mattress, recognizing that big dogs need bigger support for their bones and joints.
Additional details include the following:
- The Casper bed comes in three sizes: small (26 x 19 x 6 inches for dogs up to 30 pounds), medium (33 x 25 x 6 inches for dogs up to 60 pounds, and large (45 x 35 x 7 inches for dogs up to 90 pounds).
- The sleek design of a Casper dog bed and its neutral-toned covers (available in blue, tan, and gray) complement a wide range of decorating styles.
- Two layers of support foam relieve pressure on joints and muscles.
- This dog bed is a result of over 100 prototypes, hundreds of hours of laboratory testing, and months of dog sleep studies.
Reviewing the Casper Dog Bed
Our Rover tester Amber and her two dogs—a Boston Terrier and a Pug—reviewed the Casper bed in a medium size. Overall, they had a positive experience, with a few minor caveats.
For starters, unpacking was a cinch as the bed expanded straight out of the box. The medium was also true to size. It was big enough for a medium-sized dog or, in Amber’s case, two small dogs. Both of whom seemed very interested in the bed as she was unboxing it.
Amber especially liked the modern look of her gray Casper bed, which made it easy to fit into her home decor. And while it is pretty plush at six inches tall, it wasn’t so high that her smaller dogs had difficulty getting in and out. But what did her pups think? Amber’s dogs liked the bed, but they liked it even more after she put a soft blanket on top of it, seeming to prefer more plushness than the Casper cover provided.
While Amber found the bed well-made and stylish, she discovered that the bolster around the edge left more to be desired. Since the bolster was so low, over time, it wore out, and her dogs ended up seeking out other beds so they could prop their heads on sturdier edges. She also found that the cover wasn’t very tight, so she would have to adjust it often so it wouldn’t look wrinkly and loose.
Final Review: Should You Buy the Casper Dog Bed?
Overall, the Casper dog bed is a solid option with a lot going for it: durable materials, lots of support, a nice look that will fit into most homes, and a few premium touches for a dash of luxury. But the low bolster might not satisfy the pups who truly like to prop their heads up, and the high price can be daunting for many pet parents.
In particular, we think the Casper dog bed would be a good fit for:
- Dogs who like extra bone and joint support
- Dogs who are side sleepers or curlers
- Pet parents who want a sleek dog bed that will fit into their home’s style
- Pet parents who want a more durable bed
- Diggers who like to scratch their bed before settling in
Some households might not find the Casper bed to suit their needs, including the following:
- Dogs that really like to prop their heads up on beds; other bolstered beds might work better
- Pet parents who prefer a lower price point for an orthopedic dog bed
- People who prefer a more fitted cover on a dog bed
- Pups who like a softer top surface on their beds
