Maybe not. Natural sugar from fruit is safe for your dog; however, granulated sugar is not healthy for your dog. Dogs that regularly eat a large amount of sugar are at risk for weight issues, teeth problems (i.e. cavities), and diabetes. Obesity in dogs puts unneeded stress on your dog’s heart and joints and can even shorten your dog’s lifespan.
Also avoid products that contain xylitol, an artificial sweetener that’s toxic to your dog.
Symptoms to Watch For
Watch for these symptoms of high blood sugar if your dog regularly eats a lot of sugar:
- Depression
- Bloodshot eyes
- Urinary tract or kidney infection
- Hyperactivity
