Science-Based, Humane Dog Training

Over more than 15 years, I have worked with more than 5,000 dogs and their people across private training, dog care, and animal welfare. I spent nearly a decade owning and operating a comprehensive dog care and training business with a storefront in downtown Oakland, and most recently served as Behavior and Training Program Manager at one of the nation’s leading animal welfare organizations. That range of experience allows me to meet clients where they are, whether they need help with everyday manners and life skills or more challenging behavioral concerns.

What to expect

Consultation

A behavioral consultation is a comprehensive 90-minute assessment of your dog’s behavior, history, environment, and current challenges. I’ll observe your dog, discuss the circumstances and patterns surrounding the behavior, and identify contributing factors that may be important to the case. We’ll discuss immediate management and safety strategies, and I’ll develop recommendations and a training plan based on what we learn.

Sessions

Typically in your home

Training sessions are practical and collaborative. We’ll review progress since our last meeting, work through exercises appropriate to your dog’s current skill level and goals, and make adjustments based on what we observe. I coach you through the exercises so you understand both what to do and why we’re doing it. Between sessions, you’ll have specific exercises to practice so we can build progressively from one session to the next.

Positive Reinforcement

My approach is science-based, humane, and grounded in established principles of learning and behavior. I look at why a behavior is occurring, the environment in which it happens, and what the dog is communicating before deciding how best to address it. Training focuses on reinforcing useful skills, changing emotional responses when needed, and setting dogs up to make successful choices rather than simply suppressing unwanted behavior. Just as importantly, I teach people how and why the training works so they have practical tools they can continue using in everyday life.
