Training is a partnership!

I use positive reinforcement training with treats, attention, and play as rewards to teach dogs behaviors most compatable with living and thriving in their home environment and community. I aim to help dog owners develop a joyful relationship with their dog, to set realistic goals for their dog in their home, their neighborhood, when out and about on walks, and if desired, when meeting other people and dogs. Please feel free to ask me for a free initial meet and greet to discuss your goals for yourself and your dog(s). I look forward to meeting you!

What to expect

Consultation

At our initial meeting we will discuss your hopes and goals for yourself and your dog, and some options to help acheive them. We can also discuss any past experience you've had with other trainers, what's worked and what hasn't worked. I will want to spend some time getting to know your dog in your presence, so I suggest having some treats and toys available to help us get aquainted, especially if your dog is shy. Please be prepared to show proof your dog has had proper vaccines when we first meet.

Sessions

Typically in your home

Once I learn what reinforcers to use to help engage your dog's attention (which kinds of food treats, pets, play, toys and attention are rewarding for your dog), I like to start by teaching a few games aimed at gaining your dogs attention and engagement. I will demonstarte each game and ask you to observe and then try the game. From there we can begin to train specific behaviors as alternatives to the ones you wish to decrease or replace.

Positive Reinforcement

I am a retired special education teacher and newly certified dog trainer. My training is grounded in positive reinforcement techniques. I spend several hours per week furthering my education through the Canine College Program at Our Companions Animal Rescue Center in Manchester, CT. I volunteer in training there and at Tails You Win. I also volunteer in an Adopt A Shelter program, providing dogs with enrichment and training; I apply the techniques I am learning with dog owners in my neighborhood and at the request of friends and family to train their own dogs.
