Learning alongside your dog

I am a beginner! This will be my first time offering training services professionally, so I will be moving through my own learning curve. I won't bring to the table the depth of knowledge nor the skillset of a more experienced trainer. I carry this honestly & responsibly, and as an approach that can support our collective (me, you & your dog) openness to the learning process. I will be exceptionally adaptable and sensitive to our unique dynamic. I have 4+ years of experience professionally walking & sitting dogs. I've taken care of dogs across the behavioral spectrum at the Humane Society.

Behavior experience

Jumping
Leash manners
Leash reactivity
House manners
Recall
Mouthiness
Boundary setting

Training skill set

Puppy training
Adult dog training

What to expect

Consultation

In-person consultations are preferred, so I can meet your dog and see you interact a bit. Over the phone can work, too. Both are free. We'll give some space to getting to know each other, and then my aim is to build an understanding of your dog, your circumstance, challenges, and goals. I'll ask you a bunch of questions. You can ask me questions if you want. We'll try to be efficient with our time, but go in depth enough to assess the whole situation. We might be able to come to an agreement at the time of the consult, but usually I will be in touch within a day, and we'll go from there.

Sessions

Typically in your home

The organization of our sessions will depend on your situation and our goals. Generally, I'll ask you to be present at the first session, and I'll mainly watch & learn & offer feedback as you two work. If we're working on repatterning a specific behavior we don't want, like mouthiness, and/or I feel that the dynamic between you and your dog is integral to our learning process, I'll ask you to be present at our subsequent sessions. If we're working on a new skill, likely not. We'll all be learning together, but our sessions will flow at the rhythm & pace that suits our primary learner :)

Positive Reinforcement

It's up to us to enact our responsibilty to choose what, and how, to teach our dogs. Like learning anything for anybody, it's about being persistent and consistent, patient and clear, and most importantly, staying in touch with the heart of things--why we love our dogs, and our wish to share life with them in a functional & healthy way. They don't understand things in the way we do, but they can learn as well as we do, if not better. And they have the same wish!
