Pet care experience
Since I was 6 I have had dogs in my house. I've had both small and large dogs of all ages. Currently in my household we have three little dogs -- a chihuahua mix and 2 miniature poodles. When I was younger I grew up with a husky-pit bull mix and two great Pyrenees. All that is to say that I'm comfortable with dogs with a variety of personalities, energy levels, and sizes. I'm not afraid to meet the energy of a high energy dog! I have limited training experience with dogs. I've trained one of my poodles to do a few tricks and am constantly working with my dogs to train out negative behaviors. I believe in positive reinforcement training! My experience with senior dogs is also quite extensive. One of our great pyres who passed a couple years ago suffered with horrible arthritis and blindness. I remember having to help him outside and up the steps. There was a point where he needed oral medication as well, which I administered a handful of times. One of my overall philosophies with animal care is communicating with the animal. Many frustrations that come with pet care and training come from a lack of understanding what your animal needs. My dogs for example have a tendency to bark very often. This is because my dogs are incredibly anxious and protective of their people. So rather than yelling at them and contributing to the noise, my approach is to soothe them. I'll take them away from the window and onto the couch where I will speak to them softly and pet them. This is just one example of how I interpret the behavior of animals and act on that behavior.
Reviews
Yan housesat for my sensitive/reactive dog Elton for 4 days & did a wonderful job! I especially appreciate her sensitivity and understanding of dog body language and temperament.

My goal as a petsitter is to give pets care similar to what their owners would give them. I usually spend an hour or two with the pets I watch, making plenty of time for play and cuddles
Information Yan C. would like to know about your pet
Before working with your dog I will need to know their energy level, personality, and any dietary restrictions! Knowing their energy level will change the activities I do with your dog. Knowing whether your dog is shy or outgoing both with people and other dogs will also inform me on how to approach interactions with both. For example, if your dog is shy and anxious I would go out of my way to avoid people and dogs in public, opting for a walk around the neighborhood rather than a trip to the park. Dietary restrictions are also important! I'd hate to feed your pup too many treats or treats that don't sit well with them either.
A typical day
When I've cared for dogs in the past I always take time to greet the dog and show affection before preparing the both of us for a walk. For higher energy dogs this would more likely look like a trip to a dog park where the dog can run free in an open space. After a typical walk around a couple blocks I like to reward dogs with treats and playtime. At that point we should both be a little worn out. At this point I would take a break to sit with the dog, maybe brushing those with thick coats.

I’m a full time student so I have limited availability. I’m mostly free in the evenings and on lunch breaks to care for pets. My weekends are fully available.
