Big dogs need extra support, thanks to their large, heavy frames. And that goes double for big pups like German Shepherds and Great Danes, who are prone to joint issues such as hip or elbow dysplasia. Beds with high-density memory foam are ideal for large dogs, as are orthopedic beds filled with gel or air chambers. These materials conform to your dog’s shape, providing a supportive cushion to relieve pressure points.
The Furhaven Goliath is a massive orthopedic bed made especially for large and extra-large dogs, with a thick memory foam mattress and two layers of easy-to-clean covers. Offering multiple big-dog sizes, it’s also bigger than many other large-dog beds on the market. But how comfortable and supportive is it really?
To find out, we put the Furhaven Goliath to the test. Here’s everything we found in our review.
Furhaven Goliath Dog Bed: The Details
This whopper of a bed features a lot of the elements you’d want in an orthopedic dog bed. For starters, it has an extra-thick, seven-inch orthopedic foam base to provide joint support and soothe pressure points. The hefty foam is also medical-grade and CertiPUR-US certified to ensure it meets the standards for content, emissions, and durability. Supporting dogs up to 300 pounds, the Furhaven Goliath comes in three extra-large sizes:
- 2XL: 48″ x 35″ x 11″
- 3XL: 52″ x 41.5″ x 11″
- 4XL: 60″ x 48″ x 11″
Added features include the following:
- Bolstered sides for head support
- Faux fur lining with stitched patterning for extra padding
- A water-resistant interior mattress liner
- A machine-washable cover
Testing the Furhaven Goliath Dog Bed
To put the Furhaven Goliath to the test, we got help from Rover reviewer Arah and their 60-pound pup Lana.
Lana has never been that into other dog beds, preferring to sleep on the floor, on the couch, or in her human’s bed. But as Lana is approaching her senior years, Arah wanted to give her a more comfortable and supportive space to sleep. Enter the Furhaven Goliath.
From the moment Arah brought the Furhaven Goliath home, it was a huge hit. For a dog who never really cared about other beds, Lana was very interested in this one. At first, she used the bed as her own giant pillow, but within a half-hour, she was enthusiastically jumping on it. By nighttime, Lana had barely left the bed and had brought all her toys to share in the comfort.
Now the bed is Lana’s favorite spot in the home, and Arah is a pretty big fan of it, too. This beast of a bed can comfortably fit not only a big dog and their massive assortment of toys, but also a person if you’re so inclined to snuggle with your pet. Arah also likes that the memory foam stands up to Lana’s large frame, helping to distribute her weight and taking pressure off her joints, as a good orthopedic dog bed should do.
Not only is the Furhaven bed a very comfortable spot for Lana to spread out, but Arah loves that it looks great in the living room, too, with its ultra-plush faux fur.
An added plus? The cover is machine washable and simple to clean, which Arah finds super helpful given Lana’s super shedding ways. The bed can also be vacuumed in a pinch, and the waterproof liner adds an extra layer of security and dirt management.
Final Review: Does Your Dog Need the Furhaven Goliath?
If you have a larger-than-life furry friend, the Furhaven Goliath dog bed is hard to beat. Not only does it offer an incredible amount of space in a wide range of sizes, but it also provides the orthopedic joint and weight support that big pups need. We also love that it’s affordable because, let’s be real, big dogs often come with big costs. And if you have smaller to mid-size dogs, Furhaven has orthopedic sizes for them, too.
In particular, we think the Furhaven Goliath would be a great fit for:
- Dogs who like to rest their heads on bolstered sides
- Large and extra-large dogs who could use some extra cushion for their heavy frames
- Older big dogs who have arthritis or stiffer joints
- Dogs who have conditions like hip dysplasia
- Pet parents with pups who have frequent accidents and need a waterproof liner
- Multiple dogs who like to sleep and cuddle together
- Pet parents who like to cuddle with their big pups
The Furhaven Goliath, however, might not be suited for everyone, including:
- Households with less floor space to spare
- Dogs who prefer a more cozy style of bed, like a donut or a cave
