Pomeranians are spunky, active little dogs who love accompanying their people on adventures. But even though they’re small, these fluffy pups are often full of energy, so it’s important to find the right fitted harness to keep them visible and securely on a leash. And because they often have delicate necks, it’s a good idea to look for a comfortable yet secure harness that evenly distributes pressure across their chest.
We spoke with Dr. Sabrina Kong, DVM & veterinary consultant at We Love Doodles, to learn more about what to look for in a harness for a Pomeranian and compiled a list of our top six picks.
Best Overall: Puppia Soft Dog Harness
This vest-style Puppia harness is wildly popular for small breeds with big coats, and it’s not hard to see why, as Dr. Kong explains. “One harness I often recommend to Pomeranian owners is the Puppia Soft Dog Harness. It’s designed with a soft, breathable air-mesh fabric that ensures your Pom’s fur won’t get matted or damaged and is comfortable for them to wear.”
The harness also features a sturdy D-metal ring for a secure leash attachment and has an adjustable chest belt to make fitting easier. A really determined escape artist may be able to back out, since the neck strap isn’t adjustable—but we’ve found that relatively rare.
Why we like it:
- Minimal pressure points making it gentle on pullers
- Available in six sizes and over ten colors
- Edges lined with soft fleece
Best Step-In Harness: Voyager All Weather Dog Harness
This step-in harness uses Velcro closures to securely and gently hold your pup. The soft, padded, breathable mesh is extra-gentle, which is important to help prevent matting with your Pom’s double-coat, and reflective bands on the sides add nighttime visibility.
We like step-in harnesses for pups who don’t tolerate over-the-head models or whose coats require an especially gentle touch. They may not offer quite as much control, but they’re hard to beat in the comfort department, which is essential for a lot of Pomeranians.
Why we like it:
- Available in over 16 colors
- Secure Velcro and buckle closures prevent back-outs
- Double metal D-rings for secure leash attachment
Best to Avoid Chafing and Matting: EcoBark Max Comfort and Control Vest Dog Harness
This popular eco-friendly, breathable mesh harness is lightweight and comfortable to help prevent chafing and matting.”Pomeranian’s extra-long, thick fur can become matted and uncomfortable if the harness is ill-fitting or rubs against the fur excessively,” said Dr. Kong. “Harnesses with wider straps often distribute pressure more evenly and minimize the risk of matting.”
The adjustability of the waist strap on the EcoBark is an especially nice touch, since it helps you get a tailored fit that won’t move dramatically on your little pup’s body to rub sensitive skin and hair.
Why we like it:
- The vest is designed to take the pressure off delicate necks
- Anti-rub stitch shield to prevent chafing
- Secure straps and careful sizing make it nearly impossible to back out of
Best for Puppies: Comfort Fit Metric USA Small Dog Harness
Measuring your pup for the right size harness is important to ensure comfort and safety for Poms of all ages, but especially growing puppies. “The right fit is vital, as a too-tight harness could dig into their skin, while a too-loose one could allow them to wriggle free,” cautions Dr. Kong.
This Comfort Fit harness is unusual in that it offers a truly tiny option for the smallest puppies—which Pomeranian puppies are. We like the padding that runs around the circumference of arm and neck holes to prevent chafing. Comfort is especially important for Pom puppies, since you want their first experiences on leash to be pleasant ones.
Why we like it:
- Features a quick-release clip for easy on and off
- Two reinforced D-rings for secure leash attachment
- Selection of bright colors to help keep your pup visible
Best Padded: Gooby Choke Free Small Dog Harness
“Like many small breeds, Pomeranians are prone to specific health issues like luxating patella and tracheal collapse, which can be exacerbated by excessive pulling,” explains Dr. Kong. “For Pomeranian parents, looking for a harness that places pressure on the chest or torso rather than the neck is crucial.”
The Gooby Choke-Free Step-In Comfort Dog Harness was designed to eliminate stress on dogs’ necks. The padded X-frame ensures the force is evenly distributed across the chest, so your small dog will be able to breathe easily on walks.
Our testers really liked their Gooby harnesses for small dog adventures. The only caveat? The comfortable mesh tends to hang on to moisture, so make sure to dry them well if you live in an area that’s wet and muddy as often as not.
Why we like it:
- Step-in style, so it does not need to go over your pup’s head
- Soft mesh and suede trimming
- Four adjustable straps to ensure a perfect fit
Best No-Pull: Rabbitgoo Dog Harness
“While labeling all Pomeranians as pullers is inaccurate, their curious and energetic nature might sometimes lead them to tug on their leash,” admits Dr. Kong. “A padded no-pull harness can be a great choice, as it discourages pulling without causing discomfort or harm.”
No-pull harnesses typically place the leash attachment point at the front instead of the back, which gently redirects a pup who pulls to the side instead of the front. Pomeranian-sized no-pull harnesses can be hard to come by, but Rabbitgoo makes a widely popular little model that has plenty of padding to distribute pressure across the chest instead of the neck.
Why we like it:
- Four adjustable straps and two fast-release buckles
- Soft padded panels
- Reflective strips for extra visibility
How We Chose
The Pomeranian harnesses featured here were selected based on a combination of our own hands-on testing, a comprehensive look at customer reviews across a wide variety of retail platforms, and interviews with veterinary experts. We prioritized padded designs that distribute pressure across the chest instead of the neck, comfortable materials that minimizing chafing, and quality fasteners and D-rings.
We’re also guided by the experience of living and playing alongside our own much-loved and strongly opinionated pups, who are never stingy with their feedback.
