For Dog People

A very good golden retriever named Henry is going viral for this adorable video showing off his mighty hunting prowess.  Watch to the end to see his vicious pounce!

???? In the jungle, the mighty jungle, a golden stalks his prey ????

There I am, minding my own business, when I turn around to see I’m being stalked by a viscous doggo. I just consider myself lucky to have survived. I might as well have been a wounded gazelle on the plains of Africa. ??

When Henry isn’t pretending to be the king of the jungle, he can be found in his service dog vest, training and working with his mom Jess Paulsen.

Practice makes perfect

Working on our cellphone retrieval! First we begin with a known command, “take.” Then we’ll transition into “take, phone” and then remove the word “take” entirely. Helpful not only in case of emergency but also to save spoons having to retrieve items.

Having chronic illness constantly eating away at your energy levels can be tough, but having a very good boy like Henry in her life gives Jess a major inspiration boost. The pair work together, play together, and train together in perfect harmony.

Normally I don’t share deeply personal medical stuff because #tmi but today was Henry’s first day taking care of me under a real procedure/hospital setting. I couldn’t be his handler because I was not strong enough physically but my husband helped me care for Henry in the meantime. I couldn’t be more proud of Henry, I realized how incredibly in tune with me he is, he refused to leave my side and didn’t care for the attention he received from staff. Waking up to his kisses was all I needed to feel better. Thank you all for the well wishes and prayers ♥️ Also I was able to get enough footage for a YouTube video about the experience so look forward to that!

And what the pair love to do most is get out in the world and have adventures! From cruises to Disney vacations, they’ve done it all, and are always saving up money and working on training new moves so that they’re always ready for the next adventure big or small.

King of the world!

What’s more beautiful, that smile or that water?

And not only does Henry make his mom’s life better, sometimes he gets to spread his golden sunshine around for others in need. Gotta love the story below.

A very good boy

“Is it possible for a dog to be your hero?” -The words mumbled by a 13 year old suffering a panic attack at Disney World. As we sat nearby I kept my eye out, wondering what had happened to the poor girl that was hyperventilating, shaking and crying. Her mom caressed her hair and told her it was all okay. After 5 minutes, when her father had walked a few feet away I approached him with Henry and asked if she would like to say hi, not knowing what she was suffering from. He said “that might help.” Henry greeted her happily and she immediately began running her fingers through his fur. He sat down between her legs, kissing her a few times. Her mother revealed that she was having a panic attack, she couldn’t feel her legs or stop crying. After a few minutes she began taking deep breaths, a few more minutes and she began speaking. She said Henry was her hero and her mother wondered the odds that we would be sitting nearby. Henry stayed with her the whole time, until her family was able to safely leave. Before she left she looked at me and said “You have no idea how much this means to me” unfortunately I did know. It made me so grateful to have witnessed Henry do something so beautiful, to save someone from themself. I was able to watch from the outside the same thing that he does for me daily. I never asked her name but I know I’ll remember her forever and I have no doubt she’ll remember Henry forever.

If I could only give you one piece of advice when training a service dog it’s to start early on the basics. Luckily, when Henry first came home I wasn’t doing terribly health wise. I was able to train him daily and get him into a routine. I couldn’t have known that by the time he was 9 months old I would be in a much different place where training only happened once or twice a week. When you are owner training you have to take advantage of times when you are able to train because you don’t know when that may be interrupted. Remember though to always do what works for your team. Henry thrives off of training but too much can lead to burnout, although not in his case. Every dog will be different. Every handler will be different and require different needs. It’s okay that this method worked for us and it’s okay if another method works for you. Also note that Henry heeled on my right hand side for the first 6 months of his life because it was more comfortable for me but when we decided to change it into a “proper” heel we had no issue. Perfect example of deciding to not be “stuck in my ways” and trying something new although scary at the time, turned out to be no big deal. ♥️ Hope you enjoyed this 4.5 month old Henry in training
