French Dog Names From A-Z
There are strict rules for naming pedigree dogs in France. Each year receives a letter, and pet parents must give their dogs names beginning with that letter.
The system began in 1926 as a way to determine a dog’s age by its registered name. Over time, the letters K, Q, W, X, Y and Z were eliminated because very few French names begin with those letters. This means every 20 years, the alphabet starts over.
“V” is the designated letter for 2024, and in 2025, the alphabet will begin again with “A.” Here are some suggestions for this year and beyond.

Did You Know?
- In France, all dogs must be microchipped and registered with a national database.
- France uses the one letter per year system for naming. Several countries, including Switzerland, Austria and Philippines, use a “one letter per litter” rule. This means a dog’s first litter will have names beginning with “A,” the second litter will have names beginning with “B,” and so on.
- The Beauceron is a herding and guard dog of northern France named for the Beauce region. The United States has no naming rules, but many Beauceron breeders follow the French naming convention.
- The American Kennel Club limits dog names to 50 characters, and names are subject to AKC approval.
