Pet care experience
Hi! My name is Valerie. I have been working professionally with animals for about 19 years. I started off working at my local county animal shelter, where I learned how to clean kennels, showcase dogs for adoption, counsel potential adopters, train dogs, and learned how to administer medications and vaccines, draw blood, and other miscellaneous veterinary tasks. Then, I went on to work for a doggie day care center where I learned how to manage groups of 20+ dogs at a time. From there, I transitioned into a small, private-owned animal boarding facility, where I further enhanced my pet care skills. Next, I worked for a really cool traveling mobile veterinary clinic educating clients about preventative care and preventative products/medications and restrained dogs, cats, and ferrets for vaccines, blood draws, and microchipping. Soon enough, I was asked to work at a no-kill animal shelter, as their Medical Coordinator where I performed veterinary technician duties, made sure all of the animals remained as healthy as possible, kept the animals up-to-date on their vaccines and preventatives, and treated animals for illness and worked directly with the animals in our quarantine room. Then, I was asked to apply at a small primary care animal hospital because they were impressed with my blood draw technique on my own dog that was too rambunctious and wiggly for them. Currently, I work full-time (Sun-Tues) as a lead veterinary pharmacy technician for one of the country's largest, independently-owned veterinary hospitals specializing in primary care, emergency, and various specialty departments, such as oncology, internal medicine, ophthalmology, behavior, and specialty surgeries. Throughout my animal career, I also did a lot of volunteer work with a local animal shelter, a dog/cat rescue, my own rescue, and a horse rescue. I am a fully insured and registered pet sitter. I am in the process of renewing my Pet CPR certification and Fear Free certification. I completed a dog training course through Penn Foster. I currently feel comfortable training basic obedience and working through some minor behavior issues. I believe in using science-based methods along with the use of rewards to reinforce good behavior to train dogs.
Reviews
Valerie came as a drop-in to help me work on desensitising my dog to strangers coming into our home and I really valued her help. She gave her own advice on how we could make my dog feel more comfortable and was very receptive to working with me on this which I really appreciated.
Valerie was awesome! She sent me updates about my cat and went above and beyond to make sure everything was clean when I returned. Thank you Valerie!!

I care for a client’s pet as if they were my own. I try to keep to their daily routine as close to normal as possible. I follow oral/written direction really well (I have clients who have written me a few pages worth of care instructions and I will never complain when someone gives me tons of details like that)! I make good judgement calls when needed (i.e. if I have a question and can’t get in touch with the owner I can make a safe, temporary decision until I hear back, for example if a pet is having a medical emergency vs something minor that can wait—however, the owner would always be notified immediately whether their pet is having an emergency or just a minor occurrence).
Information Valerie P. would like to know about your pet
It's important for me to know of any behavioral or medical conditions your pet may have prior to meeting/providing services. I am unable to accept human-aggressive pets (fear cases are fine). If your pet requires medication, I will need to know if they have/may bite, growl, hiss, or scratch (for these pets, we may need to discuss other possible options for them). I will need to know if you use a shock, prong, or choker collar on your dog before visits begin, as these are tools I do not work with. We will need to discuss disuse while I care for your dog. Please inform me of any reptiles (and other small pets) that are in your home whether they require care or not. Everything else can be discussed during the REQUIRED meet and greet, such as your pet’s likes/dislikes, vaccination records, emergency contacts, where food, treats, and other supplies are located, etc.
A typical day
Each animal is different, but some of the fun things I can do with dogs are going for walks were there are lots of things to smell, take trips to the pet store for a doggie treat or new toy, go to Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts for a Pup Cup, stop at a water ice/ice cream stand, (if friendly/calm) hang out with my dogs, go to dog-friendly parks and/or go for a mini-hike, play in the pool, play fetch in the backyard, play with doggie-puzzles, or play hide-and-seek with treats! For cats, I would brush them, play with them, pet them, and hang out with them.
