Pet care experience
I didn't grow up with pets but I always wanted a dog. Four years ago, I became Auntie Uma, the official pet sitter for my friends' dogs in New York. For four years I took care of a free spirited corgi, a beautiful golden retriever puppy and a very shy but extremely cuddly Korean Jindo. Coco (corgi) is the type who cannot be tamed, which meant being hyper vigilant on walks, making sure she didn't eat anything she wasn't supposed to. I practically raised Sassa (golden retriever) along with her mother (my friend). My friend got her when she was a puppy and I helped her take care of Sassa because she unfortunately she had a lot of health issues and it was a lot of responsibility given that Sassa was just a puppy. I gave her medicines, took her to the ER when my friend was away, managed to bring her back home after she threw typical golden retriever tantrums during walks 😂. Bean (Korean Jindo) was a rescue adopted from South Korea. He is extremely shy but absolutely obedient and basically follows you around everywhere like a lost puppy. Plus he is EXTREMELY CUDDLY. I am also registered on TrustedHouseSitters, you can also view my profile there. I joined Rover because I wanted to get used to being around pets and taking care of them as I plan to adopt a dog in the next three years.

Reviews

Uma was great. Very easy to communicate with and incredibly kind. She was gentle and caring with Bella, and I really appreciated her warm and thoughtful approach throughout. 🩷

Uma was very sweet and accompanied. My puppy enjoyed being with her and he always communicated when something was needed + many daily updates :)

Uma is a great human being and knows how to take care of pets. We thank you so much for being so friendly and playful with our kids . Good luck for all 👍🙏❤️🧿

I really try to ensure that your pet's routine stays the same as much as possible that is why I prefer housesitting and offer only that instead of boarding. During my years of pet sitting, I have noticed that even the most outgoing and independent pet can become sad when they notice that their parents aren't back after a few hours and that really breaks my heart. On the first and second day, I play with the pet as much as possible, of course, depending on how shy or outgoing they are. I check in on with them every hour or so to see what they are up to and how they are feeling. I make sure to communicate with the parents daily by sending them photos or videos so that they are relaxed as well. :)
Information Uma K. would like to know about your pet
It is important for me to know if your pet has any health conditions and is on any medication and also how they are with other dogs. I'd also like to know the overall behaviour trends of your pet, what are they like on a daily basis when you are around and how they tend to behave when you are not there. Since every pet is unique, this information helps me to better identify what they are feeling when the parents' are away and take the appropriate measures to make sure the pet feels safe and comfortable.
A typical day
Depending on the pet, I sometimes play fetch or tug with their favorite toy indoors. When its time to walk the dog, I like to walk to a park. I prefer not to let the dog off leash even if they are well trained. With cats I normally use the string toys that are tied to a stick that they are supposed to chase and play around for a while. For one of the cats I watched, the mom had set up a sort of "hiking trail" around the apartment. I'd often leave treats on them to get the cat to move around when I saw that he was looking a bit sad.

Availability
I have to go to the office 2 days of the week but can also work from home as needed. However, on some days I have to go to the office for some in-person meetings. Which is why unfortunately during the week, I can only care for pets that can be home alone for 5-7 hours and care for all types of pets over the weekend.
