With so many options available, choosing the right crate for your dog can be tough.

When it comes to the most attractive crates on the market, the dog crate end table is often a good choice. Unlike other materials commonly used in dog crates, such as metal or plastic, dog crate end tables are generally crafted from wood, which blends nicely with the other furniture in your home. Wooden dog crate end tables also tend to be more enclosed, offering your dog better privacy. And they are great space savers.

We break down some of the pros and cons of owning a dog crate end table, and suggest some options available for purchase online.

Dog Crate End Tables: Pros and Cons

Pros

Let’s face it: making a plastic or metal crate look good is nearly impossible. But most dog crate end tables are made of wood, which is a natural material that can enhance the beauty of your home. If you have a well-trained, mature dog who has experience with crates (as opposed to one who needs crate training and may chew or scratch), this kind of crate is an option for you.

A well-built wood dog crate can do double duty as both a dog crate and end table, which can be a great space saver in small rooms.

Another advantage of the crate-as-furniture scenario is that you can keep your crate in spaces where the family gathers like the living or family room without cramping your style, and this means your dog has a space to relax with his “pack” and feel like one of the family, which provides for better socialization.

Wooden crates generally also have a more enclosed structure, which gives dogs privacy and more closely replicates the den experience (just be sure your crate has proper ventilation).

Dog end table crates made from solid wood such as pine, fir, birch, or cedar have a more natural look and usually use fewer resources to make, which can be appealing to those looking to “simplify” or reduce their impact on the environment.

Cons

For crate training, wooden dog crate end tables are generally not a good idea.

“Wood crates can be harder to fully sanitize and clean, and some dogs may find the wood fun to chew on or scratch,” says Kate LaSala, a New York City-based dog trainer, behavior consultant, and owner of Rescued By Training,

If you need a crate to crate train your puppy, you should consider a stronger, more durable crate (we have some ideas here). To crate train persistent chewers or large dogs, you’ll want to go with something heavier-duty.

Another drawback to the wooden dog crate end table is that wood is a porous material that can easily absorb your doggy’s smells. And, aside from being unsuitable for crate training, wooden dog crates are usually “one-size-fits-all” as opposed to crates designed for growing puppies that are more versatile and feature adjustable sizing so that the crate can grow with your dog.

Because wooden dog crate end tables are designed to be more attractive, they are also often more expensive, so purchasing one is a commitment, but you still might have to buy another crate if you expect your dog to grow, or the crate becomes damaged.

A Quick Word on Size

Dog crates come in as many sizes as there are dogs. To keep your dog comfortable, but still offer the den-like experience, LaSala advises that “the crate be just large enough for the dog to be able to stand up and turn around. And that’s for any breed.”

Be aware of your dog’s measurements and pay special attention to the dimensions of your crate before purchase. Likewise, note the crate’s weight capacity and be sure it corresponds to your dog.

The End Game

It’s important to remember that the goal with any crate is to make your dog feel safe and secure.

“With proper crate training, the dog will see the crate as a happy, safe place and voluntarily go into the crate,” LaSala says.

Successful crate training equals a happy dog, which equals a happy owner, so you’ll want to choose a collapsible dog crate with care and consideration.
