The 117 Most Popular Havanese Names

For Dog People
By Heather Logue

Thought to have been introduced by Italian or Spanish travelers, the Havanese is considered the National Dog of Cuba, and has a long been a popular lap companion in the country. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), when the Communist takeover of Cuba happened in 1959, those fleeing the country brought their pups to America, launching a new-found popularity for the breed there as well.

This is a breed that is both adaptable and social, making them great for those living in a city, while their high intelligence makes them fun and easy to train. As long as you give them enough love, affection (and admiration), they’ll be an ideal addition to you family. We’ve rounded up the most popular Havanese names of the year from our enormous Rover.com database of dog names nationwide. Yes, these are real names given by Havanese owners, ranked in order of popularity. Did your dog’s name make the list?

Havanese Name Trends

Since this is a breed known to have some serious charisma, it’s no wonder that many of the names chosen by their families seem to reflect this sense of star power. Our favorites include Ziggy, Elvis, Izzy, and Diamond. Chewy is also up there in popularity—perhaps a nod to our favorite hairy Star Wars hero? Whatever the reason, these names speak to the breed’s smart and captivating spirit.

We also see a big influx of tasty snack-inspired names, probably because this breed has such a sweet appearance. The most popular ones include Cookie, Biscuit, Mocha, Oreo, and Ginger.

Havanese Name Advice

If you’re having trouble deciding, keep in mind that great Havanese names can come from many different sources of inspiration, such as your favorite color, books, musicians, your heritage, or even dog breed history. For example, your puppy might sport a literature-inspired moniker like Catcher or a color-themed moniker like Violet.

Another consideration when choosing your Havanese name? Dog training. This is of particular importance for puppies. When you’re teaching your new dog to respond to commands like sit, stay, or come, you’ll want to be sure their name isn’t a source of confusion. In other words, avoid puppy names that sound like a common dog training cue, such as “Bit,” which could easily be misheard as “sit.”

Of course, what matters most is that the dog name you choose rolls off your tongue. The best Havanese names will make you happy. We’re fans of the “backdoor test” for dog name selection. It’s pretty much what it sounds like: stand at the back door and call out your new dog‘s potential name. Saying “Boomer, it’s time for dinner!” or “Lucky, leave it!” helps take the name out of your imagination and into reality.
